There has been increased interest in co-cultures of stem cells and chondrocytes for cartilage tissue engineering as there are the limitations associated with using either cell type alone. Drawbacks associated with the use of chondrocytes include the limited numbers of cells available for isolation from damaged or diseased joints, their dedifferentiation during in vitro expansion and a diminished capacity to synthesise cartilage-specific extracellular matrix components with age and disease.
