The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy and safety of transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with the Occlutech duct occluder (ODO) in children. We reviewed the clinical records of 71 patients who underwent percutaneous closure of PDA with an ODO between September 2014 and August 2016. The Occlutech duct occluder was applied to 71 patients during the study period (September 2014-August 2016), and the results were analyzed in this study. Forty-two of the patients were female and 29 male...

Located under the cerebral hemispheres and draining the anterior and central regions of the brain into the sinus of the posterior cerebral fossa, the vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation is considered to be a rare cause of hydrocephaly. The presence of this condition in the neonatal period typically includes intractable heart failure and a poor prognosis. We report a case of aneurysm of the vein of Galen diagnosed prenatally at 28 weeks of gestation, with the delivery at term by caesarean section of a female infant...

The objective was to compare luteal area (LA), luteal blood flow (LBF), and progesterone (P4) concentration before and after artificial insemination (AI) in pregnant and open cows in the diestrus preceding insemination and during the first 21 d after insemination. A number of 119 multiparous German Holstein cows were examined using B-mode and color Doppler sonography in diestrus (15-5 d before AI) and on days 7, 14, and 21 post insemination (pi). Blood samples for determination of P4 concentration were collected at each examination...

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) filling following atrial contraction generates LV myocardial stretch that propagates from base to apex with a speed proportional to myocardial elasticity. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that intrinsic velocity propagation of myocardial stretch (iVP) would be altered in patients with valvular disease and chronic LV pressure overload or volume overload, which may adversely affect mechanical properties of the LV tissue. A second aim was to compare iVP with flow propagation velocity in the chamber...

The case is reported of a successful transcatheter implantation of an Edwards SAPIEN 3 valve (29 mm) into a failing tricuspid bioprosthesis (Sorin Pericarbon, 31 mm). The procedure was performed in a 69-year-old woman with post-rheumatic mitral and tricuspid valve disease. Multiple previous cardiac surgeries precluded the use of another surgical approach. A large, organized, two-piece thrombus in the enlarged right atrium was not considered an absolute contraindication to the procedure. The SAPIEN 3 valve was implanted under general anesthesia, via a femoral venous access, under three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography guidance...

: European Society of Hypertension/European Society of Cardiology guidelines recommend calculation of estimated glomerular filtration rate and evaluation of urinary albumin excretion rate as routine tests in the initial evaluation and during the follow-up of all hypertensive patients. However, from a clinical point of view, renal ultrasound - a noninvasive, readily available and cheap imaging modality - could contribute to the better evaluation of a hypertensive patient by identifying common causes of secondary hypertension (HTN) originating from the kidney and more recently by detecting renal injury in severe or long-standing essential HTN by measuring renal resistive indexes...

Spontaneous rupture is a life-threatening complication of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Detecting active bleeding is critical. Color Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) with Levovist(®) are reported to be useful for detecting active bleeding. A few reports have described using Sonazoid(®) to detect bleeding in ruptured HCC. This report describes two distinctive patterns of bleeding from ruptured HCC observed in CEUS with Sonazoid(®). Four patients with suspected HCC rupture were examined by gray-scale ultrasonography (US) and then CEUS with Sonazoid(®)...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of color and bidirectional power Doppler ultrasound combined with Fetal Intelligent Navigation Echocardiography (FINE) in examining the fetal heart. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted of fetuses in the second and third trimesters with a normal heart or with congenital heart disease (CHD). One or more spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) volume datasets, combined with color or bidirectional power Doppler (S-flow) imaging, were acquired in the apical four-chamber view...

We propose a regularized least-squares method for reconstructing 2D velocity vector fields within the left ventricular cavity from single-view color Doppler echocardiographic images. Vector flow mapping is formulated as a quadratic optimization problem based on an [Formula: see text]-norm minimization of a cost function composed of a Doppler data-fidelity term and a regularizer. The latter contains three physically interpretable expressions related to 2D mass conservation, Dirichlet boundary conditions, and smoothness...

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease-associated mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) is common in pediatric kidney disease patients and a risk factor for future cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) and Klotho are novel key players in CKD-MBD, and has been suggested to be involved in the development of CVD. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 74 pediatric patients; 31 with CKD (age range 0.8-18.8 years, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) range 9-68 mL/min/1...

BACKGROUND: Doppler indices form an integral component of noninvasive evaluation of fetal well-being. There is paucity of information about normal obstetric Doppler indices, particularly from the Indian subcontinent. The aim of the study was to find the values of pulsatility index (PI), resistive index (RI) of umbilical artery (UA), and fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) and calculate cerebro-placental ratio (CP ratio) for 18-40 weeks of normal gestation so that a reference range of these Doppler values can be postulated...

BACKGROUND: It is presumed that echocardiographic laboratory accreditation leads to improved quality, but there are few data. We sought to compare the quality of echocardiographic examinations performed at accredited versus nonaccredited laboratories for the evaluation of valvular heart disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: We enrolled 335 consecutive valvular heart disease subjects who underwent echocardiography at our institution and an external accredited or nonaccredited institution within 6 months...

OBJECTIVE: There are several ways to identify donor artery patency and success of surgery after an anastomosis of the superficial temporal artery (STA) to the middle cerebral artery (MCA). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ratio of bilateral STA mean flow rate (MFR) using color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) after bypass surgery and to confirm the possibility of this value as a predictor of the extent of collateral flow. METHODS: Eleven consecutive patients who had undergone STA-MCA anastomosis were included...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional and aesthetic outcomes on donor and recipient sites and to determine the effects of technical factors including flap thickness and vessel diameters measured by ultrasonography as well as the size of the defect and postoperative volume reduction of the flaps measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: In patients who had undergone soft tissue reconstructive surgery between March 2013 and March 2016 using 55 anterolateral thigh flaps (ALTFs), 30 radial forearm flaps (RFFs), and 18 latissimus dorsi flaps (LDFs), color Doppler ultrasonography was performed to measure the thickness of the flap at the site of the perforator...

We describe the case of a 45-year-old woman with a clinical history of breast cancer presenting with anuric renal failure, metabolic acidosis and bilateral grade 2-3 hydronephrosis. Following insertion of bilateral ureteral stents, urinary output was 5000 ml in the subsequent 24 hours with frankly bloody urine, after which anuria recurred. A new ultrasound examination showed hydronephrotic kidneys with properly positioned stents, a distended bladder free of clots and a hypo-anechoic, well-demarcated mass enveloping the aorta...
