BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aims of this study were to establish antibiotic profile and the molecular epidemiology of Acinetobacter baumannii isolates, with considering the effectiveness of control infection measures across three hospitals in the Kurdistan, west part of Iran. METHODS: Fifty-four A. baumannii isolates were collected from patients and environmental specimens. Antibiotic susceptibility patterns (Antibio-type) were evaluated for 17 different antibiotics and MIC for imipenem was done...

The study was performed to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of a lipid-encapsulated Zinc oxide on growth parameters and intestinal mucosal morphology piglets born to Duroc-sired Landrace × Yorkshire dams. Twenty-four 30-day-old piglets weaned at 25 days of age were orally challenged with 5 × 10(8) colony forming units of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88 and fed one of the four diets for 7 days: (i) a nursery basal diet containing 100-ppm ZnO (referred to as BASAL), (ii) BASAL supplemented with 120-ppm apramycin (referred to as ANTIBIO), (iii) BASAL with 2,400-ppm ZnO (referred to as HIGH), and BASAL containing 100-ppm lipid-encapsulated ZnO (referred to as LE)...

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial resistance is growing because of treatment a broad spectrum antibio- tics. Gram-negative pathogens which producing carbapenemase are a one of major problem in many hospitals. Rapid detection those strains provide an early inhibition of infection and control the expansion of microorganisms. The aim of work was to characterize the frequency of appearance MBLs in specific groups of Gram-negative bacilli which are resistant or intermediate to at least one of carbapenems...

BACKGROUND: Open surgery is the standard option for the treatment of hydatid pulmonary cysts. Surgeons are able to replicate the principles of conventional surgery using minimally invasive techniques ,in particular thoracoscopy. However, there are few reports about this subject in children. To our knowledge, this is one of the biggest pediatric series ever reported in the literature. aim: the purpose of this study was to determine the best indications of the thoracospic surgery for the treatment of the pulmonary hydatid cysts in children...

Inflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndrome as well as in the process of atherosclerosis in general. At the moment of myocardial ischaemia, local and systemic inflammatory reaction is amplified; in ischaemic myocardium there is increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines, particularly interleukin-6, which mediates C reactive protein (CRP) production by hepatocytes. CRP activates the complement cascade and thereby contributes to the lysis and removal of damaged cardiomyocytes...

Infective endocarditis can be divided from practical point of view into native valve endocarditis and prosthetic valve endocarditis. With regard to aquired endocarditis, endocarditis in intravenous drug abusers can be separetly differentiated. Echocardiography and microbio-logical cultures are essential for dia-gnosis. Treatment consists of antibio-tic therapy and often surgical procedure is required. We present a case report of an intravenous drug abuser with a tricuspid valve endocarditis, successfully treated with antibio-tic therapy and a following surgical valve repair...

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer are highly susceptible to infections. There is a lack of evidencebased guidelines or protocols for their management in palliative and endoflife care. PURPOSE: To define an optimal dia-gnostic approach and therapeutic management of infections in patients with palliative and terminal cancer care. Along with thromboembolic disease and cancer progression, infections are the most frequent causes of death in oncology. Besides the impact on mortality, they are accompanied with a myriad of symptoms decreasing the quality of life...

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a common cause of death in children. Early detection of bloodstream pathogens is crucial for the appropriate antibiotic treatment. Blood cultures (BC) are the gold standard test used for detection. Recently, additional molecular detection methods of microbial DNA by multiplex PCR (SeptiFast, SF) have become available. AIM: Our retrospective study was aimed to compare results of BC to those of SF regarding results and therapeutic relevance...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of mycoplasma and chlamydia infections on tubal infertilityand to assess the antibiotic susceptibility and resistance of female urogenital, and consequently to guide clinical rational drug use. METHODS: 327 tubal infertility women as infertility group and 286 healthy pregnant women as control group were randomly selected, detected chlamydia trachomatis (CT), ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) and mycoplasma hominis (MH) in cervical secretions and drug resistance of UU and MH...

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is the leading cause of sepsis in adult critical care. We present a retrospective study of patients admitted to a polyvalent intensive care unit with CAP from 1st June 2004 - 31st December 2006. We analysed 76 patients with a mean age of 62.88 (18.75) years. Mean APACHE II score was 24.88 (9.75). Mean SAPS II was 51.18 (18.05), with a predicted mortality of 47.27%. Aetiology was identified in 42.1% of the patients. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most frequent aetiological agent, but the group of aetiological agents more frequently identified was Gram-negative enteric bacilli...

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) remains one of the most controversial subjects in paediatric urology. Much literature has been published on VUR, making the understanding of this anomaly and its treatments quite opaque. Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) should be helpful to clarify the various VUR approaches contained in the 6224 titles found on Medline using the keywords "vesicoureteral reflux" and "vesicoureteric reflux". These articles were critically reviewed and graded according to EBM scorings, with regard to their methodological designs...

BACKGROUND: Results of studies concerning prevention of cardiovascular disease by treatment with macrolide antibiotics targeting C. pneumoniae infection are still controversial. This study describes the results of different tests for infection with C. pneumoniae as well as the effect of treatment with roxithromycin in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in relation to their serostatus against C. pneumoniae. METHODS: We analysed blood of 160 patients who came from the ANTIBIOtic therapy after an AMI ( ANTIBIO-) study, a prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study to investigate the effect of roxithromycin 300 mg/OD for 6 weeks in patients with an AMI...
