Monitoring of ventricular premature beats (VPBs), being abundant in hemodialysis patients, can provide information on cardiovascular instability and electrolyte imbalance. In this paper, we describe a method for VPB detection which explores the signals acquired from the arterial and the venous pressure sensors, located in the extracorporeal blood circuit of a hemodialysis machine. Nedaplatin (NDP) is a second-generation platinum derivative that was developed in Japan. Nowadays, it is being widely used in the management of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, head and neck cancers, especially when cisplatin and carboplatin cannot be tolerated or show drug resistance. To the best of our knowledge, there are few reported cases of NDP-induced bradycardia in the relevant medical literature. We have analyzed symbol sequences of heart beat annotations obtained from 24-h electrocardiogram recordings of 184 post-infarction patients (from the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial database, CAST). In the symbol sequences, each heart beat was coded as an arrhythmic or as a normal beat. The symbol sequences were analyzed with a model-based approach which relies on two-parametric peaks over the threshold (POT) model, interpreting each premature ventricular contraction (PVC) as an extreme event.
