In the context of the White Book of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) in Europe, this paper deals with the history of the PRM medical specialty. The specialty evolved in different European countries, and sometimes also into the single countries, from different medical streams that finally joined. These included among others: balneology, gymnastic, use of physical agents (water, heat, cold, massage, joint manipulations, physical exercise, etc.). Another important role has been played by the increasing number of people experiencing or likely to experience disability due to improvement of medicine and consequent survivals from wars, accidents and/or big infective epidemics (like polio); these evolutions happened in strict relationship with other specialties like cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, pneumology, rheumatology, traumatology, creating a knowledge transversal to all of them...

The Peri-Caspian Lowland megabasin is a vast region of ancient salt accumulation that occurred during the Permian period. The territory over which the salt domes were formed gave rise to and accumulated huge resources of subterranean brackish and salted waters within the hypergenesis zone that also included brine and mineral mud lakes containing chemical elements of great therapeutic value. Nowadays, the subterranean waters (leaches, pools, and springs) provide the sources of the mineral-rich materials of balneological significance, such as sulfide, bromine, and boron-containing mineral waters the ion and mineral composition of which together with the high degree of mineralization makes them highly valuable for medicinal applications...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of outpatient balneological treatment consisting of hydrotherapy and peloid therapy in elderly patients with osteoarthritis. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study all patients aged ≥65 years with any type of osteoarthritis who received balneological treatment (hydrotherapy and peloid therapy) at our clinic between 2007 and 2016 were included. Hydrotherapy was applied as head-out immersion in a tap water pool at 36-38 °C for 20 min and then peloid therapy was applied as a local peloid pack on the painful region or joint at 42-43 °C for 20 min, on each weekday for 2 weeks...

The specific objectives of the study are to clarify the sources and characteristics of groundwater in the aquifers along the coast of the White Sea in northwestern Russia, and on this basis to perform a broad14 C and234 U/238 U dating of all their types, taking into account the mixing processes. Investigation of an evolution of the groundwater chemistry revealed that the main evolutionary trends are the following: (1) Mixing Late Pleistocene brackish water end member (brackish1) and Mikulino seawater end member with strongly brackish and salty water in the Vpd aquifer (salty Vpd) formation...

Organic-rich freshwater sediments formed from the remains of water plants, plankton and benthic organisms, which are transformed by microorganisms, and mixed with mineral components supplied from the lake basin, are known as gyttja (sapropel or dy). Gyttja is a valuable natural resource that can be used in various fields such as agriculture, forestry, construction, chemical industry, balneology and the latter ones are especially interested in chemical composition and safety of natural materials. The aim of the study was to investigate micro- and macro-element content of gyttja derived from lakes of eastern Latvia (north-east of Europe)...

This study aims to compare the effects of balneological treatments applied at consecutive and intermittent sessions without interfering with their daily routine in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This is a randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical trial. Fifty patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis were included. The patients were divided into two groups. All patients were given a total of ten sessions of balneological treatment consisting of hydrotherapy and mud pack therapy. Group 1 received consecutive treatment for 2 weeks, while group 2 received intermittent treatment for 5 weeks...

From ancient times, light has played a significant role in the treatment of diseases. The modern discoveries (eg, ultraviolet radiation) and modern inventions (eg, the electric generator or the electric lightbulb), as well as balneologic experiences of the treatment with sunlight, contributed to the transition from heliotherapy to artificial light phototherapy at the end of the 19th century. Nils Ryberg Finsen (1860-1904) was the founder of modern phototherapy. He is famous for applying an electric carbon arc torch in treating patients with lupus vulgaris using ultraviolet radiation...

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of death among people with obesity are cardiovascular complications as a result of a hypercoagulability state. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to assess the potential of coagulation system activation depending on the tissue factor and to analyze of the influence of a 3-week low-calorie diet and balneological treatment on selected coagulation parameters in morbidly obese patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 36 patients (28 females and 8 males; mean age 46) with the value of BMI > 40 kg/m2...

UNLABELLED: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most widespread diffuse liver pathologies among the patients over 40 years of age. The available algorithms for the pharmacological treatment of this disease do not always ensure the desirable results which makes their further development and improvement with the use of natural and preformed physical factors an important priority. AIM: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the internal course of mineral waters of different balneological types and a bischofite aqueous solution for the treatment of the patients presenting with NAFLD...

We studied the results of sanatorium treatment of 256 patients with complicated spinal injury and decubital ulcers. 74% of patients were male patients aged 38.5 ± 11.8 years. 89.4% of patients suffered from severe abnormalities, mild abnormalities were registered in 10.6% of patients. In 82.6% of patients decubital ulcers were localized to the skin only on one site, in 17.4% was registered multiple localization. Duration of the patients'follow-up varied from one to three years or more. Patients were divided into 2 clinical groups: the first group consisted of 132 patients who were applied during the preoperative preparation balneological factors and nanosilver, 124 patients included in the second group, which preoperative preparation was carried out in conventional-manner...

The aim of the study was to develop and test an optimal and cost-effective regional quality monitoring system in depleted transboundary low-temperature Neogene geothermal aquifers in the west Pannonian basin. Potential tracers for identification of seasonal and long-term quality changes of the Pleistocene thermal waters were investigated at four multiple-screened wells some 720 to 1570 m deep in Slovenia. These thermal waters are of great balneological value owing to their curative effects and were sampled monthly between February 2014 and January 2015...

The simple message of this paper is that it is the high time to reevaluate the strategies and optimize the efforts for investigation of thermal (spa) waters. Several articles trying to clear mode of action of medicinal waters have been published up to now. Almost all studies apply the unproven hypothesis, namely the inorganic ingredients are in close connection with healing effects of bathing. Change of paradigm would be highly necessary in this field taking into consideration the presence of several biologically active organic substances in these waters...
