In November 2015, an article by A. J. Lecloux was published in this journal (J Nanopart Res, 17:447, 2015). The article focused on the use of volume-specific surface area (VSSA) for the implementation of the European Commission's recommended definition of "nanomaterial". In that paper, VSSA values were calculated for polydisperse particulate materials using a particle number-based averaging method which do not agree with earlier results of VSSA simulations of polydisperse materials reported in 2014 by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission (EC)...

Lead sulfide nanoparticals (PbS NPs) is an important semiconductor material due to its unique physical and chemical properties, but its potential health hazard to reproductive system is not clear. In the current study, we systematically explored the reproductive toxicity of PbS NPs in rats by measuring the body weight and testicular coefficient, testing serum testosterone levels, and studying the sperm survival rate and sperm abnormality rate. Furthermore, in order to study the toxic mechanism we performed lead contents measurements in testis, and investigated the pathology in testis...

For some decades now, nanotechnology has been touted as the 'next big thing' with potential impact comparable to the steam, electricity or Internet revolutions - but has it lived up to these expectations? While advances in top-down nanolithography, now reaching 10-nm resolution, have resulted in devices that are rapidly approaching mass production, attempts to produce nanoscale devices using bottom-up approaches have met with only limited success. We have been inundated with nanoparticles of almost any shape, material and composition, but their societal impact has been far from revolutionary, with growing concerns over their toxicity...

In this paper, an efficient method for determination of total pyrene concentration in the biological samples including plasma, liver, spleen, lung and kidney of Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated and established using steady-state fluorescence method. Equilibrium dialysis method was applied to determine plasma protein binding rate of pyrene. The results illustrated that the protein binding rate depends on the concentration of pyrene in plasma. Extraction of pyrene in plasma was studied by using biomedical nanopartical which was prepared from synthesized associating polymer poly(ethylene glycol) end-capped by hexadecane...

Herein, a new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) strategy for enzyme-free microRNA-21 (miR-21) amplified detection was designed based on target-catalyzed hairpin assembly by combining the signal-amplification capability of both intramolecular and intermolecular ECL co-reaction. In this strategy, two hairpin DNA probes of H1 and H2 were designed as capture probes and detection probes, respectively. To be specific, the capture probes of H1 were immobilized on the multilayer interface of AuNPs and thiosemicarbazide (TSC) assembly on the single-walled carbon nanohorns decorated electrode, while the detection probes of H2 was anchored on the nanocarriers of gold nanoparticals functionalized reduced graphene oxide (Au-rGO) which were tagged with the self-enhanced ruthenium complex (PEI-Ru(ΙΙ)) in advance...

Surface-enhanced Raman detection of thiram is demonstrated by using Ag-nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on Au film over nanosphere (AuFON) substrate as the hybrid substrate. The SERS signal of the Ag NPs attached to solid supports is studied. The close coupling together of thousands of Ag NPs on AuFON leads to the generation of hot spots for SERS. The Ag NPs on AuFON can be applied to detect rhodamine-6G (R6G) with the detection limitation of 10-11 M and the pesticide thiram in acetone with a detection limit of as low as 0...

A novel electrochemical biosensing platform for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+))-dependent dehydrogenase catalysis was designed using the nitrogen-doped graphene (NG), which had properties similar to NADH dehydrogenase (CoI). NG mimicked flavin mononucleotide (FMN) in CoI and efficiently catalyzed NADH oxidation. NG also acted as an electron transport "bridge" from NADH to the electrode due to its excellent conductivity. In comparison with a bare gold electrode, an 800 mV decrease in the overpotential for NADH oxidation and CoI-like behavior were observed at NG-modified electrode, which is the largest decrease in overpotential for NADH oxidation reported to date...

Stem cells contribute to physiological processes such as postischemic neovascularization and vascular re-endothelialization, which help regenerate myocardial defects or repair vascular injury. However, therapeutic efficacy of stem cell transplantation is often limited by inefficient homing of systemically administered cells, which results in a low number of cells accumulating at sites of pathology. In this study, anti-CD34 antibody-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PEG-CD34) are shown to have high affinity to stem cells...

Accurate first-principle calculations on bimetallic cobalt-copper clusters of up to six atoms (Pérez et al 2012 J. Nanopart. Res. 14 933) revealed a close similarity of the ground-state magnetic properties to the ultimate jellium model, provided that a 2D to 3D geometric transition was invoked. We discuss this relationship in terms of partial occupancies of the valence electrons in both cases, with the jellium results described by nonperturbative spherical wavefunctions. Based upon this, we propose a scheme to predict magnetic properties of cobalt-copper clusters of up to twenty atoms using arguments of dimensionality and charge localization, and confirm some of these results with other independent density-functional calculations and experimental available data...

In this paper, a stable aqueous dispersion of graphene nanosheets (GNs) has been prepared by chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) with hydrazine hydrate in the presence of poly [(2-ethyldimethylammonioethyl methacrylate ethyl sulfate)-co-(1-vinylpyrrolidone)] (PQ11). Taking advantages of the fact that PQ11 is a positively charged polymer exhibiting reducing ability, we further demonstrated the subsequent decoration of GN with gold nanoparticals (AuNPs) by in-situ chemical reduction of HAuCl4. It was found that such nanocomposites exhibit good catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction and the GN supports also enhance the catalytic activity via a synergistic effect...

The damaging effect of "Poviargol", a substance containing silver nanoparts, was studied. It was shown that the damaging effect of "Poviargol" took place from the concentration of 2 mkg/ml and got its maximum at 10-12 microg/ml. Decrease of the incubation temperature from 30 to 4 degreesC led to amplification of the membrane-acting effect of "Poviargol"; however, inverse relation was observed in the range from 37 to 30 degreesC. The damaging effect of "Poviargol" increased when pH of the incubating medium was raised to 8...

Even though there is a high degree of scientific uncertainty about the risks of nanotechnology, many scholars have argued that policy-making cannot be placed on hold until risk assessments are complete (Faunce, Med J Aust 186(4):189-191, 2007; Kuzma, J Nanopart Res 9(1):165-182, 2007; O'Brien and Cummins, Hum Ecol Risk Assess 14(3):568-592, 2008; Powell et al., Environ Manag 42(3):426-443, 2008). Anatase-type TiO2 fine powders were synthesized under hydrothermal condition. The precursor was obtained via precipitation route using Ti(SO4)2. The characterization of the as-prepared sample was confirmed by TEM, XRD, UV-Vis and low temperature N2 adsorption measurements (BET). The photocatalytic activity was also investigated by the degradation of methyl orange solutions. The particles of the as-synthesized sample with narrow size distribution had an average diameter of about 24 nm. The specific BET surface area of the as-synthesized sample was about 56 m2 x g(-1), which is similar to the commercial TiO2 (P25)...
