BACKGROUND: Colorectal sessile serrated lesion (SSL) with synchronous neoplasm or large size are linked to higher risk of cancer, but their characteristics are unclear. METHODS: We prospectively included consecutive colorectal hyperplasic polyp and SSL collected at our institution from August 2011 to August 2012. The following data were collected and analyzed: age, gender, polyp site, aggregated polyp size, history of polyp, and synchronous neoplasm. RESULTS: We collected 437 specimens including 353 (80...

We evaluated the effectiveness of an additive comprising sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and sodium nitrite (SSL) as active ingredients for its ability to improve the aerobic stability of corn silages made in North America. In experiment 1, treatment with SSL (1.5 and 2.0 L/t) on whole-plant corn (WPC) was compared with treatment with an additive containing buffered propionic acid and citric acid (BPA; 2 L/t) on corn harvested at 32 and 38% dry matter and ensiled for 120 d. Silage treated with BPA was higher in ammonia-N and propionic acid relative to other treatments...

Genome shuffling was used to obtain Pachysolen tannophilus mutants with improved tolerance to inhibitors in hardwood spent sulfite liquor (HW SSL). Genome shuffled strains (GHW301, GHW302 and GHW303) grew at higher concentrations of HW SSL (80 % v/v) compared to the HW SSL UV mutant (70 % v/v) and the wild-type (WT) strain (50 % v/v). In defined media containing acetic acid (0.70-0.90 % w/v), GHW301, GHW302 and GHW303 exhibited a shorter lag compared to the acetic acid UV mutant, while the WT did not grow. Genome shuffled strains produced more ethanol than the WT at higher concentrations of HW SSL and an aspen hydrolysate...

Ligand-mediated targeting of anticancer therapeutic agents is a useful strategy for improving anti-tumor efficacy. It has been reported that co-administration of a tumor-penetrating peptide iRGD (CRGDK/RGPD/EC) enhances the efficacy of anticancer drugs. Here, we designed an experiment involving co-administration of iRGD-SSL-DOX with free iRGD to B16-F10 tumor bearing mice to examine the action of free iRGD. We also designed an experiment to investigate the location of iRGD-modified SSL when co-administered with free iRGD or free RGD to B16-F10 tumor bearing nude mice...

The incidence of skin cancer is higher than all other cancers and continues to increase, with an average annual cost over $8 billion in the United States. As a result, identifying molecular pathway alterations that occur with UV exposure to strategize more effective preventive and therapeutic approaches is essential. To that end, we evaluated phosphorylation of proteins within the PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathways by immunohistochemistry in sun-protected skin after acute doses of physiologically relevant solar-simulated ultraviolet light (SSL) in 24 volunteers...

Lysozyme has played an important role in animal feed additive industry, food additive industry and biological engineering. For improving expression efficiency of recombinant lysozyme from Sus scrofa, two genes respectively designed by the most used codon optimization strategies, "one amino acid one codon" and "codon randomization", were synthesized and expressed in Pichia pastoris X—33. At shaking flask level, Sus scrofa lysozyme (SSL) under two conditions had a highest activity of 153.33±10.41 and 538...

In our previous study, we observed a linear system consisted of sympathetic endings in the arrector pili muscles (AP muscles) along the rat skin termed sympathetic substance lines, or SSLs. After shaving the hair of the rats, the first wave of hair re-growth was not evenly distributed, but followed specific hair loop lines (HLLs). The patterns of HLL and SSL correspond with each other and also with the "Meridians" described in Chinese traditional medicine (CTM). Here I investigated in rabbits and rats whether the acupuncture signals are transmitted via the SSL/HLL, and whether the acupuncture analgesia (AA) is dependent on any peripheral mechanism...

Semisupervised learning (SSL) problem, which makes use of both a large amount of cheap unlabeled data and a few unlabeled data for training, in the last few years, has attracted amounts of attention in machine learning and data mining. Exploiting the manifold regularization (MR), Belkin et al. proposed a new semisupervised classification algorithm: Laplacian support vector machines (LapSVMs), and have shown the state-of-the-art performance in SSL field. To further improve the LapSVMs, we proposed a fast Laplacian SVM (FLapSVM) solver for classification...

Previous graph-based semisupervised learning (G-SSL) methods have the following drawbacks: 1) they usually predefine the graph structure and then use it to perform label prediction, which cannot guarantee an overall optimum and 2) they only focus on the label prediction or the graph structure construction but are not competent in handling new samples. To this end, a novel nonnegative sparse graph (NNSG) learning method was first proposed. Then, both the label prediction and projection learning were integrated into linear regression...

Hyperplastic polyps (HP) of the colon and rectum were previously considered benign. Newer studies have suggested that colorectal HP are different entities. The aim of this study was to reclassify lesions from a 5-year period previously classified as colorectal HP into traditional hyperplastic polyp (THP), sessile serrated lesions (SSL), and other lesions. All patients were confirmed in the Danish National Pathology Database for the occurrence of metachronous polyps/adenomas, colorectal cancer (CRC), and other gastrointestinal malignancies...

Graph Laplacian has been widely exploited in traditional graph-based semisupervised learning (SSL) algorithms to regulate the labels of examples that vary smoothly on the graph. Although it achieves a promising performance in both transductive and inductive learning, it is not effective for handling ambiguous examples (shown in Fig. 1). This paper introduces deformed graph Laplacian (DGL) and presents label prediction via DGL (LPDGL) for SSL. The local smoothness term used in LPDGL, which regularizes examples and their neighbors locally, is able to improve classification accuracy by properly dealing with ambiguous examples...

Modern network security rests on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. Distributed systems, mobile and desktop applications, embedded devices, and all of secure Web rely on SSL/TLS for protection against network attacks. This protection critically depends on whether SSL/TLS clients correctly validate X.509 certificates presented by servers during the SSL/TLS handshake protocol. We design, implement, and apply the first methodology for large-scale testing of certificate validation logic in SSL/TLS implementations...
