Despite limited supporting evidence, the practice of thickening breast milk or infant formula with commercially available thickening agents is prevalent. This study explored the viscosity-enhancing impact of carob bean gum (CBG) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) when added to infant formula at various concentrations and for different thickening durations. The findings indicate that thickening leads to an exponential increase in milk viscosity, from 25% of the recommended dosage onward. INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening condition that afflicts neonates. Breastfeeding has demonstrated to play a protective role against it. By administering lipopolysaccharides (LPS) orally in newborn rats (NBR), we have developed an experimental model to induce NEC-like gut damage. This is the unusual case of concurrent late-onset sepsis caused by enteroviruses in preterm quadruplets in a neonatal ward. While viral infections are an important differential diagnosis of bacterial sepsis in the outpatient setting, the occurrence in a neonatal ward with strict prophylactic hygiene measures is unusual. In this case, transmission of enteroviruses via breast milk appears possible.
