Only a minority of patients with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are offered a surgical option. This is mostly due to the fear of potential side effects, the variable success rate, and the extreme alteration of gastric anatomy with the current gold standard, the laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. It has been reported that laparoscopic Toupet fundoplication (LTF) and laparoscopic sphincter augmentation using a magnetic device (LINX) can treat reflux more physiologically and with a lower incidence of side-effects and reoperation rate...

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is one of the most common comorbidities in patients with asthma. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can be linked to difficult-to-control asthma. Current management includes gastric acid suppression therapy and surgical antireflux procedures. The LINX® procedure is a novel surgical treatment for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease refractory to medical therapy. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of successful treatment of refractory asthma secondary to gastroesophageal reflux disease using the LINX® procedure...

BACKGROUND: Different visual acuity chart can be targeted to evaluate the visual function of patients with different eye diseases. We conducted a comparative analysis of the digital logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (LogMAR) vision chart and the standard logarithmic vision chart for the measurement of visual acuity after retinal detachment surgery. METHODS: We used the digital LogMAR vision chart and the standard logarithmic vision chart to measure the visual acuity of 100 patients (100 eyes) who underwent retinal detachment surgery at our hospital using the LogMAR recording method and compared the differences between the mean measurements obtained by both methods for all patients and for different age groups...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify patients' characteristics that may predict failure and removal of the Linx sphincter augmentation device, and to report the results of 1-stage laparoscopic removal and fundoplication. BACKGROUND: The Linx device is a long-term magnetic implant that was developed as a less disruptive and more reproducible surgical option for patients with early-stage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Removal of the device has been shown to be feasible, but no long-term results of this procedure have been reported yet...

Predicting the dynamics of community composition and functional attributes responding to environmental changes is an essential goal in community ecology but remains a major challenge, particularly in microbial ecology. Here, by targeting a model system with low species richness, we explore the spatial distribution of taxonomic and functional structure of 40 acid mine drainage (AMD) microbial communities across Southeast China profiled by 16S ribosomal RNA pyrosequencing and a comprehensive microarray (GeoChip)...

The origin of the excellent piezoelectric properties at the morphotropic phase boundary is generally attributed to the existence of a monoclinic phase in various piezoelectric systems. However, there exist no experimental studies that reveal the role of the monoclinic phase in the piezoelectric behavior in phase-pure ceramics. In this work, a single monoclinic phase has been identified in Pb(Zr,Ti)O_{3} ceramics at room temperature by in situ high-energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and its response to electric field has been characterized for the first time...

Single-phase xNdFeO3-(1 - x)PbTiO3 thin films with different dopant contents were fabricated on the Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by a sol-gel route. Grain size was influenced by the dopant content effectively. A synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction study revealed a reduced tetragonality (c/a) of the PbTiO3 lattice in the films. Distortion of the TiO6 octahedron was weakened, as investigated by Raman scattering and X-ray absorption spectra. An electronic structural study indicated that the hybridizations between O 2p and Pb 6s and Ti 3d orbitals were weakened...

While older age associates with adverse percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) outcomes, detailed information relating age to stent strut coverage and neointimal characteristics is lacking. One hundred nineteen patients with 123 sirolimus-eluting stents (SESs) were divided into 3 groups: group A (≤55 years), group B (56-65 years), and group C (>65 years). At 6 and 12 months of follow-up, optical coherence tomography was performed to assess strut coverage and neointimal remodeling. At 6 months, the proportion of uncovered struts increased with age: 6...

TiO2/CdS porous hollow microspheres have been one-pot rapidly synthesized by a salt-assisted aerosol decomposition method, and exhibit an excellent photocatalytic activity of 996 μmol h(-1) (50 mg photocatalysts with loading Ru co-catalyst) for hydrogen evolution from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial reagents (SO3(2-) and S(2-)) under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). Its high photocatalytic performance is attributed to the surface morphology, crystallinity and heterostructures. The present facile method can be extended to fabricate other heterostructures consisting of oxides or sulfides...

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent disease which severely impacts the quality of life of the patients. The surgical options are limited to such patients who are not satisfied with medical therapies. Magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) is a new antireflux surgical technique for treating GERD, which could physiologically reinforce the lower esophageal sphincter by magnetic force. Many clinical and animal studies have focused on this new therapy. The purpose of this work was to review the feasibility, efficacy and safety of MSA as a new treatment for GERD...

Connections between metals and heterogeneous solid state materials form buried interfaces. These ubiquitous structures play an essential role in determining the performances of many nano- and microdevices. However, the information about the chemistry, structure, and properties of these real interfaces is intrinsically difficult to extract by traditional techniques. Therefore, approaches to efficiently discovering metalized interfaces are in high demand. Here, we demonstrate the transformation of nanoscale metal/oxide interface problems into surface problems through a novel metal-hydrogenation detaching method...

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has gained significant popularity in the USA, and consequently resulted in patients experiencing new-onset gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) following this bariatric procedure. Patients with GERD refractory to medical therapy present a more challenging situation limiting the surgical options to further treat the de novo GERD symptoms since the gastric fundus to perform a fundoplication is no longer an option. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to determine if the LINX® magnetic sphincter augmentation system is a safe and effective option for patients with new gastroesophageal reflux disease following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy...

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) with the LINX device (Torax Medical) has been reported in several short-and long-term studies, rivaling historic results of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF), but with fewer side effects. However, there have been no studies comparing patients with similar disease to validate these results. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 1-year outcomes of patients undergoing MSA and LNF from June 2010 to June 2013...

Hollow spheres of multicomponent (CuIn)(x)Zn(2(1-x))S2 solid solutions have been rapidly synthesized by a salt-assisted aerosol decomposition method. (CuIn)(0.2)Zn(1.6)S2 hollow spheres with a band gap of 2.53 eV exhibited an excellent and stable photocatalytic activity of 360 μmol h(-1) (50 mg photocatalysts) for hydrogen evolution from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial reagents (SO3(2-) and S(2-)) under visible light (λ≥ 420 nm) due to the well-crystallized microspheres and mesoporous structures...

BACKGROUND: The history of surgical antireflux treatment is coined by the search for better alternatives to Nissen fundoplication. Implantable devices are one option, beginning with the "Angelchik" prosthesis 30 years ago. However, this procedure was left soon because of the high rate of foreign body connected problems (migration, perforation). A modern approach is a magnetic sphincter augmentation device (LINX Reflux Management System, Torax Medical, Shoreview, MN, USA), a magnetic chain which is implanted laparoscopically...
