BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma is an important source of foodborne hospitalization with no safe and effective therapy against chronic or congenital Toxopalsmosis. Atovaquone is a drug of choice but not approved for use in congenital Toxoplasmosis. We hypothesized atovaquone to be safe and effective against feto-maternal Toxoplasmosis. MATERIAL/METHODS: Programmed pregnant mice were i.p. infected with 50-2400 Tachyzoites from Type II strain (clone PTG). Dams were treated daily with atovaquone or sham and monitored for pain, and complications...

BACKGROUND: Clinical manifestations of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) have not been clearly defined, and the role of HHV-6 in human disease remains to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of HHV-6 infections at Rennes Teaching Hospital and to describe all possible symptoms of such infections. STUDY DESIGN: We systematically analyzed in a retrospective study all the samples between May 2003 and December 2004 from patients with HHV-6 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)...

AIM: To determine the factors affecting the survival in colorectal cancer patients with synchronous liver metastases. METHOD: A total of 168 patients who had been treated colorectal cancer with synchronous liver metastases at Guangxi Medical University from January 2000 to December 2005 were identified. Criteria studied consisted of gender, age, time of symptoms, primary tumour location, primary tumour circumference, histological type, grade (tumour differentiation), T-status, N-status, large bowel obstruction, type of operation, primary tumour resection, ascities, location, number and diameter of liver lesions, preoperative CEA and chemotherapy...

AIM: To analyse a clinical course of hepatic cirrhosis of various etiology in potential recipients of donor liver; to formulate symptom complex which determines life span prognosis in patients with chronic diffuse diseases of the liver (CDDL). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 74 recipients of the liver (73 adults aged 15-58 years and 1 boy aged 13 years, mean age at liver transplantation 27.04 +/- 1.5 years, 41% males, 59% females). Orthotopic transplantation of the liver (OTL) was made from a live relative donor...

We report the case of a fiftyone-year-old woman with a past medical history of Linfoma no Hodking and a gastric adenocarcinoma with signet ring cells. She came to our institution with a twenty month history of dysnea secondary to pleural effussion, bilateral lower extremity edema and probably had ascitis. On CT and US two bilateral pelvic masses were found and biopsied. The anatomopathological analysis showed bilateral ovarian implants from signet ring cell adenocarcinoma (Krukenberg tumor). This patient developed a PseudoMeigs syndrome consisting on malignant ovarian tumor asociated with ascitis and pleural effusion without malignant cells...

Cytogenetic evaluation of bone marrow and neoplastic tissues plays a critical role in determining patient management and prognosis. Here, we highlight two cases in which the cytogenetic studies challenge the common practice of using hematologic and morphologic changes as key factors in malignant disease management. The first case is that of a lymph node sample from a 40-yr-old non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patient sent for determination of disease progress. Hematologic studies showed no evidence of transformation to high-grade NHL (>15% blasts with rare mitotic figures)...

This case report describes the evolution of a mycosis fungoides into a Sézary syndrome. The originality of the case consists in the appearance of ascitis with Sézary cells during the leukemic phase. It is the second report of a such case. Mycosis fungoides and its leukemic variant, the Sézary syndrome, are primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Their incidence is low. The treatments are topical in the early stages and systemic during the advanced stages. New immunomodulating treatments are in development. The existing therapeutic agents unfortunately do not improve the prognosis of the disease today...

Affinity chromatography using protein A from Staphylococcus aureus as the ligand has been widely used for the isolation of immunoglobulin G (IgG) from various species. Since ligand leakage from the affinity support can occur, time consuming analytical controls are required to detect the presence of contaminants associated with the isolated IgG prior to its use for therapeutic purpose in humans. Besides, protein A is an expensive bacterial product, whose isolation involves complex and labor intensive procedures...

Retrospective analysis of the results of treatment in 199 patients with cirrhosis of the liver and portal hypertension complicated by ascitis has been carried out. Embolisation of hepatic artery (EHA) by spiral was carried out in 130 patients. Control group consisted of 69 patients who underwent drug treatment. EHA resulted in 3% mortality rate. Ascitis regressed in 55% of patients soon after EHA, however in 12 months this effect persisted only in 27% of patients. Statistical analysis failed to show significant differences in survival after EHA and chemotherapy in patients with cirrhosis of the liver of classes A and C by Child-Pugh, and more favourable prognosis in conservative treatment in cirrhosis of class B...

Combination chemotherapy with 5-FU and CDDP was given to two patients with far advanced gastric cancer. One patient was associated with metastases of lung, liver, pancreas and Virchow and periaortic lymph nodes, and the other was associated with metastases of periaortic lymph nodes and malignant ascitis. The regimen consisted of 5-FU 1,000 mg/m2 (day 1-5, continuous infusion) and CDDP 100 mg/m2 (day 3, 1 hr drip infusion). The interval was from the 6th to the 21st day. The response to chemotherapy showed shrinking of primary gastric lesions and metastases of liver, pancreas and periaortic lymph nodes, and disappearance of Virchow lymph nodes and malignant ascitis...

Clinico-morphological features of 228 proliferating epithelial ovarian tumors of various histological patterns were studied. The group under study consisted of 135 serous (59.2%), 54 mucinous (23.7%) and 39 endometroid cystadenomas (17.1%). These tumors spread by implantation only. Metastases were registered in 20.2% of cases. Their incidence increased significantly in younger patients of reproductive age and in those with bilateral lesions, ascitis, cystic-solid and papillary types of tumor growth, mucinous tumors and invasive neoplasms...

Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) was isolated from tissues of aborted fetuses and weaned and suckling piglets from 4 different pig farms in Quebec. The farms were experiencing reproductive failure in sows of different parities concomitant to respiratory problems in suckling and postweaning piglets. At necropsy, gross lesions were confined to the lung and consisted of pulmonary congestion and edema of various degrees. Lesions of multifocal interstitial to proliferative pneumonia were found in the lungs of these piglets...

Omental and gastric lymphangioma : a general review of cases and two personal cases. Lesser omentum tumors are rare. They exceptionnally arise from the stomach. Pathologic fractures : there are three types of lymphangioma simplex, cavernous and combined cystic ones. Microscopic examination shows that cysts are lined with endothelium and the wall is infiltrated by lymphocytes. Lymphangioma frequently occur in childhood (stomacal tumors excepted). Symptoms are those observed either in abdominal tumors, or in ascitis or in acute abdominal disease...

A transplantable myelogenous leukemia of an inbred Wistar/Furth rat has been established in tissue culture and cloned. The resulting transplantable leukemia line demonstrates in vitro doubling time of 20 hr, colony-forming efficiency of 5% in liquid and methylcellulos-containing medium, and a saturation density of 3.0 x 106 cells/sq cm in liquid medium. Following intraperitoneal inoculation, newborn rats developed solid tumors, ascities, and leukemia with ld50 of5 x 103 cells and mean latency of 60 days. The tumor cell morphology was consistent with that of acute myelogenous leukemia...
