INTRODUCTION: several studies have pointed out the effectiveness of the PillCam colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) compared with the colonoscopy in the study of the colonic pathology. AIMS AND METHODS: the objective of our study was to assess the agreement in the diagnosis of CCE with conventional colonoscopy as well as its sensitivity and specificity, and to describe the findings of the CCE in our clinical practice. Consecutive patients with abdominal symptoms were included in the study...

PATIENTS AND METHODS: A study on 2000 OGD (oesophagogastroduodenoscopy) has been carried out on 95 patients with polypoid lesions. The endoscopic therapy has been used in the treatment of early stage neoplastic esophageal lesions with great success. The endoscopic ultrasound is a useful tool for the correct staging of these lesions. The staging accuracy of esophageal cancer with endoscopic ultrasound reaches 80% for T stage and 77% for N stage. The endoscopic approach provides complete resection of lesions confined to the mucosal layer, is a safety procedure with complications reported to occur from 3% to 13%. The morbidity and mortality rates after an endoscopic mucosal resection have been reported to be less than those posterior to esophagectomy...

CONTEXT: Colonoscopy with polypectomy reduces the incidence of colorectal cancer and its associated mortality. The ideal interval between surveillance examinations is determined by clinical features and endoscopic findings considered as risk factors to the development of advanced colonic neoplasias. OBJECTIVE: To determine the development rate of advanced neoplasia in patients submitted to surveillance colonoscopy in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Three hundred and ninety two patients who underwent two or more complete colonoscopies between 1995 and 2005, and who have at least one diagnosed colorectal adenoma entered into the study...

BACKGROUND/AIM: It is a general opinion that the biggest number of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) develops with the malignant alteration of colorectal adenomas (adenoma carcinoma sequence). Malignant potential of adenoma is in the function of its size, histological structure and the grade of dysplasia. An adequate analysis of colorectal adenomas helps their definition and timely removal, which significantly decreases carcinoma incidence. Mucin analysis can provide results which support the adenoma carcinoma sequence theory...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: good colonic preparation is essential to perform a complete and safe colonoscopy. The preparation used in the Endoscopy Unit was adopted after testing it against the classic 4-liter polyethylene glicol (PEG) preparation (Klean-Prep). Recently a new 3-liter PEG preparation was commercialised in Portugal, Endo-Falk, which appeared to be simpler and effective. The present study compared the preparation we usually use (a combination of 4 tablets of bisacodyl with 2-liter PEG and enemas) with this new preparation...

Likewise we see an increase in neoplastic lesions, sometimes diagnosed in advanced stage of disease, not susceptible to radical therapy. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the usefulness, reliability and security of colonoscopy in elderly patients, age 75 years or more. UNLABELLED: Antrochoanal polyp (ACP) or Killian polyp is a benign nonatopic lesion of the maxillary sinus. Patients usually present nasal obstruction. Many surgical options for the treatment of ACPs have been suggested to minimize postoperative recurrence. With development and improvement of the endoscope equipment, the paediatric endoscopy is developing from the diagnosis endoscopy to the interventional endoscopy. It is realized under general anaesthesia as a minimal invasive surgery and it is necessary to regularize the legal requirements. The main acts are realized in a current way in paediatrics endoscopy units: extraction of foreign body, dilation of oesophageal strictures, gastrostomy, polipectomy. Other indications are less frequent: injection sclerotherapy, haemostasis of upper GI bleeding or endoscopic achalasia treatment...

Brunner's gland hamartoma is a rare duodenal tumor generally localized in the duodenal bulb. Normally assymptomatic, it might cause upper gastrointestinal bleeding or intestinal obstruction. The diagnosis is based on upper gastrointestinal endoscopic or barium examination findings, and its treatment includes surgical or endoscopic resection, with an optimum prognosis. We present the case of a 59-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital with an upper gastrointestinal bleeding picture. Endoscopic examination showed an ulcerated polyp in duodenal bulb which was cut with polipectomy wire...

The aim of this study was to establish sensitivity and specificity of chromoendoscopy with ICD using conventional videoendoscopes and fiber-endoscopes with videocamera, to make a differential diagnosis of polyp histology and their possible role in colon cancer screening...
