REVIEW
Sarah Marvel, Eric Monnet
Hiatal hernias result from a widening of the esophageal hiatus that leads to the displacement of the lower esophageal sphincter and stomach into the thoracic cavity. Clinical signs of regurgitation, gastroesophageal reflux, and esophagitis are managed medically, but surgery is considered in those that fail to respond to medical management. Surgical treatment of hiatal hernia can be performed laparoscopically. Treatment involves plication of the esophageal hiatus, as well as a pexy of the esophagus to the diaphragm and a left sided gastropexy...

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) is an important strategy for preventing health-care-associated infections (HAIs). Few programs focus on HH for family members and primary caregivers but fewer for patients. This study aimed to estimate the frequency with which hospitalized pediatric patients have hand contact with hospital surfaces. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive observational study consisting of three phases: the first was the creation of an observation and data collection tool, the second was the training of the monitors, and the third was the observational study of hand contact and HH opportunities in hospitalized pediatric patients...

The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various cancers. However, the roles of the downstream GLI family (GLI1, GLI2, and GLI3) in tumorigenesis remain elusive. This study aimed to unravel the genetic alterations of GLI1/2/3 in cancer and their association with the immune microenvironment and related signaling pathways. Firstly, we evaluated the expression profiles of GLI1/2/3 in different cancer types, analyzed their prognostic and predictive values, and assessed their correlation with tumor-infiltrating immune cells...

A class of unique hydrazyl hydroxycoumarins (HHs) as novel structural scaffold was developed to combat dreadful bacterial infections. Some HHs could effectively suppress bacterial growth at low concentrations, especially, pyridyl HH 7 exhibited a good inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa 27,853 with a low MIC value of 0.5 μg/mL, which was 8-fold more active than norfloxacin. Furthermore, pyridyl HH 7 with low hemolytic activity and low cytotoxicity towards NCM460 cells showed much lower trend to induce the drug-resistant development than norfloxacin...

Current study investigated the impact of maternal and postnatal overnutrition on phenotype of adipose, in relation to offspring thermogenesis and sex. Female C57BL/6 J mice were fed with CHOW or high fat diet (HFD) for 2 weeks before mating, throughout gestation and lactation. At weaning, pups were fed to 9 weeks old with CHOW or HFD, which resulted in four groups for each gender--male or female: CHOW-CHOW (CC), CHOW-HFD (CH), HFD-CHOW (HC), HFD-HFD (HH). Maternal and post-weaning HFD enhanced thermogenic factors such as Acox1, Dio2 and Cox8b in iBAT of male and female offspring, but increased SIRT1, PGC-1α and UCP1 only in female...

Methodological advancements in road safety research reveal an increasing inclination toward integrating spatial approaches in hot spot identification, spatial pattern analysis, and developing spatially lagged models. Previous studies on hot spot identification and spatial pattern analysis have overlooked crash severities and the spatial autocorrelation of crashes by severity, missing valuable insights into crash patterns and underlying factors. This study investigates the spatial autocorrelation of crash severity by taking two capital cities, Addis Ababa and Berlin, as a case study and compares patterns in low and high-income countries...

Accurately detecting distant evolutionary relationships between proteins remains an ongoing challenge in bioinformatics. Search methods based on primary sequence struggle to accurately detect homology between sequences with less than 20% amino acid identity. Profile- and structure-based strategies extend sensitive search capabilities into this twilight zone of sequence similarity but require slow pre-processing steps. Recently, whole-protein and positional embeddings from deep neural networks have shown promise for providing sensitive sequence comparison and annotation at long evolutionary distances...

All mammalian eggs are surrounded by a relatively thick extracellular matrix (ECM) or zona pellucida (ZP) to which free-swimming sperm bind in a species-restricted manner during fertilization. The ZP consists of either three (e.g., Mus musculus ) or four (e.g., Homo sapiens ) glycosylated proteins, called ZP1-4. These proteins are unlike those found in somatic cell ECM, are encoded by single-copy genes on different chromosomes, and are well conserved among different mammals. Mammalian ZP proteins are synthesized as polypeptide precursors by growing oocytes that will become ovulated, unfertilized eggs...

While several treatment choices exist for cervical cancer, such as surgical therapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, some patients will still show poor prognosis. HPV infection is a principal factor for cervical cancer development, from early inflammation to proliferation, angiogenesis, and neoplastic growth. While HPV T-cell responses exist, the tumor seems to evade the immune system upon its tolerance. The latter suggests the existence of a confluent tumor microenvironment responsible for the evasion tactics employed by the neoplasm...

Peptide-based nanomaterials can serve as promising drug delivery agents, facilitating the release of active pharmaceutical ingredients while reducing the risk of adverse reactions. We previously demonstrated that Cyclo-Histidine-Histidine (Cyclo-HH), co-assembled with cancer drug Epirubicin, zinc, and nitrate ions, can constitute an attractive drug delivery system, combining drug self-encapsulation, enhanced fluorescence, and the ability to transport the drug into cells. Here, we investigated both computationally and experimentally whether Cyclo-HH could co-assemble, in the presence of zinc and nitrate ions, with other cancer drugs with different physicochemical properties...

Glypicans (Glps) are a family of heparan sulphate proteoglycans that are attached to the outer plasma membrane leaflet of the producing cell by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor. Glps are involved in the regulation of many signalling pathways, including those that regulate the activities of Wnts, Hedgehog (Hh), Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGFs), and Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs), among others. In the Hh-signalling pathway, Glps have been shown to be essential for ligand transport and the formation of Hh gradients over long distances, for the maintenance of Hh levels in the extracellular matrix, and for unimpaired ligand reception in distant recipient cells...
