INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Melanoma represents only 1% of all skin cancers. Acral lentigious melanoma (ALM) which usually arises from feet, is the rarest main subtype of melanoma. Subungual melanoma (SUM) is a rare variant of ALM. Amelanotic melanoma (AM) is found only in 4-27.5% of melanomas, and the mean age for patients affected by AM exceeds 50 years. Late diagnosing leads to unfavourable prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a case of subungual amelanotic melanoma that affected the nail unit of the right thumb which is a rare case, especially when the patient is only 39 years old...

BACKGROUND: Indocyanine green (ICG) is a fluorescent dye with increasing use for adult sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). The utility of ICG in pediatric oncology remains understudied. We aim to describe our experience using ICG for SLNB in pediatrics versus standard blue dye. METHODS: A retrospective review of pediatric patients with melanoma or sarcoma who underwent SLNB with technetium plus ICG or blue dye from 2014 to 2023 at a large academic children's hospital was conducted...

Metastatic melanoma, a highly lethal form of skin cancer, presents significant clinical challenges due to limited therapeutic options and high metastatic capacity. Recent studies have demonstrated that cancer dissemination can occur earlier, before the diagnosis of the primary tumor. The progress in understanding the kinetics of cancer dissemination is limited by the lack of animal models that accurately mimic disease progression. We have established a xenograft model of human melanoma that spontaneously metastasizes to lymph nodes and lungs...

PURPOSE: Complete lymph node dissection is the recommended treatment for clinically detectable lymph nodes in stage III melanoma. This surgery is associated with substantial morbidity. We hypothesize that combining percutaneous imaging-guided cryoablation of locoregional lymph nodes metastases with neoadjuvant in situ and systemic immunotherapy could allow disease control and evaluate the feasibility of this combination in this proof-of-concept study. METHODS: We enrolled 15 patients with stage IIIB/IIIC melanoma...

Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibody-positive dermatomyositis (DM)-associated interstitial lung disease (ILD) can sometimes be complicated by pneumomediastinum, although tension pneumomediastinum is extremely rare. We herein report a case of anti-MDA5 antibody-positive DM-ILD that worsened subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema during treatment. Hypotension and worsening respiratory failure were observed on day 20 of treatment. Mediastinal drainage under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery promptly improved the patient's circulatory and respiratory status...

Melanoma is a relatively rare malignancy with a highly aggressive biological behavior. Metastases to other sites, like lymph nodes and liver are common, but primary hepatic melanoma is a rarity with poor survival ranging from months to few years. Diagnosis of primary hepatic melanoma via clinical features and imaging technology is difficult because of its ambiguous features. Here, we present a 26-year-old North Indian woman admitted in the department of gastrointestinal surgery at our tertiary care hospital with the complaint of pain in the abdomen for a month associated with the loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss...

Primary intracranial meningeal melanomas are rare. Diagnosing primary meningeal melanomas mostly involves comprehensive assessment through clinical and radiological means. This evaluation should encompass a detailed dermal and ophthalmic examination. Any suspicious lesion must be biopsied and examined microscopically. This is crucial not only to differentiate primary intracranial melanoma from other brain tumors but also to rule out metastases from potential sources of primary cutaneous or non-cutaneous melanomas...

Introduction: Lentigo maligna (LM) and lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM) predominantly affect the head and neck areas in elderly patients, presenting as challenging ill-defined pigmented lesions with indistinct borders. Surgical margin determination for complete removal remains intricate due to these characteristics. Morphological examination of surgical margins is the key form of determining successful treatment in LM/LMM and underpin the greater margin control provided through the Slow Mohs micrographic surgery (SMMS) approach...

INTRODUCTION: Treatment for melanoma after a positive sentinel lymph node biopsy includes nodal observation or lymphadenectomy. Important considerations for management, however, involve balancing the risk of recurrence and the risk of lymphedema after lymphadenectomy. METHODS: From the Merative MarketScan Research Databases, adult patients were queried from 2007 to 2021. International Classification of Disease, Ninth (ICD-9) and Tenth (ICD-10) Editions, diagnosis codes and Current Procedural Terminology codes were used to identify patients with melanoma diagnoses who underwent an index melanoma excision with a positive sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB)...

BACKGROUND: Early detection and standardized treatment are crucial for enhancing outcomes for patients with cutaneous melanoma, the commonly diagnosed skin cancer. Whereas Medicaid expansion (ME) has had a positive impact on some cancers, its specific influence on cutaneous melanoma remains understudied. Melanoma is an aggressive malignancy accounting for approximately 1% of all skin cancers. The standard of care for distant melanoma of the skin is immunotherapy with PD-1 inhibitors (nivolumab) or CTLA-4 inhibitors. In March 2022, the FDA approved the combination of nivolumab with relatlimab, a lymphocyte-activation gene 3 antibody. There are few reports on the efficacy of treating widespread multivisceral metastatic melanoma with nivolumab plus relatlimab with a complete clinical response. We describe the diagnosis and management of a patient with metastatic nodular melanoma treated with palliative resection of the primary tumor followed by immunotherapy with nivolumab and relatlimab...

Mucosal melanoma represents an uncommon melanoma subtype. Wide excision has long represented the standard therapeutic approach. Unfortunately, there is a high relapse rate and mortality. Neoadjuvant therapy with ipilimumab plus nivolumab has shown significant activity in cutaneous melanoma. We present two cases of mucosal melanoma, each with potential regional dissemination, who were treated with neoadjuvant immunotherapy with minimal toxicity. Both patients were closely monitored and achieved radiologic and pathologic complete responses...

Melanoma surveillance guidelines vary. Melanoma recurrence patterns and detection methods were examined. Resected melanoma patients were reviewed. Recurrence detection included patient complaint (PC), physical exam (PE), cross-sectional imaging (CSI), and ultrasound (US). 276 patients were included: 131 stage I, 83 stage II, and 62 stage III. Recurrence rates were 8%, 24%, and 27%, respectively. For stage I patients, 46% of recurrences were local, 18% regional, and 36% distant. Patient complaint identified 55% of recurrences, PE 36%, and CSI 9%...

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Despite the low mortality rate, rising incidence and recurrence rates are a burden on healthcare systems. Standard treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are either invasive or toxic to healthy tissues; therefore, new, alternative, selective treatments are needed. In this work, a combined photothermal and chemotherapeutic approach is proposed. MoS2 was used as photothermal agent. It was prepared by a liquid-phase exfoliation and intercalation method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), followed by recirculation through a custom-built high-power ultrasonication probe...
