For parents of children with disabilities, stigmatization is part of everyday life. To resist the negative social and emotional consequences of stigma, parents both challenge and deflect social devaluations. Challenges work to upend the stigmatizing structure, while deflections maintain the interaction order. We examine how parents of children with disabilities deploy deflections and challenges, and how their stigma resistance strategies combine with available models of disability discourse. Disability discourse falls into two broad categories: medical and social...

Heartburn is the most specific symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In clinical practice, heartburn relief by a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) trial does suffice to confirm GERD. However, an objective diagnosis of GERD is required before anti-reflux endoscopic or surgical interventions, independently from PPI response. Thus, since normal findings at upper endoscopy are detected in the majority of patients with heartburn, reflux monitoring is often required. When traditional catheter-based or wireless pH tests are used, reflux episodes are conventionally identified by pH drops below 4...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is described as a neurodegenerative disorder. However, neuroinflammation and chemokine expression are prominent pathological finding at sites of injury. Adipsin and adiponectin are molecules that are implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative and neuroimmune disorders. Adipsin and adiponectin concentrations were determined in the CSF of ALS patients and controls and the relationship of these chemokines with clinical severity and disease duration in ALS was determined...

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibro-inflammatory disease. This disease may be associated with elevated serum and tissue IgG4 levels. Early treatment prevents fibrosis and organ damage. We retrospectively studied the clinicopathologic correlation and outcome of treatment in IgG4-RD. This single-center retrospective study was done using electronic records of patients subjected to assay of serum IgG4 levels in our laboratory by nephelometry. There were 473 patients with suspected IgG4-RD. Of them, 41 patients fulfilled comprehensive diagnostic criteria for IgG4-RD and 432 had diseases other than IgG4-RD...

The relevance of right atrial pressure (RAP) as the back-pressure for venous return (QVR) and mean systemic filling pressure (MSFP) as up-stream pressure is controversial during dynamic changes of circulation. To examine the immediate response of QVR (sum of caval vein flows) to changes in RAP and pump function we used a closed chest, central cannulation, heart bypass porcine preparation (n=10) with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). MSFP was determined by clamping ECMO tubing with open or closed arterio-venous shunt at Euvolemia, Volume Expansion (9...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There are few effective therapies to achieve functional recovery from motor-related disabilities affecting the upper limb after stroke. This feasibility study tested whether a powered exoskeleton driven by a brain-computer interface (BCI), using neural activity from the unaffected cortical hemisphere, could affect motor recovery in chronic hemiparetic stroke survivors. This novel system was designed and configured for a home-based setting to test the feasibility of BCI-driven neurorehabilitation in outpatient environments...

Increased sympathetic nerve activity and the activation of the central renin-angiotensin system are commonly associated with cardiovascular disease states such as hypertension and heart failure, yet the precise mechanisms contributing to the long-term maintenance of this sympatho-excitation are incompletely understood. Due to the established physiological role of neurotrophins contributing toward neuroplasticity and neuronal excitability along with recent evidence linking the renin-angiotensin system and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) along with its receptor (TrkB), it is likely the two systems interact to promote sympatho-excitation during cardiovascular disease...

INTRODUCTION: Microvascular decompression (MVD) is accepted as the only aetiological surgical treatment for refractory classic trigeminal neuralgia (TN). There is therefore increasing interest in establishing the diagnostic and prognostic value of identifying neurovascular compressions (NVC) using preoperative high-resolution three-dimensional magnetic resonance (MRI) in patients with classic TN who are candidates for surgery. METHODS: This observational study includes a series of 74 consecutive patients with classic TN treated with MVD...
