BACKGROUND: Our earlier work has shown that a unique stem cell-based vaccine that comprises of murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and murine fibroblasts expressing the immunostimulant granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) successfully protects mice from the outgrowth of an implantable form of murine lung cancer. The use of live ESCs raises the potential risks of inducing teratomas and autoimmunity. We have attempted to improve the safety and utility of this prophylactic vaccine by employing exosomes derived from murine ESCs engineered to produce GM-CSF (ES-exo/GM-CSF vaccine)...

BACKGROUND: Whooping cough has had an increased incidence and severity specially in infants and maternal immunization has been implemented as a prevention strategy. COVID-19 pandemic seems to decrease the incidence of other respiratory diseases. METHODS: Retrospective study from 2012 to 2021 to assess the influence of pertussis maternal immunizations and the first year of COVID-19 pandemic in the cases of whooping cough. RESULTS: 960 suspected cases from primary care and hospital, with 130 cases (104 children and 26 adults) being diagnosed of whooping cough...

As a result of the continuing threat of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE), a study was made to determine if revaccination against VEE (TC-83 vaccine) was feasible and if revaccination could be incorporated into other routine vaccination practices. Of the horses given annual vaccination with bivalent western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) vaccine, 57% retained detectable serum-neutralizing (SN) antiboyd titers for VEE 18 months after the initial VEE vaccination was given...

A number of newly-developed vaccines are available nowadays, whilst others, which are well-established, have been improved. The collection of epidemiological data, however, is equally important in assessing and providing insight into prophylactic measures. The beneficial effects and risks of vaccination may be calculated by special formulae. Changes in the effect of vaccines can be detected by constant reevaluation of the epidemiological situation by means of these formulae. Another possibility lies in the calculation of the borderline number of complications of a certain disease when the risks of the sequelae of the disease or of the vaccination are about equal...
