The canine heartworm Dirofilaria immitis releases excretory/secretory molecules into its host and in culture. We report analyses of the types, amounts and stage-dependence of microRNAs and proteins found in D. immitis culture media recovered after incubating 800,000 microfilariae for 6days, 500L3 and 500L4 for 7days, as well as 40 adult females and 40 adult males for 48h, all separately. In addition, the presence of exosome-like particles was established by nanoparticle tracking analysis. Our results are in concordance with the D...

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between running exposure and the risk of hamstring strain injury (HSI) in elite Australian footballers. METHODS: Elite Australian footballers (n=220) from 5 different teams participated. Global positioning system (GPS) data were provided for every athlete for each training session and match for the entire 2015 season. The occurrences of HSIs throughout the study period were reported. Receiver operator characteristic curve analyses were performed and the relative risk (RR) of subsequent HSI was calculated for absolute and relative running exposure variables related to distance covered above 10 and 24 km/hour in the preceding week/s...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a novel algorithm that circumferentially co-registers serial virtual histology-intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) data for the focal assessment of coronary atherosclerosis progression. Thirty-three patients with an abnormal non-invasive cardiac stress test or stable angina underwent baseline and follow-up (6 or 12 months) invasive evaluation that included acquisition of VH-IVUS image data. Baseline and follow-up image pairs (n = 4194) were automatically co-registered in the circumferential direction via a multi-variate cross-correlation algorithm...

A growing number of studies have used a combination of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the assessment of atherosclerotic plaques. Given their respective strengths these imaging modalities highly complement each other. Correlations of hemodynamics and coronary artery disease (CAD) have been extensively investigated with both modalities separately, though not concurrently due to challenges in image registration. Manual co-registration of these modalities is a time expensive task subject to human error, and the development of an automatic method has not been previously addressed...

We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics...

The study is aimed at developing a near-infrared (NIR) method for predicting solid fraction (SF) of dry granulated ribbons manufactured with formulation variability. The study investigated the impact of unmodeled chemical variability and regression approaches on method performance. The study utilized an excipient-only formulation system. Calibration compacts were created with chemical and processing variability; followed by collection of NIR spectra. Partial least squares (PLS) and spectral slope algorithms were utilized to model compact SF...

Digital technology is regarded as increasingly important in the provision of safe, consistent and optimal health care in the future. However considerable challenges exist in relation to how it can best be used and integrated to support, transform and facilitate user engagement and provide individualised care. Many forms of digital health technology exist already that have improved diagnosis and treatment in terms of early diagnosis and treatment. That said, healthcare, and nursing in particular, remains largely at the periphery of the digital technology transformation and as a result is failing to capitalise on its potential for improving health care and services...

AIMS: This paper critically reviews the use of mixed method research in nursing with a particular focus on the extent to which current practice informs nurse researchers. It also aims to highlight gaps in current knowledge, understanding and reporting of this type of research. BACKGROUND: Mixed method research is becoming increasingly popular among nurses and healthcare professionals. Emergent findings from this type of research are very useful for nurses in practice...

PURPOSE: In dual-isotope (Tc-99m/In-111) small-animal single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), quantitative accuracy of Tc-99m activity measurements is degraded due to the detection of Compton-scattered photons in the Tc-99m photopeak window, which originate from the In-111 emissions (cross talk) and from the Tc-99m emission (self-scatter). The standard triple-energy window (TEW) estimates the total scatter (self-scatter and cross talk) using one scatter window on either side of the Tc-99m photopeak window, but the estimate is biased due to the presence of unscattered photons in the scatter windows...

BACKGROUND: Despite intensive efforts directed at initial training in fetal heart rate interpretation, continuing medical education, board certification/recertification, team training and the development of specific protocols for the management of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, the goals of consistently preventing hypoxia-induced fetal metabolic acidemia and neurologic injury remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: To validate a recently published algorithm for the management of category II fetal heart rate tracings , examine reasons for the birth of infants with significant metabolic acidemia despite the use of electronic fetal heart rate monitoring and critically examine the limits of EFHRM in the prevention of neonatal metabolic acidemia...

DnaB helicases are bacterial, ATP-driven enzymes that unwind double-stranded DNA during DNA replication. Herein, we study the sequential binding of the "non-hydrolysable" ATP analogue AMP-PNP and of single-stranded (ss) DNA to the dodecameric DnaB helicase from Helicobacter pylori using solid-state NMR. Phosphorus cross-polarization experiments monitor the binding of AMP-PNP and DNA to the helicase. (13) C chemical-shift perturbations (CSPs) are used to detect conformational changes in the protein upon binding...

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a significant age-related medical condition with limited pharmacologic options. Severe PAD, termed critical limb ischemia, can lead to amputation. Skeletal muscle is the end organ most affected by PAD, leading to ischemic myopathy and debility of the patient. Currently, there are not any therapeutics to treat ischemic myopathy, and proposed biologic agents have not been optimized owing to a lack of preclinical models of PAD. Because a large animal model of ischemic myopathy may be useful in defining the optimal dosing and delivery regimens, the objective was to create and to characterize a swine model of ischemic myopathy that mimics patients with severe PAD...

There is considerable interest in deploying stereotactic body radiotherapy in combination with immune therapy for patients with extracranial oligometastases. In addition to angiogenesis inhibition, sunitinib appears to mediate antitumor immunity through effects on circulating monocytic cells. The current study investigated the effects of combined sunitinib and stereotactic radiotherapy on hematopoiesis. As part of a phase I/II clinical trial utilizing concurrent sunitinib (25-50 mg on days 1-28) and image-guided radiation therapy (40-50 Gy in 10 fractions starting on days 8-19) for patients with metastatic cancer, the complete blood count, platelet count and automatic differential were performed pretreatment and on days 8 and 19...

Detection of bacterial urease activity has been utilized successfully to diagnose Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). While Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) also possesses an active urease, it is unknown whether detection of mycobacterial urease activity by oral urease breath test (UBT) can be exploited as a rapid point of care biomarker for tuberculosis (TB) in humans. We enrolled 34 individuals newly diagnosed with pulmonary TB and 46 healthy subjects in Bamako, Mali and performed oral UBT, mycobacterial sputum culture and H...

PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed to determine the association between running and the development of knee OA...
