We present the first measurement of charge-dependent directed flow in Cu+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV. The results are presented as a function of the particle transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for different centralities. A finite difference between the directed flow of positive and negative charged particles is observed that qualitatively agrees with the expectations from the effects of the initial strong electric field between two colliding ions with different nuclear charges. The measured difference in directed flow is much smaller than that obtained from the parton-hadron-string-dynamics model, which suggests that most of the electric charges, i...

PURPOSE: To set a baseline measurement of the number of hand flexion-extension cycles and analyse the degree of motion in young healthy individuals, measured by leap motion controller (LMC), besides describing gender and dominant hand differences. METHODS: Fifty healthy participants were asked to fully grip-and-release their dominant hand as rapidly as possible for a maximum of 3 min or until subjects fatigued, while wearing a non-metal wrist splint. Participants also performed a 15-s grip-and-release test...

PURPOSE: To assess the reliability and validity of a hand motion sensor, Leap Motion Controller (LMC), in the 15-s hand grip-and-release test, as compared against human inspection of an external digital camera recording. METHODS: Fifty healthy participants were asked to fully grip-and-release their dominant hand as rapidly as possible for two trials with a 10-min rest in-between, while wearing a non-metal wrist splint. Each test lasted for 15 s, and a digital camera was used to film the anterolateral side of the hand on the first test...

A generalized screening approach, applying isothermal calorimetry at 37 °C 100% RH, to formulations of spray dried dispersions (SDDs) for two active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) (BMS-903452 and BMS-986034) is demonstrated. APIs 452 and 034, with similar chemotypes, were synthesized and promoted during development for oral dosing. Both APIs were formulated as SDDs for animal exposure studies using the polymer hydroxypropylmethlycellulose acetyl succinate M grade (HPMCAS-M). 452 formulated at 30% (wt/wt %) was an extremely robust SDD that was able to withstand 40 °C 75% RH open storage conditions for 6 months with no physical evidence of crystallization or loss of dissolution performance...

New methods to manipulate gene and cell state can be used to engineer cell functionality, simplify quality assessment, and enhance manufacturability. These strategies could help overcome unresolved cell therapy manufacturing challenges and complement frameworks to design quality into these complex cellular systems, ultimately increasing patient access to living therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation progression and return-to-play (RTP) decision making following hamstring strain injury (HSI) can be challenging for clinicians, owing to the competing demands of reducing both convalescence and the risk of re-injury. Despite an increased focus on the RTP process following HSI, little attention has been paid to rehabilitation progression and RTP criteria, and subsequent time taken to RTP and re-injury rates. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review is to identify rehabilitation progression and RTP criteria implemented following HSI and examine the subsequent time taken to RTP and rates of re-injury...

INTRODUCTION: Patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) generally have a limited medical history and a normal body mass index, raising the possibility of a premorbid ALS phenotype. METHODS: The prevalence of cardiometabolic factors was analyzed in 58 ALS patients via comprehensive cardiovascular assessments and compared to Australian population norms. RESULTS: ALS patients had good cardiac fitness and no reported cardiovascular events...

Spirituality is an important aspect of humanity. Concerned with deriving meaning from events, and connection with others, it provides a mechanism for some to cope with illness and disability. While spiritual support is recognised as important, little is known about the spiritual needs of those people experiencing dementia. This meta-synthesis considers the experiences of spirituality from the perspective of people living with a diagnosis of dementia. Using a review protocol, key words from a preliminary scoping review were used to direct database searches in November 2013...

The canine heartworm Dirofilaria immitis releases excretory/secretory molecules into its host and in culture. We report analyses of the types, amounts and stage-dependence of microRNAs and proteins found in D. immitis culture media recovered after incubating 800,000 microfilariae for 6days, 500L3 and 500L4 for 7days, as well as 40 adult females and 40 adult males for 48h, all separately. In addition, the presence of exosome-like particles was established by nanoparticle tracking analysis. Our results are in concordance with the D...

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between running exposure and the risk of hamstring strain injury (HSI) in elite Australian footballers. METHODS: Elite Australian footballers (n=220) from 5 different teams participated. Global positioning system (GPS) data were provided for every athlete for each training session and match for the entire 2015 season. The occurrences of HSIs throughout the study period were reported. Receiver operator characteristic curve analyses were performed and the relative risk (RR) of subsequent HSI was calculated for absolute and relative running exposure variables related to distance covered above 10 and 24 km/hour in the preceding week/s...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a novel algorithm that circumferentially co-registers serial virtual histology-intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) data for the focal assessment of coronary atherosclerosis progression. Thirty-three patients with an abnormal non-invasive cardiac stress test or stable angina underwent baseline and follow-up (6 or 12 months) invasive evaluation that included acquisition of VH-IVUS image data. Baseline and follow-up image pairs (n = 4194) were automatically co-registered in the circumferential direction via a multi-variate cross-correlation algorithm...

A growing number of studies have used a combination of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the assessment of atherosclerotic plaques. Given their respective strengths these imaging modalities highly complement each other. Correlations of hemodynamics and coronary artery disease (CAD) have been extensively investigated with both modalities separately, though not concurrently due to challenges in image registration. Manual co-registration of these modalities is a time expensive task subject to human error, and the development of an automatic method has not been previously addressed...

We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics...

The study is aimed at developing a near-infrared (NIR) method for predicting solid fraction (SF) of dry granulated ribbons manufactured with formulation variability. The study investigated the impact of unmodeled chemical variability and regression approaches on method performance. The study utilized an excipient-only formulation system. Calibration compacts were created with chemical and processing variability; followed by collection of NIR spectra. Partial least squares (PLS) and spectral slope algorithms were utilized to model compact SF...

Digital technology is regarded as increasingly important in the provision of safe, consistent and optimal health care in the future. However considerable challenges exist in relation to how it can best be used and integrated to support, transform and facilitate user engagement and provide individualised care. Many forms of digital health technology exist already that have improved diagnosis and treatment in terms of early diagnosis and treatment. That said, healthcare, and nursing in particular, remains largely at the periphery of the digital technology transformation and as a result is failing to capitalise on its potential for improving health care and services...

AIMS: This paper critically reviews the use of mixed method research in nursing with a particular focus on the extent to which current practice informs nurse researchers. It also aims to highlight gaps in current knowledge, understanding and reporting of this type of research. BACKGROUND: Mixed method research is becoming increasingly popular among nurses and healthcare professionals. Emergent findings from this type of research are very useful for nurses in practice...
