BACKGROUND: Dog bite injuries represent an important public health problem, involving all levels of care. They can vary in severity, from superficial wounds (skin and subcutaneous tissue) to devitalization and tissue loss, with the presence of systemic infections, aestethic and functional sequels that require specialized treatment. OBJECTIVE: To describe and share the 7-year experience in the management of dog bite wounds in a plastic and reconstructive surgery referral center in Mexico...

Following tooth removal, three dimensional hard- and soft-tissue loss take place. Spontaneous healing makes the defect more severe and results in collapsing tissues. Implant placement is not feasible. In the aestethic zone even fixed partial dentures will not deliver the expected result. Our aim was to demonstrate that only ridge preservation enables implant placement and also provides excellent aestetic result even at frontal areas. CBCT was made before and 6-8 months after ridge preservation. Vertical and socket area measurements were carried out and compared in pre-, and postoperative images...

Background. Most women with breast cancer today can be managed with breast conservation; however, some women still require mastectomy for treatment of their disease. Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) with immediate reconstruction has emerged as a favorable option for many of these patients. The authors combined the SSM technique with the preservation of a small part of the areola with immediate nipple together with with breast reconstruction. Methods. In an 8-year-period 155 female patients (age: 20-52 years old; mean age: 37...

Patients who have received liver transplant are at increased risk of skin complications due to long-term immunosuppression regimen. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and risk factors of skin complications in liver transplant patients. We analyzed 161 liver transplant recipients. The mean age at transplantation was 47.4 years. Mean follow-up was 6 years. Seventy-one percent of patients presented with skin complications, including aestethic alterations, infections, precancerous lesions and malignancies, which represented 57%, 43%, 18% and 9%, respectively...

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the long-term clinical performance of three types of fiber posts after a service period of 7-11 years. METHODS: 985 posts were included in the study: 615 Composiposts, 160 AEstethic Posts and 210 AEsthetic Plus Posts were placed into endodontically treated teeth. Four combinations of dentin adhesives/luting materials were used. Endodontic and prosthodontic results were recorded. RESULTS: A 7-11% failure rate was recorded for the three types of posts...

Provisional restorations are expected to be both aestethically and physically durable during the preparation of permanent restorations. In this study, the staining properties of mouthrinses containing chlorhexidine gluconate, benzydamine hydrochloride and a hybrid mouthrinse were investigated on light and dark shades of a provisional acrylic resin. Totally 80 specimens were prepared and were photographed digitally to obtain the baseline L*, a*, b* values. Each sample was immersed in test solutions for 12 h which was equivalent time to 1 year of mouthrinse use, and the post-treatment images of the test materials were acquired...

A 12-year-old patient case is reported, presented with a desmoid fibroma of the left pterygoid region, extended to the cortical and endosteal regions of the mandible, reconstructed immediately with a free peroneal flap, recovering with this both form and function. To date, 3 years from surgery, he has no complications. Evolution of this case and a brief review of the literature is reported. It is concluded that free peroneal graft for mandible reconstruction is safe and has excellent results, both aestethic and functional...

Our experiences at the "Centro di Profilassi Antirabbica" of the "Dipartimento di Pediatria" suggest to us some thoughts: though the seriousness of the lesions is important also for the patient's aestethics, mostly for girls, the physician must always take into consideration the infectious consequences of the bite itself. Among these bacterial infections mostly frequent enough are those overlapping the deepest wounds as the bites of cates are. Therefore adequate early preventive attendances (within the 24 hours) are necessary...
