It has been reported that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) serve as nucleation sites for the deposition of bone matrix and cell proliferation. Here, we evaluated the effects of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) on bone repair of rat tibiae. Furthermore, because sodium hyaluronate (HY) accelerates bone restoration, we associated CNTs with HY (HY-MWCNTs) in an attempt to boost bone repair. The bone defect was created by a 1.6-mm-diameter drill. After 7 and 14 days, tibiae were processed for histological and morphometric analyses...

A novel sodium hyaluronate-functionalized urea-formaldehyde (UF) monolithic column has been developed by in-situ polycondensation of urea, formaldehyde and sodium hyaluronate (HA). HA plays both the roles of crosslinking and hydrophilic functionalization. The preparation factors including different molecular weights of HA and different amounts of HA were optimized, and then a uniform monolith with satisfactory permeability and hydrophilic binding capacity was obtained. Due to the excellent hydrophilicity of HA, HA-functionalized UF monolith showed higher hydrophilic extraction efficiency than UF monolith, and was applied for hydrophilic in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of melamine (MEL)...

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is a degenerative disease characterized by deterioration of articular tissue with concomitant osseous changes in the condyle and/or articular eminence, joint positive for TMJ noise with jaw movement or function, crepitus detected on palpation on opening, closing, right/left lateral, or protrusive movement. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide of the family of glycosaminoglycans. HA has been shown to improve and restore normal lubrication in joint, provide nutrition to the avascular articulating disc, and stabilize the joint...

Neonatal infections are a leading cause of childhood mortality in low-resource settings. World Health Organization guidelines for outpatient treatment of possible serious bacterial infection (PSBI) in neonates and young infants when referral for hospital treatment is not feasible include intramuscular gentamicin (GEN) and oral amoxicillin. GEN is supplied as an aqueous solution of gentamicin sulphate in vials or ampoules and requires health care workers to be trained in dose calculation or selection of an appropriate dose based on the patient's weight band and to have access to safe injection supplies and appropriate sharps disposal...

The role of Na+ in hypoxic injury was evaluated by a time-course analysis of damage in isolated livers perfused with N2-saturated buffer containing standard (143 mM) or low (25 mM) Na+ levels. Trypan blue uptake was used to detect non-viable cells. Under hypoxia with standard-Na+, trypan blue uptake began at the border between pericentral areas and periportal regions and increased in the latter zone; using a low-Na+ buffer, no trypan blue zonation occurred but a homogenous distribution of dye was found associated with sinusoidal endothelial cell (SEC) staining...

Commercial sodium hyaluronate (HA) and synthetic hydrazide-modified HA were functionalized with diosgenin and two agrochemicals (brassinosteroids DI31 and S7) with degree of substitution ranging from 5.6 to 13.1%. The HA-steroid conjugates were studied with FTIR, (1)H NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. Dynamic light scattering revealed self-assembly of the HA-steroid conjugates into stable negatively charged nanoparticles of around 159nm-441nm in water, which after drying appeared as 140nm-370nm spherically shaped nanoparticles according to transmission electron microscopy...

The glycosaminoglycan (GAG) molecules are a group of high molecular weight, negatively charged polysaccharides present abundantly in the mammalian organism. By their virtue of ion and water binding capacity, they may affect the redistribution of body fluids and ultimately the blood pressure. Data from the literature suggests that the mitogens Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)-A and VEGF-C are able to regulate the amount and charge density of GAGs and their detachment from the cell surface. Based on these findings we investigated the relationship between the level of dietary sodium intake, the expression levels of VEGF-A and VEGF-C, and the amount of the skin GAGs hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate in an in vivo rat model...

Several intralesional therapeutic protocols have been proposed for the treatment of Peyronie's disease. Among all, hyaluronic acid (HA) and verapamil have been differently tested. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intralesional verapamil (ILVI) compared with intralesional HA in patients with early onset of Peyronie's disease (PD). This is a multi-centre prospective double-arm, randomized, double-blinded study comparing ILVI vs. intralesional HA after 12-weeks. Sexually active men, older than 18 years and affected by the acute phase of PD were eligible for this study...

Viscosupplementation with intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid is recommended as a second line treatment for knee OA, after failure of non-pharmacological modalities and usual pain killers. Nevertheless there is still controversies regarding clinical relevance of its effects. Research is looking at the best means to improve the performance of viscosupplementation in order to obtain a faster, more sustainable and more marked effect. Antioxidants have been assessed in combination with hyaluronic acid because the injected hyaluronate is rapidly degraded by the reactive oxygen species present in large amounts in the OA synovial fluid, limiting its residence time into the joint...

Danshen is a traditional Chinese medicine herb that can alleviate osteoarthritis (Soder et al.) symptoms in animals. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood and require further investigation. In this study, rabbits with experimental OA were given intra-articular injection of Danshen (0.7 mL/day) for five weeks. In addition to attenuating the cartilage degeneration of OA rabbits, Danshen decreased the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and MMP-13, whereas increased that of their natural inhibitors, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) and TIMP-2...

BACKGROUND: Loop ileostomy is a common adjunct to surgical procedures for low rectal cancers and inflammatory bowel disease. Ileostomy closure through a limited incision can be technically challenging. We hypothesized that placing a sodium hyaluronate/carboxymethylcellulose (SH/CMC) bioresorbable membrane at loop ileostomy creation would decrease stoma closure time without increasing morbidity. METHODS: In a retrospective review at a single institution with 6 board-certified colorectal surgeons, patients with loop ileostomy creation and closure between September 1999 and December 2011 were grouped based on SH/CMC placement at ileostomy creation...
