The patient was a 67-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The administration of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, ipragliflozin improved her liver dysfunction clinically and histologically. The serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and ferritin levels decreased to normal limits after treatment for four months. Type IV collagen and hyaluronic acid, both of which were serum fibrotic markers, decreased after treatment. Ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a decrease in the fat deposits in her liver...

A 66-year-old man was referred to our hospital with an increasing subepithelial lesion in the gastric antrum. Using esophagogastroduodenoscopy, a tumor with a steep, 20-mm-high rise protruding in the lumen was observed. The mucosal surface of the tumor was reddish, with ulcers forming at the base. Moreover, the tumor was mobile and soft. A biopsy specimen was taken from the ulcer, but tumor tissue was not collected from the submucosa. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) showed a high echoic mass in the submucosa...

Organic dyes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature have recently attracted much research attention for biomedical applications due to their inimitable optical superiority. Although many reports have demonstrated for fabricating AIE-active nanoprobes, the synthesis of AIE-active natural polymers is still very limited. In this work, fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with AIE feature have been prepared through formation of Schiff base interaction between amino-terminated AIE dye (PhE) and oxidation sodium hyaluronate (OSH)...

A recent trial demonstrated that patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with a sodium hyaluronate and corticosteroid combination (Cingal) experienced greater pain reductions compared with those treated with sodium hyaluronate alone (Monovisc) or saline up to 3 weeks postinjection. In this study, injections were administered by 1 of 3 approaches; however, there is currently no consensus on which, if any, of these techniques produce a more favorable outcome. To provide additional insight on this topic, the results of the previous trial were reanalyzed to determine whether (1) the effect of Cingal was significant within each injection technique and (2) pain reductions were similar between injection techniques across all treatment groups...

This paper presents a new approach in assembling bone extracellular matrix components onto PLA films, and investigates the most favourable environment which can be created using the technique for cell-material interactions. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) films were chemically modified by covalently binding the poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) as to prepare the substrate for immobilization of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) coating. Negatively charged polyelectrolyte consists of well-dispersed silicon-carbonated hydroxyapatite (SiCHA) nanopowders in hyaluronic acid (Hya) was deposited onto the modified PLA films followed by SiCHA in collagen type I as the positively charged polyelectrolyte...

This systematic review and meta-analysis compares sodium hyaluronate (HY) with non-HY based artificial tears in the treatment of dry eye syndrome. A literature search for clinical trials comparing HY against non-HY preparations was conducted across PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scopus databases from inception up to May 2016. Majority of the 18 studies selected for review showed superiority of HY in improving ocular staining and symptoms. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining Schirmer's I (SH) and tear breakup time (TBUT) underwent further meta-analyses with calculation of pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)...

It has been reported that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) serve as nucleation sites for the deposition of bone matrix and cell proliferation. Here, we evaluated the effects of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) on bone repair of rat tibiae. Furthermore, because sodium hyaluronate (HY) accelerates bone restoration, we associated CNTs with HY (HY-MWCNTs) in an attempt to boost bone repair. The bone defect was created by a 1.6-mm-diameter drill. After 7 and 14 days, tibiae were processed for histological and morphometric analyses...

A novel sodium hyaluronate-functionalized urea-formaldehyde (UF) monolithic column has been developed by in-situ polycondensation of urea, formaldehyde and sodium hyaluronate (HA). HA plays both the roles of crosslinking and hydrophilic functionalization. The preparation factors including different molecular weights of HA and different amounts of HA were optimized, and then a uniform monolith with satisfactory permeability and hydrophilic binding capacity was obtained. Due to the excellent hydrophilicity of HA, HA-functionalized UF monolith showed higher hydrophilic extraction efficiency than UF monolith, and was applied for hydrophilic in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of melamine (MEL)...

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is a degenerative disease characterized by deterioration of articular tissue with concomitant osseous changes in the condyle and/or articular eminence, joint positive for TMJ noise with jaw movement or function, crepitus detected on palpation on opening, closing, right/left lateral, or protrusive movement. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide of the family of glycosaminoglycans. HA has been shown to improve and restore normal lubrication in joint, provide nutrition to the avascular articulating disc, and stabilize the joint...

Neonatal infections are a leading cause of childhood mortality in low-resource settings. World Health Organization guidelines for outpatient treatment of possible serious bacterial infection (PSBI) in neonates and young infants when referral for hospital treatment is not feasible include intramuscular gentamicin (GEN) and oral amoxicillin. GEN is supplied as an aqueous solution of gentamicin sulphate in vials or ampoules and requires health care workers to be trained in dose calculation or selection of an appropriate dose based on the patient's weight band and to have access to safe injection supplies and appropriate sharps disposal...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A submucosal cushion of sodium hyaluronate facilitates gastric and colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). However, few studies have evaluated the utility of sodium hyaluronate for ESD of esophageal lesions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility and safety of sodium hyaluronate for ESD of superficial esophageal squamous cell neoplasms (ESCN). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 111 ESCN in 86 patients treated by ESD between September 2007 and April 2013...

OBJECTIVE: To optimize the formulation of an emollient for treatment of atopic dermatitis prepared using ceramide, sodium hyaluronate, paeonol, and camellia-seed oil. METHODS: The emollients with different ratios of the 4 components were designed according to the L9(34)orthogonal table with 4 factors and 3 levels. The efficacy of the prepared emollients was tested in 4-6 week-old BALB/c mouse models of atopic dermatitis to determine the optimal formulation of the emollient by evaluating skin water content, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), pharmacodynamics and skin irritation...
