OBJECTIVE: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a serious event that can occur after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Treatment goals are primarily to preserve life, and then the functionality of the bladder. There is no standard therapeutic approach for HC. Described treatment options provide low success rates and are related to potential life-threatening side effects. The aim of this study was to describe our experience in treatment of HC following HSCT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with HC treated at our institution between January 2010 and October 2016...

Infection associated with orthopedic implants is the chief cause of implant failure. An important consideration to prevent the infection at implants is to inhibit the biofilm formation for the initial 6 h. Therefore, we fabricated hyaluronidase-sensitive multilayers of chitosan (Chi)/sodium hyaluronate-lauric acid (SL) onto the surface of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) loaded titanium nanotube (TNT) via spin-assisted layer-by-layer technique. The results of both Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H NMR) confirmed the successful synthesis of SL...

This in vitro study evaluated, for the first time, the safety and the biological activity of a novel urea-crosslinked hyaluronic acid component and sodium ascorbyl phosphate (HA-CL - SAP), singularly and/or in combination, intended for the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases. The aim was to understand if the combination HA-CL - SAP had an enhanced activity with respect to the combination native hyaluronic acid (HA) - SAP and the single SAP, HA and HA-CL components. Sample solutions displayed pH, osmolality and viscosity values suitable for lung delivery, and showed to be not toxic on epithelial Calu-3 cells at the concentration used in this study...

Enhancing the immune response to vaccines and minimizing the need for repeated inoculations remain a challenge in clinical vaccination. This study developed a composite microneedle (MN), composed of a sodium hyaluronate (HA) tip and a chitosan base, for biphasic antigen release and evaluated the potential of using this MN formulation as an intradermal delivery system for single-dose vaccination. Upon skin insertion, the dissolvable HA tip dissolved within the skin for rapid release of the encapsulated antigens, thus priming the immune system, while the biodegradable chitosan base remained in the dermis for prolonged antigen release for 4 weeks, thus further boosting the stimulated immunity...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of varying concentrations of sodium hyaluronate (SH) eye drops on corneal aberrations in normal individuals wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses. METHODS: Normal individuals wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses were enrolled in this study. Subjects were classified into two groups depending on the concentration of the preservative-free SH used (group 1, 0.1% SH; group 2, 0.3% SH). All subjects were asked to blink five times after instillation of the SH eye drop and before the Galilei measurements...

During the development of parenteral dosage forms, different physicochemical studies are required to ensure stable, effective and safe formulations. The osmolality of this kind of dosage form should bear a close similarity to the body fluids to prevent local irritation, pain or even more significant side effects like endothelial damage. The osmotic studies performed in Polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400), Polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG 4000), Poloxamer 407 (P407), Sodium Hyaluronate (SH), Chondroitin Sulphate Sodium (CS), Cremophor RH 40 (CRE40) and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aqueous solutions, showed that the theoretical determination of the osmolality based on their molecular weight as the only determinant factor did not agree with the values obtained by the measurement of colligative properties such as the freezing point depression...

An osteoblast-laden nanocomposite hydrogel construct, based on polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)/laponite XLG nanoclay ([Mg5.34 Li0.66 Si8 O20 (OH)4 ]Na0.66, clay )/hyaluronic acid sodium salt (HA) bio-inks, is developed by a two-channel 3D bioprinting method. The novel biodegradable bio-ink A, comprised of a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-clay nanocomposite crosslinked hydrogel, is used to facilitate 3D-bioprinting and enables the efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients to growing cells. HA with encapsulated primary rat osteoblasts (ROBs) is applied as bio-ink B with a view to improving cell viability, distribution uniformity, and deposition efficiency...

Chitosan-chloride (CHI) and sodium hyaluronate (HA), two semiflexible biopolymers, self-assemble to form nonstoichiometric coacervates. The effect of counterions was briefly investigated by preparing HA/CHI coacervates in either CaCl2 or NaCl solutions to find only a small difference in their tendency to coacervate. Higher water content in coacervates within CaCl2 was attributed to the chaotropic nature of Ca2+ ions. This effect was also evidenced with smaller pore sizes for coacervates in NaCl. Besides, for coacervation of chitosan-glutamate (CHI-G) with HA, dynamic light scattering at different charge ratios indicated a wider coacervation region for the HA/CHI-G pair than the HA/CHI...

BACKGROUND: Hypernatremia is a common problem affecting critically ill patients, whether due to underlying pathology or the subsequent result of hypertonic fluid resuscitation. Numerous studies have been published suggesting that hypernatremia may adversely affect the vascular endothelial glycocalyx. Our study aimed to evaluate if high sodium concentration would impair the endothelial and glycocalyx barrier function and if stress conditions that simulate the shock microenvironment would exacerbate any observed adverse effects of hypernatremia...
