Negative affect (depression/anxiety) and alcohol use among Indigenous youth in Canada remain a concern for many communities. Disparate rates of these struggles are understood to be a potential outcome of colonization and subsequent intergenerational trauma experienced by individuals, families, and communities. Using a longitudinal design, we examined change in alcohol use and negative affect, and reciprocal associations, among a group of Indigenous adolescents. Indigenous youth (N = 117; 50% male; Mage =12...

A rare case of an ascending colon injury and ileal perforation in a 34-year-old male patient due to blunt abdominal trauma caused by a road traffic accident is reported in this study. This paper reports the clinical and imaging findings of seat belt syndrome. The seat belt syndrome primarily involves soft tissue injury; however, lacerations of the colon, small intestine, and mesentery have rarely been reported in the literature. However intestinal injuries, including bowel perforation and mesenteric injuries due to seat belt syndrome, must not be underestimated because they usually require emergency laparotomy because of accompanying peritonitis and hemorrhaging, and can be lethal if left untreated...

BACKGROUND: Isolated perforations of hollow viscus (HV) represent less than 1% of injuries in blunt abdominal trauma (BAT). When they do present, they are generally due to high-impact mechanisms in the segments of the intestine that are fixed. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of major HV injuries in BAT at the "Dr. Domingo Luciani" General Hospital (HDL), and address the literature gap regarding updated HV perforations following BAT, especially in low-income settings...

Trauma is the sixth leading cause of death globally and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in young patients. Blunt bowel and mesenteric injuries are rare, occuring in only 1-5% of blunt abdominal traumas, and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. In this report, we present a case of a patient with sigmoid colon perforation due to ischemia caused by mesenteric injury, who was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain two days after a car accident. A twenty-one-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with abdominal pain and vomiting, having been involved in a car accident as a driver two days prior...

Intramural gastrointestinal hematomas are commonly observed following abdominal trauma or are associated with coagulopathy disorders. In contrast, idiopathic gastrointestinal hematoma is rare, and colonic involvement is sporadic, with very few published reports. We report the case of a 29-year-old female who presented with right hypogastric pain over the last three days. Abdominal CT with contrast revealed an 8.5 × 6 × 7.5 cm pre-occlusive intramural hematoma of the ascending colon up to the hepatic flexure with diffuse edematous wall thickening, indicating colonic obstruction...

The rate of colorectal trauma is 5-10 % in modern war conflicts. The most common causes include gunshots or shrapnel injuries; the contusion-laceration mechanism occurs in sporadic cases in the war zone. Despite modern surgical procedures, however, it is associated with a high rate of morbidity, especially if it is not diagnosed and treated in time. Surgical management is specified by simple scoring schemes - the colon injury scale, rectal injury scale and the Flint grading system. Colonic resection with primary or delayed anastomosis is not associated with a higher risk of complicated healing and is nowadays preferred over the construction of terminal stomas...

Wound soaking is a physical debridement method that helps reduce bacterial colonization and consequently promotes wound healing. Although soaking in povidone-iodine solution was ineffective in reducing bacterial colonization in acute trauma wounds, there is still a lack of evidence supporting the efficacy of this method in treating severe soft tissue infection. This study aimed to explore the effects of wound soaking in 1% dilute povidone-iodine solution on necrotizing fasciitis caused by diabetic foot ulcers...

Many patients undergo small bowel and colon surgery for reasons related to malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mesenteric ischemia, and other benign conditions, including post-operative adhesions, hernias, trauma, volvulus, or diverticula. Some patients arrive in the operating theatre severely malnourished due to an underlying disease, while others develop complications (e.g., anastomotic leaks, abscesses, or strictures) that induce a systemic inflammatory response that can increase their energy and protein requirements...

Many people view Hawai'i as a tropical paradise where people can relax on idyllic beaches. However, for many Native Hawaiians, the Indigenous people of Hawai'i, the desire to continue to reside in their homelands has become impossible. Native Hawaiians have lower socio-economic status, home ownership, and educational attainment compared to non-Hawaiians. Simultaneously, Native Hawaiians have higher rates of chronic disease, asthma, and mental health issues, which impact their quality of life. Despite efforts to address these stubborn problems, the gap between the Indigenous Native Hawaiian community and those that settled these islands continue to exist...

INTRODUCTION: The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the human body and has the function of plantar ankle flexion. When the tendon is exposed, the peritendineum has been breached and the thick avascular tendon colonized with bacteria, a complete resection of the tendon may be indicated to achieve infection control and facilitate wound closure. The Achilles tendon reconstruction is not mandatory, as the plantar flexion of the ankle joint is assumed by the remaining flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum longus and tibialis posterior muscles...

METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 82 adult patients diagnosed with acute diverticulitis...

Microbial communities play a significant role in maintaining ecosystems in a healthy homeostasis. Presently, in the human gastrointestinal tract, there are certain taxonomic groups of importance, though there is no single species that plays a keystone role. Bacteroides spp. are known to be major players in the maintenance of eubiosis in the human gastrointestinal tract. Here we review the critical role that Bacteroides play in the human gut, their potential pathogenic role outside of the gut, and their various methods of adapting to the environment, with a focus on data for B...

Immunocompromised patients account for an increasing proportion of the typical intensive care unit (ICU) case-mix. Because of the increased availability of new drugs for cancer and auto-immune diseases, and improvement in the care of the most severely immunocompromised ICU patients (including those with hematologic malignancies), critically ill immunocompromised patients form a highly heterogeneous patient population. Furthermore, a large number of ICU patients with no apparent immunosuppression also harbor underlying conditions altering their immune response, or develop ICU-acquired immune deficiencies as a result of sepsis, trauma or major surgery...

Colonic intramural hematomas are rarely encountered clinically. They are most commonly caused by blunt trauma to the abdomen. Diagnosis is usually reached by a combination of a detailed history, physical examination, and radiological investigations. A 14-year-old female patient presented to the emergency department complaining of abdominal pain with a history of a go-karting accident. Upon physical examination, the patient was tachycardic and hypertensive, with right-side abdominal tenderness and fullness. After going through routine radiological investigations, a computed tomography scan showed a large intramural hematoma of the ascending colon measuring around 7...

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a life-threatening soft tissue infection, typically caused by preexisting conditions such as trauma, complicated intraabdominal infections, or even small wounds. However, it is very rare for NF to occur as a result of perforated colon cancer (CC). Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical findings, imaging, and laboratory tests. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for patient survival. In this study, we present a case of an 82-year-old female a known case of CC diagnosed 1 month ago...

Morgagni hernia is a rare congenital defect of the diaphragm, especially seen in children but rarely observed in adults. It occurs due to a congenital defect during the development of the diaphragm. Bochdalek hernia is a common congenital form of diaphragmatic hernia. Morgagni hernia is usually rare with a prevalence of approximately 2-3%. Beaver tail liver, which is also called sliver of liver, is a rare variant of liver morphology. Sometimes elongated left lobe of the liver can extend laterally across the midline to contact and often surround the spleen...
