BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: We conduct an annual medical mission to Hospital Ruth Paz para Niños Quemados y Cirugía Pediátrica in Honduras to operate on cases of anorectal malformations (ARM). To improve our knowledge of these patients, we compared their health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and the health literacy of their caregivers from this hospital and ours in the United States. METHODS: The BRIEF Health Literacy Screen (BHLS) and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4...

An FDA alert in December 2016 on the safety of general anesthesia and sedations in patients less than 3 years of age and pregnant women has raised doubts in relation to the attitude that professionals implicated in these procedures should adopt in relation to these specific group of patients. Confronted with this situation, the following medical scientific societies: Sociedad Española de Anestesia y Reanimación (SEDAR), Sociedad Española de Cirugía Pediátrica (SECP), Sociedad Española de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos (SECIP) y Sociedad Española de Neonatología (SENeo), have established a working group to analyze and clarify the safety of these techniques...

Objective: to investigate the effects of music listening, for 15 minutes, on the preoperative anxiety levels in children undergoing elective surgery in comparison with conventional pediatric surgical care. Method: randomized controlled clinical trial pilot study with 52 children in the preoperative period, aged 3 to 12 years, undergoing elective surgery and randomly allocated in the experimental group (n = 26) and control group (n = 26). Anxiety was assessed in both groups by the application of the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale and measurement of the physiological variables, upon arrival and 15 minutes after the first measurement...

Interferon-gamma release assays are widely used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection in Spain. However, there is no consensus on their application in specific clinical scenarios. To develop a guide-line for their use, a panel of experts comprising specialists in infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, microbiology, pediatrics and preventive medicine, together with a methodologist, conducted a systematic literature search, summarized the findings, rated the quality of the evidence, and formulated recommendations following the Grading of Recommendations of Assessment Development and Evaluations methodology...

INTRODUCTION: Currently there is a need for specific training and special dedication to pediatric urology (PU). Nevertheless, we lack of a continuous education program, which must be specific and multidisciplinary. OBJECTIVES: To create a complementary training program in PU with the following differential characteristics: 1) University postgraduate, 2) internationally accredited, 3) multidisciplinary, 4) theoretical and practical, 5) through virtual teaching, 6) with on-site support, 7) academically directed and mentored, 8) based on individual and group self learning, 9) with international faculty and alumni 10) objectively evaluable...

This article combines material from three complementary overviews presented in the Symposium on Pulmonary Venous Anomalies during the Joint Meeting of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and Sociedad Latina de Cardiologia y Cirugia Cardiovascular Pediátrica in Lima, Peru. We discuss the embryologic basis for nomenclature, the hierarchical diagnostic categories, and the important anatomic and morphologic characteristics of anomalous pulmonary venous connections. The anatomic descriptions help to guide an understandable and sensible approach to the diagnosis and surgical management of these various disorders...

INTRODUCTION: Standardization of scientific journals is indispensable for accurate transmission of knowledge, since it guarantees the universality and reproducibility of research. The objective of this study was to evaluate the formal elements of Spanish pediatrics journals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 2005, we studied the characteristics of Spanish biomedical journals with special emphasis on Spanish pediatrics journals. The form used for the selection of journals for inclusion in the database Indice Médico Español (IME) was employed to evaluate 65 distinct characteristics in each journal...

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric surgical literature is characterized by a high prevalence of observational studies and a paucity of randomized controlled trial, comparing mainly medical therapies. AIMS: To asses scientific evidence level produced by spanish pediatric surgeons. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Articles reported in Cirugía Pediátrica, surgical reports in Anales Españoles de Pediatría, and reports from spanish authors published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Surgery International and European Journal of Pediatric Surgery, from 1997 to 2002...

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor is a common world wide mycosis caused by Malassezia spp. and by Malassezia furfur sensu lato. It is uncommon in children and almost always with atypical clinical manifestations. It has been reported as exceptional in children under one year of age. OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical and epidemiological data of pityriasis versicolor in infants under one year of age. METHODOLOGY: This is a restrospective and transversal study of pityriasis versicolor in the pediatric population studied during one year at the Instituto Dermatologico y Cirugia de Piel in Dominican Republic...

The international bibliographic databases (Medline, Embase, Current Contents, etc.) are one of the main sources of information in medicine. Because only some Spanish journals are included in these databases, knowledge and use of the Indice Médico Español (IME) is also important because this database includes almost all Spanish biomedical and scientific journals (basic, experimental and clinical), which provides certain well known advantages for authors and editors in Spain. Of the journals indexed at any given time in the IME (461 journals), those related to pediatrics constitute 5...

OBJECTIVE: To characterize P. aeruginosa strains isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients over a 3 year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective follow-up study was carried out in a population of cystic fibrosis patients. The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAP.D) technique was used to amplify DNA of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples of five CF patients from the Servicio de Neumología y Cirugía del Tórax del Instituto Nacional de Pediatría (Mexico City Chest Clinic of the National Pediatrics Institute) in Mexico City, between June 1996 and June 2002...

BACKGROUND: There is no detailed information on the scientific production in Pediatric Surgery (PS) in Spain, and we studied this problem by means of a model of bibliometric analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of all the articles published in the main pediatric Spanish journal (Anales Españoles de Pediadría) over a 13-year period (1984-1996). Quantitative and qualitative bibliometric indicators of the articles over PS were performed, and we studied also the main differences found between the period before (1984-87) and after (1988-96) the foundation of the journal Cirugía Pediátrica...

The club of paediatric oncology of the Sociedad Española de Cirugía Pediátria conducted a retrospective and multicentric study on differentiated thyroid carcinoma in children. Seventeen cases from four hospitals were reviewed. Initial surgery in all cases consisted of partial or total thyroidectomy, associated in 76% of cases by cervical node removal. In 6 patients (35%) tumoral mass relapsed and 13 cases (76%) hypothyroidism was observed as a post-surgical sequela (in one patient, furthermore dysphonia and hypoparathyroidism persisted)...
