This contribution explores the advertisements for homeopathic products in magazines in the first half of the twentieth century, focusing on the period between 1933 and 1945 and based on the example of the pharmaceutical company Dr Willmar Schwabe. In the first half of the twentieth century, Schwabe Pharmaceuticals was market leader for homeopathic and other complementary medical products (phytotherapy, biochemicals). The example chosen as well as the time frame complement the existing research. We searched three German publications (the homeopathy journal Leipziger Populäre Zeitschrift für Homöopathie, the medical weekly Münchner Medizinische Wochenschrift and the pharma magazine Pharmazeutische Zeitung) and collected target-group-specific results for laypersons, physicians and pharmacists...

Objective. While declarations of conflicts of interest (COI) have become an integral part of medical articles, COIs are often not declared completely and accurately. One of several possible reasons for deficient COI declarations is the lack of standardized and comprehensive COI forms. In 2010, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) introduced a COI form using clear definitions and closed questions. Deutsches Ärzteblatt (DA), the journal of the German Medical Association, adapted this form and implemented it in early 2011...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
Lisa Kühne-Eversmann, Claudia Nussbaum, Martin Reincke, Martin R Fischer
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The participation of doctors in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities provided by medical journals increases. Therefore, their quality and efficacy need to be evaluated. METHODS: This study evaluated the quality of the multiple-choice questions (MCQs) as evaluation tool of CME activities in three German medical journals (Der Internist, Deutsches Arzteblatt, Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift). In total, 390 MCQs were reviewed using evidence-based principles of effective item writing...

BACKGROUND: Several professional bodies have developed influential documents which have tried to describe the essential competences of a good doctor. Such an initiative has not been previously conducted in German-speaking countries. Differences between the published statements point towards the significance of differences in the respective sociocultural setting. METHODS: The first step was to take advantage of a series of standardized written interviews [including the item "What makes a doctor a good doctor?"], conducted with leading German physicians and published serially in the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift...

Gabriele K Lutz, Martin Butzlaff, Ulrich Schultz-Venrath
CONTEXT: The societal costs of low back pain and associated disability are immense. However, very little is known about the etiology of low back pain. Lumbar disc disease was discovered in the last century and became the predominant etiology for back pain. Today we know that for the majority of low back pain cases, a specific etiology cannot be determined. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the evolution of the "disc paradigm" and to compare our contemporary understanding to the scientific discussion in the beginning of the last century...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
R Griebenow, W Lehmacher, P Lösche, L Krämer, S Niesen, J Lee, H Christ, H Stützer, Ch Stosch
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In order to achieve points for the CME certificate of the German Medical Council ("Arztekammer") the reader of a CME article in a medical journal has to fill in an evaluation form that includes knowledge assessment. This article summarizes the data of the first ten CME presentations in the "Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift". METHODS: 4481 completed data sets were evaluated by chi-square and binomial tests using SPSS version 10.0. RESULTS: 85% of the participants were specialists, mainly in internal medicine or surgery: those working in private practice or a hospital took part...

During its short life time evidence-based medicine (EbM) has been subject of partly fierce criticism, mainly from the side of the clinic. In Germany, Rogler and Schölmerich (September 2000) published a critical commentary on EbM in the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift. Our text is intended as a rejoinder. It firstly aims at clarifying the concept of EbM, especially its contribution to the science of clinical medicine, and it secondly answers relevant details of Rogler and Schölmerich's criticism. Their text turns out to be a mixture of truly relevant remarks, exaggerations, misunderstandings and obvious errors...
