BACKGROUND: Toe grip strength is the force of a toe on a surface. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between falls in middle-aged individuals and physical strength factors such as toe grip strength and knee extension strength. METHODS: The subjects were 194 middle-aged individuals (388 feet) who were independent in daily life, received no nursing care, and participated in a health sports event organized by a sports club. We evaluated the body composition, blood pressure, vascular age, systemic response, bone density, knee extension strength, and toe grip strength, and examined their relationship using a self-administered questionnaire survey...

Thermal and photo responsive copolymer based on N-vinylamide backbone was designed. Methoxyethyl group and azobenzene were selected to improve hydrophilicity and photoresponsive moieties, respectively. The N-(methoxyethyl)-N-vinylformamide was synthesized and copolymerized with N-vinylformamide by free radical polymerization. In order to control the nanosized structures, poly(N-vinylformamide) derivatives bearing azobenzene at the N-position near to the vinyl polymer main chain were synthesized by polymer reaction with the poly(N-vinylformamide-co-N-(methoxyethyl)-N-vinylformamide) and azobenzene...

A methodology for the determination of volatile compounds in red wine using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography-ion trap/ mass spectrometry (GC-IT/MS) and flame ionization detector (GC -FID) was developed, validated and applied to a sample of Brazilian red wine. The optimization strategy was conducted using the Plackett-Burman design for variable selection and central composite rotational design (CCRD). The response surface methodology showed that the performance of the extraction of the volatile compounds using divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) fiber is improved with no sample dilution, the addition of 30% NaCl, applying an extraction temperature of 56°C and extraction time of 55min...

Laser ablation aerosol particle-time of flight mass spectrometer (LAAP-ToF-MS) measures the size number of particles, and chemical composition of individual particles in real-time. LAAP-ToF-MS measurements of chemical composition are difficult to quantify, mostly because the instrument sensitivities to various chemical species in the multicomponent atmospheric aerosol particles are unknown. In this study, we investigate a field-based approach for quantitative measurements of ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, OC, and EC, in size-segregated atmospheric aerosols, by LAAP-ToF-MS using concurrent measurements from high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS), and multi-angle absorption photometer (MAAP)...

The aim of this work was to demonstrate the potentialities of the use of a molecularly imprinted (MIP) sensor coupled to a microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) strategy for the selective and sensitive detection of dimethoate in real samples. A dimethoate-polypyrrole MIP film was realised by cyclic voltammetry (CV) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Being dimethoate electro-inactive, K3[Fe(CN)6] was used as probe for the indirect quantification of the analyte via the decrease of redox peaks observed upon binding of the target analyte...

We report here a ratiometric pH probe (Z)-2-(2-(2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)vinyl) -4H-chromen-4-ylidene)-malononitrile over the pH range of 2.44-6.00. It was synthesized by Knoevenagel Reaction from dicyanomethylene-4H-chromene and pyrrolidine. This is the first example of pyrrolidine as a part of the product structure in Knoevenagel condensation. High selectivity and sensitivity for pH variation were observed with significant fluorescent ratiometric responses and a remarkable Stokes shift (about 138nm)...

The ester content is an important parameter to be monitored in biodiesel for evaluation of the transesterification reaction yield and for assessing the purity of the final product. This is also a relevant quality parameter in diesel/biodiesel blends to avoid frauds, because legislation establishes a minimum amount of biodiesel to be added to diesel. The official method EN14103 requires the addition of an alternative internal standard (methyl nonadecanoate) for analysis of biodiesel from bovine tallow because the methyl heptadecanoate is found in high amounts in this product...

3D binder-free CuO nanosheets wrapped nanofilms has been in situ synthesized on Cu substrate by a simple and facile procedure, with an aim of fabricating high-performance glucose sensor. The complex morphology that the nanosheet grown on Cu subtract evolved into nanofilms and eventually converged to nanowires, is benefit for the mass transport and electro-catalysis. Compared the ECSA of the CuO modified electrode to that of the bare Cu electrode, the effective surface area during the electro-catalysis of the CuO/Cu electrode is much larger...

Diseases caused by enterotoxicogenic Escherichia coli F4 (K88) (ETEC F4) are a problem in swine production establishments. Due to the high rate of mortality and morbidity of E. coli infections, a rapid and accurate diagnosis is important in order to choose an appropriate treatment to reduce the economic impact. Therefore, an electrochemical magneto-immunosensor (EMI) was developed to detect and quantify ETEC F4 in swine feces samples through a direct non-competitive immunoassay. ETEC F4 was selectively captured by immunomagnetic separation...

In this paper, reduced graphene oxide/gold nanoparticle/Nafion (rGO/AuNP/Nafion) modified electrode was fabricated through in-situ synthesis and used for determination of copper ions in strong salt electrolyte (0.5M NaCl) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). This in-situ synthesis procedure was based on the ion-exchange and electrochemical reduction. The use of rGO provided a larger electrode surface and the presence of more active sites, while electron transfer was accelerated by incorporating AuNPs...

Meso-tetrakis(1,2-dimethylpyrazolium-4-yl)porphyrin sulfonate (TDMPzP), a water-soluble porphyrin derivative, was synthesized and used as a colorimetric reagent for Cu(2+) detection on a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) using distance-based quantification. TDMPzP showed a high selectivity for Cu(2+) detection in aqueous solutions. When Cu(2+) was added to the TDMPzP under acidic conditions, a color change from green to a pink was observed by the naked eye. Under optimized conditions, the application of this system to a distance-based μPAD exhibited good analytical response...

The emergence in recent years of potentially dangerous new psychoactive substances (NPS) that are not under international control has led to the development of multi-analyte procedures for their unequivocal quantification. A fast ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method (UPLC-MS/MS), in combination with a sample pretreatment based on microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), was for the first time used in this work for the simultaneous determination of NPS in oral fluid. This matrix is an effective alternative to typical biological samples for drug control in substitution therapy programs, and also for the prevention and reduction of traffic accidents...

Herein, we develop a fluorescent strategy for label-free detection of actin by the in situ formation of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) templated copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and the digestion capability of deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I). In this design, the introduction of actin can effectively hinder the enzymic digestion owing to the exceptional target-mediated conformational structure between actin and DNase I. Consequently, the remaining adenine-thymine-rich dsDNA can act as an efficient template for fluorescent CuNPs (λex = 340nm, λem = 585nm) with a Mega-Stokes shifting (245nm)...

Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic and flammable gaseous pollutant often emitted to air as a by-product of water supply, chemical, petroleum and coal industries. It can be transferred into sulfur dioxide in the air under some meteorologic conditions. Herein, we report a novel ratiometric fluorescence method for hydrogen sulfide based on silver nanoclusters and quantum dots. The silver nanoclusters have been self-assemblied onto the surface of silica spheres, which are embedded with red fluorescent quantum dots, to form a dual-emissive nanohybrid...
