Maternal nutrient restriction during pregnancy is a major problem worldwide for human and animal production. Arginine (Arg) is critical to health, growth and reproduction. N-carbamylglutamate (NCG), a key enzyme in arginine synthesis, is not extensively degraded in rumen. The aim of this study was to investigate ameliorating effects of rumen-protected arginine (RP-Arg) and NCG supplementation on dietary in undernourished Hu sheep during gestation. From day 35 to 110 of gestation, 32 Hu ewes carrying twin foetuses were randomly divided into four groups: a control (CG) group (n = 8; fed 100% National Research Council (NRC) requirements for pregnant sheep), a nutrient-restricted (RG) group (n = 8; fed 50% NRC requirements, which included 50% mineral-vitamin mixture) and two treatment (Arg and NCG) groups (n = 8; fed 50% NRC requirements supplemented with 20 g/day RP-Arg or 5 g/day NCG, which included 50% mineral-vitamin mixture)...

BACKGROUND: Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare entity in which a malformed diamniotic monochorionic parasitic fetal twin develops inside a normal co-twin's body, most commonly in the abdominal cavity. FIF is differentiated from the teratoma by the presence of vertebral column often with an appropriate arrangement of other organs or limbs around it. CASE REPORT: A two-and-a-half-year-old girl presented with a painless abdominal swelling in the right hypochondrium. On imaging, a heterogenous soft tissue mass with internal calcific densities was noted in the retroperitoneum...

BACKGROUND: The current recommendation regarding the management of a term newborn delivered of a mother with an intrapartum fever or a diagnosis of clinical chorioamnionitis is that the neonate should have baseline laboratory work drawn along with blood cultures and be universally treated with antibiotics until culture results return. These guidelines report that the rate of intrapartum fever is about 3%; however, a few large studies suggest that the rate is higher at about 7%. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the rate of fever during labor in a large number of deliveries and determine the rate of early onset neonatal sepsis in newborns delivered from mothers with an intrapartum fever compared with the newborns that delivered from mothers that did not have an intrapartum fever...

Ewes experience a temporary decline in resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) during the periparturient period, characterised by a rise in faecal egg count (FEC) that represents a major source of pasture contamination for naïve progeny. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of level of supplementation with digestible undegraded protein (DUP) during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy on periparturient FEC and the performance of ewes with a naturally acquired parasite infection. Eighty-five Belclare and Belclare x Scottish Blackface twin/triplet-bearing ewes were allocated to 1 of 4 dietary groups representing the combination of 2 concentrates (DUP concentration 29 and 94g/kg dry matter) with 2 levels of concentrate during the final 6 weeks of gestation (18 and 30kg in total for ewes with twins; 24 and 35kg for ewes with triplets)...

Fetal cholelithiasis is a rare finding during a third-trimester ultrasound with an average incidence rate of 0.07-1.15%. We report a case of fetal cholelithiasis in twins, observed in a patient with monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy hospitalized at our unit for signs of premature labor. We present the outcome of the 2 neonates with a clinical and sonographic follow-up. In addition, we offer a comprehensive review of the literature available to date.

BACKGROUND: In case of preterm birth in twins, it is not well established if the second twin benefits from a delayed-interval delivery. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this systematic review is to evaluate survival benefit of the second twin from delayed interval delivery compared to the first twin. Secondly, we will evaluate the survival benefit of the procedure when performed equal to or after 24 weeks gestational age of the first born. METHODS: Delayed interval delivery was defined as every attempt to perform a delayed interval delivery with at minimum placement of a high ligature of the umbilical cord and a delay of delivery of at least 24 hours...

BACKGROUND: Although the increased risk for perinatal morbidity and mortality of babies born after ART is largely attributed to a higher rate of multiple gestations, a significantly worse perinatal outcome for singleton pregnancies following ART compared to pregnancies after natural conception has been reported as well. Most studies only include IVF/ICSI pregnancies; studies describing the perinatal outcome of pregnancies after non-IVF assisted reproduction are scarce. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Population-based cohort study with three exposure groups: a study group of pregnancies (1) after ovarian stimulation (OS), with or without artificial insemination (AI), (2) after IFV or ICSI and (3) a naturally conceived (NC) comparison group...

The epidemic of iatrogenic multiple births as a result of infertility treatment are responsible for an unacceptable high incidence of maternal, perinatal and childhood morbidity and mortality. Healthcare costs due to infertility therapy are too high and this may lead to social and political concern. The introduction of single embryo transfer (SET) was a real breakthrough, but was only accepted in most European countries and Japan. The United States, Latin America and most developing countries still have high multiple pregnancy rates...

INTRODUCTION: With the advent of assisted reproductive techniques, multi-fetal pregnancies are on the rise. While caesarean section is the defined mode of delivery for triplets and higher order pregnancies, the picture for twin delivery is not so clear. While a trial for vaginal delivery is attempted, the second twin is considered vulnerable to complications. Whether this translates into worsened perinatal outcomes is not well defined. AIM: To study the perinatal outcome and to identify the various factors influencing the perinatal outcome of second twin with respect to mode of delivery...

The Eurasian beaver is one of the largest rodents that, despite its high impact on the environment, is a non-model species that lacks a reference genome. Characterising genes critical for pregnancy outcome can serve as a basis for identifying mechanisms underlying effective reproduction, which is required for the success of endangered species conservation programs. In the present study, high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to analyse global changes in the Castor fiber subplacenta transcriptome during multiple pregnancy...

Mineral requirements of pregnant dairy goats are still not well defined; therefore, we investigated the net Ca, P, Mg, Na and K requirements for pregnancy and for maintenance during pregnancy in two separate experiments. Experiment 1 was performed to estimate the net Ca, P, Mg, Na and K requirements in goats carrying single or twin fetuses from 50 to 140 days of pregnancy (DOP). The net mineral requirements for pregnancy were determined by measuring mineral deposition in gravid uterus and mammary gland after comparative slaughter...

Macrozoospermia is characterized by a high proportion of abnormal spermatozoa with enlarged heads. So far, it has been associated with mutations only in the Aurora Kinase C gene (AURKC) in some cases. Although many publications have reported failure to conceive in couples with macrozoospermia, a few others have described successful pregnancies, thus raising questions as to whether ICSI and AURKC genetic screening should be recommended in all patients with macrozoospermia. First, we report on two monozygotic twins presenting macrozoospermia for whom the genetic status was explored (Aurora Kinase C sequencing) and whole semen and gradient-selected spermatozoa were analyzed, using Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH), Electron Microscopy and flow cytometry...

The incidence of monochorionic gestation is increased eight-fold following assisted reproductive techniques [1]. Monochorionic triplet pregnancies are rare, occurring in 1 in 45 500 deliveries [2], and are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Both conjoined twins and the twin reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence are unique complications of monochorionic pregnancy. The present study describes transvaginal ultrasonography findings from a monochorionic diamniotic triplet pregnancy at 10 weeks of gestation following double embryo transfer; a TRAP sequence, with a pair of conjoined twins as a "pump" fetus was identified...

In January 2016, Melissa Cook, a California gestational surrogate experiencing a multiple-birth pregnancy following the in vitro fertilization (IVF) transfer of three embryos comprised of donor eggs and sperm provided by the intended father, went to the media when the intended father requested that she undergo a fetal reduction because twins were less expensive to raise than triplets. Much of the legal interest in this case to date has centered on the enforceability of surrogacy contracts. However, the Cook case also raises troubling issues about fertility treatment practices involving gestational surrogates, twin preference, and third-party reproduction medical decision-making...

Background: Indications for surgery during pregnancy have increased. Specifically fetal interventions have increased from conditions that were considered lethal like twin-twin transfusion syndrome and severe fetal anemia to non-lethal conditions like myelomeningocele. The optimal anesthetic agent for in utero surgery is yet to be determined. Success of the procedure is often dictated by the efficacy of the anesthetic to immobilize the fetus without over-sedating mom. Remifentanil is used as preferred agent due to its short half-life however pharmacokinetics in pregnancy is unknown...

There is no consensus about the occurrence of transuterine embryo migration under natural breeding circumstances, neither data related to this phenomenon for zebu cattle. In this study, 5431 reproductive tracts of Nellore cows and heifers were evaluated in an abattoir in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. A total of 1030 animals (19.0%) were pregnant at the time of slaughter (including 2 twin pregnancies). Regarding singleton pregnancies (n = 1028), 39.5% of them, the fetus was located in the left uterine horn and the remaining 60...
