Recent studies have demonstrated an association between congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) infection and microcephaly; however, to date, there have been no reports on the consequences of ZIKV infection on fetuses in twin pregnancies. Herein, we reported on the first case of a monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancy having ZIKV-related microcephaly. Our findings suggested that, in an MCDA twin pregnancy, the ZIKV may cause infection in both fetuses, resulting in severe abnormalities in the central nervous system due to neural cell destruction and the disruption of the normal development processes of the brain...

Amorphus globosus is a rare entity, more common in the cow but also reported in mares, buffaloes and goats. In respect of both development and clinical presentation, this abnormity can be evolved very variably. Previously, it has been discussed whether it is a form of twin pregnancy or placental teratoma. This case report deals with morphology and genetic observations in an unusual bovine amorphus globosus exhibiting a rudimentary clitoris and vulva, gut-like structures and rudimentary bones. The amorphus globosus was shown to be dizygotic to the normal male twin using the BovineSNP50 v2 BeadChip and had a genetical female sex...

BACKGROUND: Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) is associated with an increased risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Several treatment interventions have been described for TTTS, including fetoscopic laser surgery, amnioreduction, septostomy, expectant management, and pregnancy termination. Over the last decade, fetoscopic laser surgery has become the primary treatment. The literature to date reports on many different outcomes, making it difficult to compare results or combine data from individual studies, limiting the value of research to guide clinical practice...

The combination of ram effect with two injections of PGF2α 10-days apart and the same protocol plus an additional injection of GnRH prior to the first injection of PGF2α were examined in Karakul ewes during breeding and non-breeding seasons, respectively. Plasma progesterone (P4) concentrations (to detect the presence of active corpus luteum), twin lambing, litter size and synchronization of lambing were evaluated. In each study 70 ewes (2-4 years old) were divided to a treatment (n = 40) and a control (n = 30) group...

Dietary supplementation of n-3 PUFA decreases the luteolytic PGF2α and improves the pregnancy rate in the dairy cow. However, its effect in the goat is not known. Accordingly, we studied the effect of supplementation of n-3 PUFA rich Fish oil (FO) on different reproductive events in the goat. Cycling goats (n = 30) were divided into two equal groups and fed an isocaloric and isonitrogenous diet supplemented with either FO (TRT; n = 15) or palm oil (PO) (CON; n = 15) @ 0.6 mL/kg body weight for 72 days during the breeding season...

Fetal malformations are more frequent in twins than in singletons. The aim of our study was to define the influence of a malformed twin on di-chorionic pregnancy outcomes. We performed a retrospective cohort study of di-chorionic pregnancies delivered between 2000 and 2015. Exclusion criteria were: both twins affected by fetal malformations, double intra-uterine fetal death in pregnancies without fetal malformation, selective feticide and therapeutic pregnancy termination. We compared maternal and fetal outcomes of di-chorionic pregnancies not complicated by fetal malformations with pregnancies affected by a single malformed fetus with conservative management...

OBJECTIVE: To study fetal aortic isthmus (AoI) shunt dynamics in monochorionic (MC) twins. METHODS: Normal and complicated MC pregnancies were prospectively enrolled. The relationship of isthmus flow index (IFI) with Doppler parameters of umbilical artery (UA), descending aorta (DAo), middle cerebral artery (MCA), and ductus venosus (DV), and with left and right ventricular cardiac output and stroke volume was studied. RESULTS: The IFI was obtained in 180 examinations from 48 pregnancies (24 twin-twin-transfusion syndrome, TTTS; 4 selective intrauterine growth restriction, sIUGR; 12 TTTS+sIUGR; 8 uncomplicated)...

Massive perivillous fibrinoid deposition (MFD) and maternal floor infarction (MFI) are lesions of unknown etiology associated with poor perinatal outcomes, including fetal intrauterine growth restriction and neurodevelopmental injury, high risks of pregnancy loss, and recurrence in subsequent gestations. MFI comprises massive intervillous fibrinoid deposition concentrated at the maternal floor. MFD is a similar lesion but is diffuse within the parenchyma. MFD/MFI lesions represent a spectrum of severity of cloak-like perivillous fibrinoid deposition, and there is mounting evidence that, often, they represent sequelae of immune-mediated phenomena and/or an imbalance in factors that normally maintain the fluidity of blood in the maternal space...

Restricted growth before birth (IUGR) increases adult risk of Type 2 diabetes by impairing insulin sensitivity and secretion. Altered fetal one-carbon metabolism is implicated in developmental programming of adult health and disease by IUGR. We therefore evaluated effects of maternal dietary supplementation with methyl donors and cofactors (MMDS), designed to increase fetal supply, on insulin action in the spontaneously IUGR twin lamb. In vivo glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity were measured at d 12-14 in singleton controls (CON, n=7 lambs from 7 ewes), twins (IUGR, n=8 lambs from 8 ewes), and twins from ewes that received MMDS (2 g rumen-protected methionine, 300 mg folic acid, 1...

Fetal sex plays an important role in modifying the course and complications related to pregnancy and may also have an impact on maternal health and well-being both during and after pregnancy. The goal of this article is to review and summarize the findings from published research on physiologic and pathologic changes that may be affected by fetal sex and the effect of these changes on the maternal and obstetrical outcomes. This will help create awareness that fetal sex is not just a random chance event but an interactive process between the mother, the placenta, and the fetus...

To evaluate the effects of pre- and post-conception undernutrition (UN) on fetal and placental development at mid-gestation, 28 Katahdin × Pelibuey multiparous ewes were blocked by weight and assigned to the following four dietary treatments (n = 7 each): ewes fed 100% (control) or 60% of their nutritional requirements 30 days before mating (UNPre), 50 days after mating (UNPost) or during both periods (UNB). Four twin-bearing ewes were selected per treatment at day 50 post-conception and then slaughtered at day 75 of gestation to analyze their fetuses...

Spontaneous rupture of previous uterine scar due to placenta percreta in early second trimester is a very rare and serious complication. A27-year fourth gravida, second para with previous two lower segment caesarean sections, presented at 17-week of twin pregnancy with acute abdominal pain. Ultrasonograghy revealed 17-week diamniotic-dichorionic twin pregnancy with alive fetuses. The placenta of the first twin was anterior, low lying covering the internal os and penetrating through the entire thickness of the lower uterine wall laterally...

Single fetal death in a monochorionic twin pregnancy is more frequent than in a dichorionic twin gestation. Due to inter-twin vascular anastomosis in the monochorionic common placenta, the death of one twin causes a drop in blood pressure due to a shift of blood from the survivor to the dead fetus. If the drop of blood pressure is abrupt and serious, the survivor will die soon after (as occurs in 15% of cases). If the drop is less serious, the survivor may sustain ischemic injury (in about 26% of the cases) and if the drop in blood pressure is subtle, the survivor will be intact...

Congenital Zika syndrome is an emergent cause of a congenital infectious disorder, resulting in severe damage to the central nervous system and microcephaly. Despite advances in understanding the pathophysiology of the disease, we still do not know all the mechanisms enrolled in the vertical transmission of the virus. As has already been reported in other types of congenital infectious disorders in dizygotic twin pregnancies, it is possible that the virus affects only one of the fetuses. In this article, we report on two cases of twin pregnancies exposed to the Zika virus, but with only one of the fetuses affected with microcephaly and brain damage...
