It is unclear whether vascular function is affected similarly in children with sickle cell anaemia (SS) and children with sickle haemoglobin C (SC) disease. Therefore, we compared micro and macrovascular functions in healthy (AA) children, children with SS and SC disease, and assessed their association with physical activity. Participants (24 SS, 22 SC and 16 AA), were compared in terms of 1) thermal hyperaemic response (finger pad warming to 42°C) measured by Laser Doppler techniques, 2) arterial stiffness determined by pulse wave velocity, 3) daily energy expenditure related to moderate and intense physical activities estimated by questionnaire and 4) fitness level, evaluated by the six-minute walk test...

BACKGROUND: Remote ischaemic conditioning (RIC) is the cyclic application of non-damaging ischaemia leading to an increased tissue perfusion, among others triggered by NO (monoxide). Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is known to have vascular alterations such as increased blood shunting and decreased NO blood-levels, which in turn lead to decreased tissue perfusion. We therefore hypothesized that RIC could improve tissue perfusion in CRPS. METHOD: In this proof-of-concept study, RIC was applied in the following groups: in 21 patients with early CRPS with a clinical history less than a year, in 20 age/sex-matched controls and in 12 patients with unilateral nerve lesions via a tourniquet on the unaffected/non-dominant upper limb...

Objective.: Colour Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) is very important in general vascular diagnostic procedures. Its role in determining the extent of vasculopathy in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) needs further investigation. The aim of this study was to compare the presence of altered arteries with nailfold capillaroscopy and clinical signs of ischaemia, that is, digital ulcers or pitting scars (DU/PS). A feasible CDUS protocol is provided. Methods.: Two thousand five hundred and twenty-eight arteries of the fingers, palms and wrists from 79 SSc patients (32 arteries per patient) were examined using CDUS...

The short spreading code used by the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) B1-I or GPS Coarse/Acquistiion (C/A) can cause aggregately undesirable cross-correlation between signals within each single constellation. This GPS-to-GPS or BDS-to-BDS correlation is referred to as self-interference. A GPS C/A code self-interference model is extended to propose a self-interference model for BDS B1, taking into account the unique feature of the B1-I signal transmitted by BDS medium Earth orbit (MEO) and inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) satellites-an extra Neumann-Hoffmann (NH) code...

Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is commonly used as mechanical support after cardiac surgery or cardiac shock. Although its benefits for cardiac function have been well documented, its effects on cerebral circulation are still controversial. We hypothesized that transfer function analysis (TFA) and continuous estimates of dynamic cerebral autoregulation (CA) provide consistent results in the assessment of cerebral autoregulation in patients with IABP. Continuous recordings of blood pressure (BP, intra-arterial line), end-tidal CO2, heart rate and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV, transcranial Doppler) were obtained i) 5 minutes with IABP ratio 1:3, ii) 5 minutes, starting 1 minute with the IABP-ON, and continuing for another 4 minutes without pump assistance (IABP-OFF)...

Extracardiac arterial stenoses are not uncommon in Williams syndrome (WS); however, data on the utility of advanced cardiovascular imaging (CVI) to assess these stenoses are lacking. We retrospectively reviewed the frequency, indication, and diagnostic outcomes of CVI modalities performed in patients with WS evaluated at a single institution between 2001 and 2014. Data were collected and analyzed from 34 patients (56% female) who underwent CVI during the study period. The median age was 10 years (range 1.8-33 years)...

In this case report we present a 14-year-old boy with two testicles in the right hemiscrotum - a case of polyorchidism. He did not have surgery for his condition, and his condition was followed according to the guidelines. In a study, 6.4% of cases with polyorchidism were found to contain neoplasms of which the most were malignant. If the supernumerary testicle is not contributing to the spermatogenesis, it is therefore recommended to remove the testicle. Otherwise, recommendations are a yearly follow-up by Doppler ultrasound, including a physical examination to discover development of cancer...

The placenta is a vital organ necessary for healthy fetal development. Placental insufficiency creates an in utero environment where the fetus is at risk of insufficient oxygen or nutrient exchange. This is primarily caused by impairment of either maternal or fetal circulation or vascular thrombosis such as placental infarction. As a result of placental dysfunction, affected fetuses may be growth restricted, neurologically impaired, and at risk of increased morbidity and mortality. In a cohort of 4 pregnant Rhesus macaques, we describe antenatal detection of naturally occurring intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and aberrant fetal neurodevelopment in 1 animal...
