Maternal exposure to hesperidin (HSP) and naringin (NAR) during pregnancy and lactation transiently compromised bone mineral density (BMD) and bone structure at the proximal tibia in female CD-1 offspring. We examined whether maternal consumption of HSP + NAR during pregnancy and lactation compromises BMD, bone structure, and bone strength in male CD-1 offspring. Male CD-1 offspring, from mothers fed a control diet (CON, n = 10) or a 0.5% HSP + 0.25% NAR diet (HSP + NAR, n = 8) for 5 weeks before mating and throughout pregnancy and lactation, were weaned and fed CON until 6 months of age...

BACKGROUND Poliomyelitis is a neuromuscular disease which causes muscle atrophy, skeletal deformities, and disabilities. Treatment of hip fractures on polio-affect limbs is unique and difficult, since routine fixation methods like nailing may not be suitable due to abnormal skeletal structures. CASE REPORT We report one femoral neck fracture and one subtrochanteric fracture in polio survivors successfully treated with reverse less invasive stabilization system (LISS) plating technique. Both fractures were on polio-affected limbs with significant skeletal deformities and low bone density...

INTRODUCTION: The femoral stem should protrude from femur by an appropriate vertical distance to allow leg length equalization at hip arthroplasty; this distance depends on the size/shape of medullary canal and implant. The relationship between femoral morphology and achievability of leg length restoration is currently unclear. Our aim was to examine the impact of the femoral canal flare index (CFI) on the risk of leg length discrepancy (LLD) after total hip arthroplasty with different femoral stems...

Preptin is a peptide hormone co-secreted with insulin and amylin from pancreatic β cells. It has been demonstrated to have osteogenic effects both in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, serum preptin levels were measured in pre- and postmenopausal women with similar body mass indexes (BMIs) to elucidate its link with bone mineral density (BMD). Sixty women (30 premenopausal and 30 postmenopausal) with low bone mineral density were studied. The BMD scores, serum preptin levels and serum estradiol levels were measured...

Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) was associated with increased bone turnover markers and cortical porosity of the inner transitional zone at the proximal femur. These results suggest that PTH through increased intracortical bone turnover leads to trabecularisation of inner cortical bone in postmenopausal women. INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D deficiency leads to secondary hyperparathyroidism and increased risk for fractures, whereas its association with cortical porosity is less clear. We tested (i) whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and PTH were associated with cortical porosity and (ii) whether the associations of 25(OH)D) and PTH with fracture risk are dependent on cortical porosity...

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis and related fractures constitute a significant burden on modern healthcare. The standard method of diagnosing osteoporosis with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan is limited by accessibility and expense. The thickness of the cortex of the proximal femur on plain radiographs has been suggested to be a method for indicating osteoporosis and as a risk factor of hip fractures in the elderly. METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken to assess the usefulness of the canal-diaphysis ratio (CDR) as a risk factor for developing a hip fracture, excluding patients presenting under 50 years old, following high-energy trauma or pathological fractures...

MOTIVATION: Cortical bone is an important contributor to bone strength and is pivotal to understand the etiology of osteoporotic fractures and the specific mechanisms of antiosteoporotic treatment regimen. 3D computed tomography (CT) can be used to measure cortical thickness, density, and mass in the proximal femur, lumbar vertebrae, and distal forearm. However, the spatial resolution of clinical whole body CT scanners is limited by radiation exposure; partial volume artefacts severely impair the accurate assessment of cortical parameters, in particular in locations where the cortex is thin such as in the lumbar vertebral bodies or in the femoral neck...

PURPOSE: Reduced range of motion (ROM) in flexion and internal rotation are associated with impaired activities of daily living (ADL) after rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO). This study focused on the morphological variation of the anterior inferior iliac spine in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and its impact on post-operative bony ROM after RAO. This study aimed to investigate the association between bony ROM after RAO and pre-operative morphological factors of the pelvis and femur, including a positional variation of the anterior inferior iliac spine...

Accurate assessment of femoral version is essential to the surgical treatment of lower extremity deformities, yet the ideal modality and technique to measure femoral version is controversial. This study explored two hypotheses: First, there is no difference in the accuracy of femoral version measurement from 2D CT, 2D MRI and 3D biplanar radiography reconstructions compared to a 3D model created from CT. Second, there is a difference between the measured version from traditional axial sections of the proximal femur compared to femoral neck oblique sections for CT and MRI...

We report about an 81-year-old male patient who suffered a medial femoral neck fracture after a fall on the left leg. A total hip arthroplasty was planned based on the appropriate indications. The planning was complicated by the presence of an intramedullary Küntscher femoral nail inserted after a motorcycle incident approximately 60 years ago. After fenestration of the proximal lateral femur, the nail was sawn off and a cemented total hip arthroplasty and plate osteosynthesis were performed.

Sclerostin antibody (Scl-Ab) restored bone mass and strength in the ovariectomized rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Increased bone mineral density (BMD) and decreased skeletal fragility fracture risk have been reported in postmenopausal osteoporotic women receiving Scl-Ab. In males, loss of androgen leads to rapid decreases in BMD and increased risk for fragility fractures. We hypothesized that Scl-Ab could reverse the loss of bone mass and strength caused by androgen ablation in the orchiectomized (ORX) rat model of male osteoporosis...

OBJECTIVE: The experimental induction of cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in sheep is established. To tap the full potential of this ovine model, one should be able to perform a femoral osteochondroplasty safely. This study was based on previous cadaver experiments on the blood supply to the ovine femoral head and on the biomechanical strength of the proximal femur following offset creation. We hypothesized that offset creation in this ovine FAI model does not lead to (1) avascular necrosis (AVN) of the ovine femoral head or (2) iatrogenic femoral neck fractures and (3) can be performed effectively...
