BACKGROUND: We evaluated the role of ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxy glucose (FDG) PET-CT scan in the diagnosis of early relapse in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) who were asymptomatic but had a rising serum CA-125 level. METHODS: Between May 2006 and July 2008, 16 patients with advanced EOC (stages III and IV) who had achieved complete response after cytoreductive surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy were included. These patients were asymptomatic but had a rising serum CA-125 level with normal physical examination and contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis...

We describe here a female patient who presented with a breast mass and giant abdominal mass. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the breast mass and histological examination after modified radical mastectomy confirmed metaplastic carcinoma of the breast. The epithelial components were formed by infiltrating ductal carcinoma with poor differentiation, and the sarcomatous components were formed by fibrosarcoma and osteosarcoma. Histological examination of the abdominal mass confirmed ovarian teratoma. The patient underwent modified radical mastectomy of the right breast and laparoscopic excision of the abdominal mass in the lower right quadrant...

BACKGROUND: Breast carcinomas are very well known to metastasize to the ovary. Hence, it is justified to think of an ovarian mass, in a known case of breast carcinoma, as a metastasis from the same. CASE: A 70-year-old woman underwent ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) from a unilateral ovarian mass to confirm its nature. Cytosmears were highly cellular and showed cohesive clusters of small to intermediate-sized cells with bland nuclear chromatin and moderate cytoplasm in a background of mucinous material...

We report the case of ovarian carcinoma with skin and umbilical metastasis in a 30-year-old female. The computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen showed a right ovarian mass with anterior abdominal wall metastasis. The CT-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) from the ovarian mass showed adenocarcinoma. FNAC from the umbilical and skin metastasis also showed adenocarcinoma. Because of the unresectability of the mass, the patient was put on taxol-based chemotherapy, which she took for two cycles, and then died of progressive disease after three months...

BACKGROUND: Metastases from ovarian neoplasms are commonly encountered in peritoneal fluids. In addition, reactive mesothelial cells in effusion specimens can mimic ovarian serous carcinoma, making the diagnosis difficult. Calretinin has been recognized as a reliable immunohistochemical marker for mesothelial cells, whereas WT1 has proven useful in the diagnosis of ovarian serous carcinoma. This can present a diagnostic pitfall in effusion cytology, because mesothelial cells can demonstrate immunoreactivity for WT1...

During a period of 5 years (2001-2005), six cases of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (umbilical metastasis) were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). In all the cases, FNAC of umbilical nodules was the first investigation and subsequently the patients were investigated for the primary tumor. The primary carcinoma was found in the stomach in three cases, ovary in two cases and one case was of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Based on our findings, we suggest FNAC as an initial diagnostic procedure in cases suspected of umbilical metastasis...

Adult granulosa cell tumor (GCT) of the ovary is mostly diagnosed in postmenopausal women. They typically secrete estrogen, which stimulates the endometrium to proliferate and cause abnormal bleeding. This study reviews the cytologic features of adult GCT of the ovary diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA). We reviewed slides from ten cases diagnosed by CT guided FNA from 1995 to 2007 at our institutions. Smears were stained with Diff-Quik and Papanicolaou stains. Patient's history and histologic diagnosis were also available and reviewed for all cases...

The cytologic findings of a paratracheal metastasis from a malignant sex cord tumor with annular tubules (SCTATs) diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration are described. Cytologic features of SCTATs include the presence of highly cellular aspirates forming simple and complex rosette-like structures around central rounded hyaline material, small nucleoli, and prominent nuclear grooves. These cytologic findings are clearly distinct from the poorly formed rosette-like structures of granulosa-cell tumors and are reminiscent of the low-power appearance of the cribriform variant of adenoid cystic carcinoma...

Fine needle aspiration of ovarian neoplasms is a relatively less frequented area of diagnostic aspiration cytology. Hence, an attempt has been made in the present study to evaluate the current status of Image-directed percutaneous needle aspiration in ovarian neoplasms and to assess its value and limitations in the diagnosis and management of ovarian neoplasms. The present study involves 105 cases of ovarian neoplasms, which were assessed by ultrasound-guided FNAC. Only those cases with adequate material on aspiration and availability of cellblock or biopsy material following FNAC for correlative histopathological study were included in the study...

Breast cancer is the commonest malignancy in women. However, metastatic involvement of the breast is relatively rare. Metastatic disease of the breast is therefore often an unexpected diagnosis in a female patient presenting with a breast mass. The commonest cause is spread from a contralateral breast carcinoma. Of solid tumors at other sites, the most common cancers to metastasize to the breast are, in declining order of frequency, malignant melanoma, lymphoma, lung cancer, ovarian carcinoma, soft tissue sarcoma, and gastrointestinal and genitourinary tumors...
