The classification of diabetes mellitus in adolescents and young adults is often difficult. The diagnosis of the monogenic form of diabetes may have substantial influence on quality of life, prognosis and the choice of the appropriate treatment of affected patients. Among MODY (maturity-onset of diabetes in the young) MODY-1 is rarely detected, only 13 families were described in 2000, and 103 different mutations in 173 families were known in 2013 worldwide. The authors present the first Hungarian case of a monogenic form of diabetes due to HNF4α mutation (MODY-1)...

Cotton plants engineered for resistance to the herbicides, glyphosate or glufosinate have made a considerable impact on the production of the crop worldwide. In this work, embryogenic cell cultures derived from Gossypium hirsutum L. cv Coker 312 hypocotyl callus were transformed via Agrobacterium tumefaciens with the rice cytochrome P450 gene, CYP81A6 (bel). In rice, bel has been shown to confer resistance to both bentazon and sulfanylurea herbicides. Transformed cells were selected on a liquid medium supplemented alternately or simultaneously with kanamycin (50mg/L) and bentazon (4...

UNLABELLED: It is well known that the target blood glucose values are not fulfilled in treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. (UKPDS) The high mortality rate in type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with the augmented cardiovascular risk. It is well documented, that the beneficial influence of high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, and hypercoagulation compared to hyperglycaemia, is a more powerful approach in reduction of cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The effect of medical interventions on alteration of cardiovascular risk and glucose homeostasis is not always concordant: beta-blockers automatically reduce cardiovascular risk, but may result in deterioration of blood glucose values, sulfanylurea drugs effectively reduce hyperglycaemia, but could paradoxically increase the cardiovascular risk...

Type 2 diabetes is one of the biggest public health problems of our age. In the present study the authors analyse the development of the therapy of type 2 diabetic patients. National antidiabetic consumption data and data of National Health Insurance Fund Administration (OEP) were used. From OEP database definite method were used to choose 1002 type 2 diabetic patients. The Hungarian therapeutic practice develops according to guidelines of multi centered studies, and the consumption of antidiabetics dynamically increases...

Hypoxia-ischemia and ATP depletion are associated with cytotoxic edema of glial cells, but mechanisms involved remain incompletely characterized. We examined morphologic and electrophysiological responses of freshly isolated native reactive astrocytes (NRAs) following exposure to NaN3, which depletes cellular ATP. NaN3 caused profound and sustained depolarization due to activation of a novel 35 pS Ca2+-activated, [ATP]i-sensitive non-selective cation (NCCa-ATP) channel found in >90% of excised membrane patches...
