BACKGROUND: A 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) has been licensed in >100 countries to broaden coverage against pneumococcal disease. We assessed whether PCV13 interferes with immune responses to concomitantly administered routine pediatric vaccines. METHODS: Healthy US infants were randomly assigned in 2 studies to receive PCV13 or 7-valent PCV (PCV7) at age 2, 4 and 6 months concomitantly with diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, inactivated polio virus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b, and at age 12-15 months with measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and hepatitus A...

INTRODUCTION: Although the transfusion of blood products is a common therapy, it carries risk of transmission of infections, especially hepatitus B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). OBJECTIVE: As part of the blood safety initiative, the Pan American Health Organization supported studies to estimate the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B virus infection in Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February and September 2003, a cross sectional study examined 500 multiply-transfused patients at four hospital centers in the cities of Bogota and Medellin...

An extended (48 amino acid) synthetic peptide analogue of the hepatitus B virus (HBV) S protein (HBsAg) 'a' determinant has been produced by using 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (fmoc) chemistry and a low substitution polystyrene resin as the solid phase support. This peptide (S121/48) elicited a sustained anti-peptide antibody response in BALB/c (H-2(d)) mice when immunised with Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). Cross-reactive, anti-HBs antibodies were induced, directed against a significant proportion of the conformationally restrained epitope repertoire on the native HBsAg particles...

Structural integrity of the hepatitus C virus (HCV) 5' UTR region that includes the internal ribosome entry site (IRES) element is known to be essential for efficient protein synthesis. The functional explanation for this observation has been provided by the recent evidence that binding of several cellular factors to the HCV IRES is dependent on the conservation of its secondary structure. In order to better define the relationship between IRES activity, protein binding and RNA folding of the HCV IRES, we have focused our attention on its major stem-loop region (domain III) and the binding of several cellular factors: two subunits of eukaryotic initiation factor eIF3 and ribosomal protein S9...

We have examined p53 oncogene/anti-oncogene alleles in 10 different human hepatoma cell lines and 18 primary hepatocellular carcinomas. The p53 allele in these hepatoma cell lines appears to be a frequent target of mutation as demonstrated by Southern and Northern blotting, immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis. In general, the steady state level of p53 specific RNA or protein in these hepatoma cell lines is higher than in normal liver. However, in three out of ten cell lines, normal-sized p53 mRNA cannot be detected...

Nude mice which had received intraperitoneal injection of silica simultaneously with infection of mouse hepatitis virus, NuU strain, died of severe necrotic hepatitis within 2 weeks postinfection, whereas those having received no silica survived for 3 weeks or more after challenge. Silica given day 4 postinoculation had no effect. The virus titers of the liver and spleen at day 4 as well as serum interferon levels at day 2 were much higher in silica-treated mice than those without silica treatment. At day 2 or 3 postinoculation, silica-treated mice were found to have a considerable number of necrotic foci in the liver with some neutrophil and lymphocyte infiltration, and viral antigen was present in the cytoplasm of some hepatocytes around necrotic foci...
