Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RTC) have confirmed the hypocholesterolaemic effect of oats and oat based fibers. However, the mechanisms by which oats or oat fractions lower cholesterol is not totally clear. Recognizing the important role of the gut microbiome in metabolism and metabolic disease risk, we examined the impact of whole grain oat Granola (WGO) on the human gut microbiota and cardio-metabolic risk factors using a randomized crossover dietary intervention in at risk individuals (ClinicalTrials...

AIM: To perform a systematic review to grade guidelines and present recommendations for clinical management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: A database search was conducted on PubMed for guidelines published before May 2016, supplemented by reviewing relevant websites. The Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (ARGEE) Instrument II was a tool designed to appraise the methodological rigor and transparency in which a clinical guideline is developed and it is used internationally...

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder and has a profound impact on women's reproductive health. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of a mixture of fish oil (FO) and wheat-germ oil (WGO) on ovarian dysfunction in diabetic rats. Female Albino rats were divided into control, diabetic and FO-WGO-diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 65mgkg-1 streptozotocin (STZ). Three weeks later, rats were given oral supplement of 0.4gkg-1 oil mix (1000mg FO+100mg WGO) daily for 3 weeks...

To combat vitamin D insufficiency in a population, reliable diet sources of vitamin D are required. The recommendations to consume more oily fish and the use of UVB-treated yeast are already applied strategies to address vitamin D insufficiency. This study aimed to elucidate the suitability of plant oils as an alternative vitamin D source. Therefore, plant oils that are commonly used in human nutrition were first analyzed for their content of vitamin D precursors and metabolites. Second, selected oils were exposed to a short-term UVB irradiation to stimulate the synthesis of vitamin D...

Morphological and chemical transformations in boron nitride nanotubes under high temperature atmospheric conditions is probed in this study. We report atmospheric oxygen induced cleavage of boron nitride nanotubes at temperatures exceeding 750 °C for the first time. Unzipping is then followed by coalescence of these densely clustered multiple uncurled ribbons to form stacks of 2D sheets. FTIR and EDS analysis suggest these 2D platelets to be Boron Nitride Oxide platelets, with analogous structure to Graphene Oxide, and therefore we term them as "White Graphene Oxide" (WGO)...

The theme for the 2016 World Digestive Health Day is 'Your Diet and Gut Health'. The World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) thereby wishes to raise awareness of the relationship between what we eat and gastrointestinal symptoms. WDHD is celebrated each year on May 29(th) . This brief review article on behalf of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology will highlight recent developments in this highly active area of research with a special emphasis on gastrointestinal disorders.

The reported studies related to black seed oil (BSO) and wheat germ oil (WGO) have illustrated that they have a wide range of biological activities. Therefore, enhancing the amount of bio-active compounds that caused higher cell based anti-oxidative effect as well as cell proliferation, etc. in seed oils, infusion of crude plant material has been gained importance as a traditional technique. Herein, we accomplished the infusion of Calendula flowers that also contains many phyto-constituents into BSO and WGO...

Wheat germ oil (WGO) is beneficial for health since it is a rich source of omega-3, omega-6 and tocopherol. However, as it contains polyunsaturated fatty acids, it is prone to oxidation. The aim of this study was to encapsulate wheat germ oil and determine the effects of core to coating ratio, coating materials ratio and ultrasonication time on particle size distribution of emulsions and encapsulation efficiency (EE) and surface morphology of capsules. Maltodextrin (MD) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) at different ratios (3:1, 2:2, 1:3) were used as coating materials...

CONTEXT: Cyclosporin A (CsA) is one of the most important immunosuppressive agents. However, its clinical use is strongly limited by several side effects including hepatotoxicity which remains a major clinical problem. Involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in CsA-induced hepatotoxicity has been reported. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the potential protective role of wheat germ oil (WGO) as an antioxidant against CsA-induced hepatotoxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats (six animals in each group) received castor oil, the vehicle of CsA i...
