AIMS: CDX2 is widely used as a sensitive and specific immunomarker for colorectal carcinoma (CRC) but neither this sensitivity nor specificity is absolute. This study is the first known comparison of CDX1 and A33 against CDX2 as immunomarkers for CRC. METHODS AND RESULTS: As a pilot study, whole sections of 51 cases of liver metastatic carcinoma of different origins - colorectum (n=32), breast (n=3), oesophagogastric tract (n=4), lung (n=3), pancreas (n=8), and prostate (n=1) - were immunostained with CDX1, CDX2 and A33...

Interleukin-32 (IL-32) is a novel cytokine involved in inflammation and cancer development. IL-32 gene consists of eight small exons, and IL-32 mRNA has nine alternative spliced isoforms, and was thought to be secreted because it contains an internal signal sequence and lacks a transmembrane region. IL-32 is initially expressed selectively in activated T cells by mitogen and activated NK cells and their expression is strongly augmented by microbes, mitogens, and other cytokines. The IL-32 is induced mainly by pathogens and pro-inflammatory cytokines, but IL-32 is more prominent in immune cells than in non-immune tissues...

OBJECTIVES: Basic research in the field of acinar cell carcinoma (ACC) as a rare neoplasm of the pancreas is dependent on the availability of pragmatic model such as new pancreatic cancer cell lines. Thus, establishment and characterization of new pancreatic cancer cell lines from ACC origin are deemed important. METHODS: Faraz-ICR cell line was derived from a 58-years old woman with pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma by the collagenase digestion protocol. We characterized the cell line by examining its morphology and cytostructural and functional profile...

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic tumors often represent primary neoplasms, however organ involvement with metastatic disease can occur. The use of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) to determine the underlying pathology provides guidance of clinical management. METHODS: 25 cases were identified in a retrospective review of our institution's records from 2006 to 2016. Clinical parameters and prognosis are described. RESULTS: Metastatic lesions to the pancreas diagnosed by EUS-FNA accounted for 4...

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a representative IgG4-related and inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. To clarify mechanisms of carcinogenesis resulting from AIP, we focused on methylation abnormalities and KRAS mutations in AIP. METHODS: Six tumor suppressor genes (NPTX2, Cyclin D2, FOXE1, TFPI2, ppENK, and p16) that exhibited hypermethylation in pancreatic carcinoma were selected for quantitative SYBR green methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction in 10 AIP specimens, 10 pancreatic adenocarcinoma cases without history of AIP containing carcinoma areas (CAs) and noncarcinoma areas (NCAs), and 11 normal pancreas (NP) samples...

BACKGROUND: According to the latest WHO classification, neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) G3 of the gastrointestinal tract is defined by a proliferation index Ki67 above 20%. Gastrointestinal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy and despite responsiveness to chemotherapy, overall survival is poor. In the last 3-4 years, the heterogeneity of the NEN G3 group has become evident. SUMMARY: In addition to the proliferative activity, the tumour differentiation seems to play a major role, further dividing the NEN G3 group into neuroendocrine tumour (NET) G3 and NEC...

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a well-established technique to ablate dysplastic and neoplastic tissue via local thermal coagulative necrosis. Despite the widespread use in management of several cancers, the application of RFA in pancreas has been limited due to the increased risks of complications from the increased sensitivity of pancreatic tissue to thermal injury and proximity to vascular and biliary structures. RFA has been successfully used during laparotomy for locally advanced pancreatic carcinoma but requires an invasive approach...

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are precancerous lesions of the pancreas. Computed tomography (CT) has been recommended to screen the malignant potential of IPMNs. However, data evaluating the use of CT to differentiate categories of IPMN based on disease progression are limited. This study aimed to explore the correlation between CT characteristics and pathology in IPMN associated with invasive carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 31 patients with intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma (IPMC) treated at one local regional hospital in Shanghai, China, were enrolled in this study...

The mechanism of cell death induced by the ruthenium polypyridyl complexes comprising two 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands as well as one unmodified 2,2'-bipyridyl or modified with 2-nitroimidazole moiety attached by shorter (C3H6) or longer (C6H12) linker was investigated. Cytotoxicity and proliferation assays revealed that the studied Ru polypyridyl complexes are more toxic against human pancreas carcinoma PANC-1 cell line than normal human keratinocytes HaCaT with IC50 of 3-5μM. The Ru complexes despite accumulation in mitochondria do not lead to mitochondrial disfunction, though decreasing of mitochondrial Ca(2+) causes mitochondria membrane hyperpolarization...

A 37-year-old man visited a previous hospital because of left abdominal pain. A contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed a 7 cm solid tumor in the pancreas body, and the patient was referred to our hospital. EUS-FNA showed that the tumor cells were positive for b-catenin in the nuclei, as well as for CD10 and CD56. On the other hand, the cells were negative for chromogranin A and synaptophysin. This is the typical immunohistochemical pattern of a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm(SPN). Therefore, we diagnosed this case as SPN before surgery...

Pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma coexisting with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(IPMN)is extremely rare. We report a rare case of pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma that developed after resection of intraductal papillary mucinous adenoma(IPMA). A 67-year-old man was suspected of having a pancreatic cystic lesion. MRCP demonstrated a cystic lesion measuring 25mm in the pancreatic tail, which had an enhanced nodule. We therefore diagnosed branch duct type IPMN of the pancreas. Although pancreatic juice cytology did not indicate malignancy, we performed laparoscope-assisted distal pancreatectomy...

We report a case where resection was performed for pancreatic metastasis from renal cell carcinoma 21 years after nephrectomy. A 72-year-old man had undergone total gastrectomy with distal pancreatomy and splenectomy for gastric cancer, and right nephrectomy for primary renal cell carcinoma in 1993. Incidentally, a CT scan performed in 2014 revealed a tumor in the head of the pancreas. Enhanced MRI suggested that the tumor contained some fat tissue. The tumor in the pancreatic body had sharp margins; therefore, we performed subtotal pancreatectomy...
