PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between the vitamin D [25(OH)D] level in individual follicles and oocyte developmental competence. METHODS: A prospective cohort study in a private infertility center. Infertile women (N = 198) scheduled for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and a single embryo transfer (SET) provided serum samples and 322 follicular fluid (FF) specimens, each from a single follicle on the day of oocyte retrieval. RESULTS: FFs corresponding to successfully fertilized oocytes (following ICSI) contained significantly lower 25(OH)D level compared with those that were not fertilized (28...

RESEARCH QUESTION: Are maternal concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on a fixed day after embryo transfer associated with duration of pregnancy? DESIGN: A follow-up study of 1917 singleton pregnancies after IVF was performed. Embryos were cultured for 2 days and maternal HCG concentration quantified on day 12 after embryo transfer. Duration of pregnancy was obtained from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Association of HCG concentration (log2-transformed) with duration of pregnancy was estimated as hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) by applying Cox regression proportional hazard models, where time to delivery for pregnancies shortened because of planned Caesarean delivery or induction of labour was treated as censored...

In this study, we propose a modified gold nanoparticle-graphene oxide sheet (AuNP-GO) nanocomposite to detect two different interactions between proteins and hybrid nanocomposites for use in biomedical applications. GO sheets have high bioaffinity, which facilitates the attachment of biomolecules to carboxyl groups and has led to its use in the development of sensing mechanisms. When GO sheets are decorated with AuNPs, they introduce localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the resonance energy transfer of spectral changes...

INTRODUCTION: The main cause of slightly elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) after successful treatment of male germ cell tumors is considered to be pituitary-derived HCG. It is well known that pituitary-derived HCG is frequently detected in postmenopausal women. We evaluated the status of serum HCG in men with elevated gonadotropins, which were induced by androgen deprivation therapy, using commercially available assays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 44 patients with prostate cancer, who underwent luteinizing-hormone releasing hormone agonist treatment...

Progesterone elevation (PE) during the late follicular phase of controlled ovarian stimulation in fresh embryo transfer in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles has been claimed to be associated with decreased pregnancy rates. However, the evidence is not unequivocal, and clinicians still have questions about the clinical validity of measuring P levels during the follicular phase of stimulated cycles. We reviewed the existing literature aimed at answering four relevant clinical questions, namely (i) Is gonadotropin type associated with PE during the follicular phase of stimulated cycles? (ii) Is PE on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) associated with negative fresh embryo transfer IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles outcomes in all patient subgroups? (iii) Which P thresholds are best to identify patients at risk of implantation failure due to PE in a fresh embryo transfer? and (iv) Should a freeze all policy be adopted in all the cycles with PE on the day of hCG? The existing evidence indicates that late follicular phase progesterone rise in gonadotropin releasing analog cycles is mainly caused by the supraphysiological stimulation of granulosa cells with exogenous follicle-stimulating hormone...

OBJECTIVE: Any benefit of oestradiol supplementation with progesterone for luteal support after fresh embryo transfer in in vitro fertilisation/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) cycles remains controversial. In this study, we further addressed this question in cycles using gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist for ovarian stimulation. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary teaching and research hospital. PATIENT(S): A total of 1602 patients were given oestradiol valerate (E) in addition to progesterone(P) as luteal support...

Bisphenols belong to the endocrine disruptors, affecting reproduction even in extremely low doses. Bisphenol S (BPS) has become widely used as a substitute for the earlier-used BPA; however, its harmnessless is questionable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of BPS on folliculogenesis and oocyte quality after in vivo exposure to low doses of BPS. 4-week-old ICR females (N = 16 in each experimental group) were exposed to vehicle control (VC), BPS1 (0.001 ng BPS . g bw-1 . day-1), BPS2 (0.1 ng ...

The objective of this study was to ascertain whether mRNA and protein expressions of implantation-related genes (erythropoietin-producing hepatocellular receptor-ligand A1, Eph-ephrin A1 and leptin receptor-leptin, LEPR-LEP) differed between pigs with high and low number of embryos, and whether these differences in gene expression might affect embryo implantation. Experimental pig groups (n = 24) for high and low number of embryos were prepared by altering the number of eggs ovulated in pre-pubertal gilts treated with 1...

The polycystic ovary (PCO) syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of anovulatory infertility in women and is associated with several clinical disorders. Despite the great amount of research in the area, mechanisms involved in the genesis of this syndrome remain poorly understood. In a recent issue of Clinical Science (vol. 132, issue 7, 759-776), Wang and colleagues, highlight the important role of overactivated C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (CNP/NPR2) system in preventing oocyte maturation and ovulation in PCOS mice model induced by androgen...

Introduction: From its initial report on two female patients in 1979 by J.O. Susac, Susac syndrome (SuS) or SICRET (small infarctions of cochlear, retinal and encephalic tissue) has persisted as an elusive entity. To date the available evidence for its treatment is based on case reports and case series. The largest systematic review described only 304 reported cases since the 1970s. Here we presented the first reported case to our knowledge in Mexican population and the unusual presentation in a pregnant patient...

OBJECTIVE(S): Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG) is secreted by placenta and detectable in maternal serum a few days after embryo implantation. The evolution of β-hCG serum levels is commonly used to confirm early pregnancy and differentiate normal pregnancies from others, either in spontaneous pregnancies or after IVF. However, little is known on the eventual link between blastocyst quality in IVF, pregnancy outcome, and βhCG kinetics. The objective was to evaluate the association between early βhCG rise, blastocyst morphology and pregnancy evolution in a single-blastocyst transfer program STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a University-affiliated IVF center in 441 couples undergoing 455 single blastocyst transfer cycles leading to a positive pregnancy test 12 days afterwards...

Establishing captive breeding populations of amphibians is an important conservation strategy to safeguard against ongoing declines of wild populations and provide broodstock for reintroduction programs. The endangered dusky gopher frog (DGF) has never naturally reproduced in captivity and requires breeding intervention to sustain the population. Methods for inducing ovulation in female DGFs using hormone therapies have not been evaluated. To address this need, we tested four exogenous hormone treatments to induce ovulation in DGFs ( n = 11/treatment), including: treatment (A) gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa); (B) GnRHa with dopamine antagonist metoclopramide hydrochloride; (C) GnRHa and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and (D) GnRHa with hCG following two low hCG priming doses...
