BACKGROUND: Chronic subjective dizziness (CSD) is characterized by persistent dizziness, unsteadiness, and hypersensitivity to one's own motion or exposure to complex visual stimuli. CSD may be triggered, in predisposed individuals with specific personality traits, by acute vestibular diseases. CSD is also thought to arise from failure to re-establish normal balance strategies after resolution of acute vestibular events which may be modulated by diathesis to develop anxiety and depression...

INTRODUCTION: Progressive hemifacial atrophy, known as Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS), was first described by Parry in 1825. There is a progressive atrophy of facial tissues including skin, bones and muscles. Ophthalmic disorders are common and include keratitis, uveitis, cataract, ipsilateral enophthalmos, optic neuritis, retinal vasculitis and scleral melting. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a patient with progressive hemifacial atrophy at right facial side who developed granulomatous uveitis and periferic retinal vasculitis in his left eye...

The aim of this study is to present our preliminary experience with indocyanine green fluorescence (IGF) imaging in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. After dissection of the greater curve sleeve, gastrectomy is performed using a linear articulated stapler. Once the stomach is resected, an indocyanine green solution is prepared and injected in a periferic vein. A laparoscopic system with a high-definition camera system connected to a laparoscope equipped with a specific filter for optimal detection of the near-infrared fluorescence was used at all times as previously reported in a paper of Boni et al...

Atypical presentation forms of hyperthyroidism are always a challenge to the clinician. We present a female patient with the typical symptoms of thyrotoxicosis, without any thionamides treatment before, associated with pancytopenia, which recovered after euthyroidism state was achieved. Although the major cases of pancytopenia in Grave's disease are seen as a complication of antithyroid drugs (thioamides), in this case report the alteration in blood tests was associated with untreated hyperthyroidism. In the literature review, we found 19 case reports between 1981 to 2012, but it has been related to a hypercellular bone marrow with periferic destruction...

OBJECTIVE: The Synergy(®) system, a miniature partial circulatory support device, is implanted with an off-pump, minimally invasive surgical approach. In our experience, implantation of this system is associated with fewer perioperative adverse events than current full support devices. This approach therefore offers the possibility of treating elderly chronic heart-failure patients who might not ordinarily be considered for long-term circulatory support. METHODS: A total of 54 patients (12 patients ≥ 70 years) were implanted with the Synergy system in an off-pump minithoracotomy procedure...

INTRODUCTION: Fenoldopam has been used to protect renal function in critically ill patients and in those undergoing major surgery, where a possible damage of kidney is expected. Numerous randomized studies and meta-analysis demonstrated the efficacy of fenoldopam in this setting. We performed this study to demonstrate the feasibility of administering fenoldopam, trough an elastomeric pump connected to a peripheral vein, to patients undergoing nephron sparing surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients, ASA physical status class I-III, undergoing laparoscopic or laparotomic renal tumorectomy were enrolled...

We report on a twenty-two months old male patient with hypotonia, mental and motor retardation and trigonocephaly. Standard GTG banding chromosomal analysis (from metaphyses of a periferal blood lymphocyte culture) showed 46,XY, der(9) monosomy 9pter-->p22, trisomy 10q26--> qter karyotype. This unbalanced translocation resulted from the father's t(9,10) (p22;p26) karyotype. Deletions of the terminal part of 9p and partial trisomy of chromosome 10q are rare chromosomal disorders. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature of a deletion of 9pter-->p22...
