RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
Mert Erogul, Gary Singer, Thomas McIntyre, Dimitre G Stefanov
BACKGROUND: Medical students experience a high burden of stress and suffer elevated rates of depression, burnout, and suicide compared to the general population, yet there is no consensus on how to address student wellness. PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether an abridged mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention can improve measures of wellness in a randomized sample of 1st-year medical students. METHODS: Fifty-eight participants were randomized to control or 8-week MBSR intervention and then invited to participate in the study...

A search for new dielectron-mass resonances using data recorded by the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7  fb(-1) is presented. No significant excess over the expected standard model prediction is observed. In this data set, an event with the highest dielectron mass ever observed (960  GeV/c(2)) was recorded. The results are interpreted in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. Combined with the 5.4  fb(-1) diphoton analysis, the RS-graviton lower-mass limit for the coupling k/M¯(Pl)=0...

Improved testing and remediation procedures for sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons are a priority in remote cold regions such as Antarctica, where costs are higher and remediation times are longer. Isoprenoid/n-alkane ratios are commonly used to determine the extent of biodegradation at low levels but are not useful once the n-alkanes have been removed. This study demonstrates how the diastereomers of the acyclic isoprenoids can be used to determine the extent of biodegradation in moderately biodegraded fuel in soils from a bioremediation trial at Casey Station, Antarctica...

BACKGROUND: Coronary atherosclerotic disease remains the leading cause of death in the Western world. Although the exact sequence of events in this process is controversial, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RS) likely play an important role in vascular cell dysfunction and atherogenesis. Oxidative damage to the mitochondrial genome with resultant mitochondrial dysfunction is an important consequence of increased intracellular RS. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the contribution of mitochondrial oxidant generation and DNA damage to the progression of atherosclerotic lesions in human arterial specimens and atherosclerosis-prone mice...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Starch that escapes digestion in the small intestine (resistant starch [RS]) may act similarly to nonstarch polysaccharides in the colon. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of raw potato starch alone and in combination with wheat bran on tumor development and precancer events in a rat model of colorectal cancer. METHODS: Three groups of rats received either a low-RS/low-fiber ("basic") diet, the basic diet containing raw potato starch as 20% of carbohydrate content, or the potato starch diet plus 10% of "wheat bran" fiber...

Twenty patients suffering from endogenous depression were treated with maprotiline for 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected at weekly intervals and severity of depression assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. No simple relationship between plasma maprotiline concentration and amelioration score was observed at week 3 (rs = 0.25) or week 4 (rs = -0.05). No significant difference in plasma concentrations between responders and non-responders was observed at week 4. Maprotiline was effective as an antidepressant in some patients...

Two hundred forty-nine well-characterized difficult distal bypasses, entered into a multicenter dextran 40 trial, were reevaluated after 3 years. Seventy in situ (IS) vein grafts, 49 reversed saphenous (RS) vein grafts, 60 polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts, and 70 umbilical vein (UV) grafts were used. Primary and secondary patency rates at 3 years were, respectively, 84% and 90% for IS, 66% and 73% for RS, 35% and 48% for PTFE, and 24% and 32% for UV. Subgroup analysis according to the site of distal anastomosis showed no significant differences in primary patency among these grafts at the above-knee level but significant differences between both vein grafts (IS and RV) and the others (PTFE and UV) below the knee (78% vs 31%, respectively)...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of an abnormal bleeding time in patients with cirrhosis and to relate this to known factors that affect primary haemostasis and to the severity of liver disease. DESIGN: Prospective clinical and laboratory study in patients admitted for complications or investigations of liver disease. SETTING: Royal Free Hospital hepatobiliary and liver transplantation unit. SUBJECTS: 100 Consecutive inpatients aged 17-74 with various forms of cirrhosis, including alcoholic, biliary, autoimmune, viral, and cryptogenic...
