PURPOSE: We present a series of cases of mandibular symphysis fractures treated at our institution with a 3-dimensional strut plate. The aim of the present study was to confirm the stability of this fixation technique and discuss its advantages, disadvantages, and potential complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed and implemented a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent surgery by the same surgeon at our institution from July 2012 to April 2014 for a mandible fracture with a symphysis component...

We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane library, the Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database, the Chinese Scientific Journal Full-text Database, the Chinese Journal Full-text Database, and the Wanfang Database to collect observational studies on the effects of ovary-saving surgery in comparison to bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) in young patients with early-stage endometrial cancer (EC). The literature search included studies up to March 2017, and 10 retrospective cohort studies met our selection criteria...

INTRODUCTION: Surgery, a crucial therapeutic modality in the treatment of solid tumors, can induce sterile inflammatory processes which can result in metastatic progression. Liver ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury, an inevitable consequence of hepatic resection of metastases, has been shown to foster hepatic capture of circulating cancer cells and accelerate metastatic growth. Efforts to reduce these negative consequences have not been thoroughly investigated. Drag reducing polymers (DRPs) are blood-soluble macromolecules that can, in nanomolar concentrations, increase tissue perfusion, decrease vascular resistance and decrease near-wall microvascular concentration of neutrophils and platelets thereby possibly reducing the inflammatory microenvironment...

We investigated retrospectively whether immunologic markers from a complete blood count (CBC) are associated with the responsiveness to preoperative chemoradiotherapy (PCRT) and oncologic outcomes in 984 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) who also underwent radical surgery from 2005 to 2013. CBC parameters including the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were recorded. Pathologic responses to PCRT were evaluated in the resected specimens using the tumor regression grade system...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) technology has theoretical advantages in comparison with traditional adjuvant radiation therapy (whole-breast irradiation; WBI) after breast-conserving surgery. However, published randomized controlled trials have shown inconsistent outcomes. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness and safety of APBI technology is needed. RESULTS: A total of 7 studies of 7452 patients were included in this analysis...

BACKGROUND: The identification of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangements is found in approximately 5% of non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). However, the development of liquid biopsies as a diagnostic tool is less developed in these cases. This study investigates the use of CTCs during treatment, together with an extended follow-up to correlate with clinical evolution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 13 patients out of a cohort of 212 patients with lung adenocarcinoma, presented ALK rearrangements (6%) confirmed by tumor biopsy...

The long noncoding RNA HOTAIR promotes the development and progression of several tumors. Here, the clinical significance and role of HOTAIR in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) tumorigenesis were explored. The results showed that increased expression of HOTAIR predicted a poor prognosis of RCC after surgery. HOTAIR promoted RCC cell proliferation and growth in vitro and in vivo. The expressions of HOTAIR and Salvador homolog 1 (SAV1) were inversely correlated in clinical RCC samples. HOTAIR downregulated SAV1 by directly binding to the SAV1 protein and enhanced histone H3K27 methylation...

Survival improvement in rectal cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is achieved only if pathological response occurs. Mandard tumor regression grade (TRG) proved to be a valid system to measure nCRT response. The ability to predict tumor response before treatment may significantly have impact the selection of patients for nCRT in rectal cancer. The aim is to identify potential predictive pretreatment factors for Mandard response and build a clinical predictive model design. 167 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer were treated with nCRT and curative surgery...

Premature senescence is associated with atrial fibrosis and has an antifibrotic effect in mice. However, the role of senescence in atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. Here, we investigated the association of premature senescence with fibrosis and also determined the role of senescence in the recurrence of AF after surgery ablation. Western blot, Sirius red staining, SA-β-gal staining and immunohistochemistry were performed to detect the degree of atrial fibrosis ,the expression of TGF-β and collagens, and also the senescence markers in 72 tissue specimens of left atrial appendage in this study...

Context: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is a key regulator of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations. In patients with severe obesity, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) surgery induces substantial weight loss and favourably influence lipoprotein metabolism. The impact of BPD-DS surgery on PCSK9 levels is unknown. Objectives: To determine the acute and chronic impact of BPD-DS surgery on PCSK9 levels and whether the acute impact of BPD-DS could be explained by BPD-DS surgery-associated caloric restriction (CR)...

Context: Angiopoietin-like 8 (ANGPTL8) has been identified as a key regulator of lipid metabolism. Design: We addressed the correlation between ANGPTL8 mRNA with hallmark insulin-regulated and lipogenic genes in human adipose tissue. The regulation of ANGPTL8 expression in adipocytes was studied after inflammatory challenge, and the role of microRNA-221-3p therein was investigated. Results: ANGPTL8 gene expression in subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue was highly correlated with SLC2A4/GLUT4 and ADIPOQ/Adiponectin...

Context: Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) 19 and FGF21 are secreted by the intestine and liver in response to macronutrient intake. Intestinal resection and reconstruction via bariatric surgery may alter their regulation. Objective: We tested the hypothesis that weight loss induced by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, but not matched weight loss induced by laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), increases postprandial plasma FGF19 and FGF21 concentrations...

Background: Female to male ratio in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is 3:1, but data on gender impact on the clinical presentation are limited. Methods: We evaluated retrospectively gender difference in biochemistry and clinical presentation at diagnosis in a monocentric series of 417 patients with PHPT: 93 men (58.6 ±14.5 years), and 324 women (61.7 ± 12.8 years), of whom 54 were pre-menopausal (pre-F) and 270 post-menopausal (post-F). Bone defects are common and are associated with a significant burden of disease. The treatment of these injuries remains controversial, particularly those defects which are critical sized. Despite the need for decision making to be evidence based, a lack of consensus around definitions of critical-sized defects still exists, particularly around those defects in the 1-3 cm range. There is a need to define "critical" in bone defect size because noncritical defects may heal without planned reconstruction and secondary surgery...
