Transgender MtF people (trans women) consult otorhinolaryngologists and vocologists with the aim of feminizing their voice and being consistently perceived as women. Treatment of these trans women always begins with a vocal assessment that is relatively unspecific as it was originally constructed for individuals with dysphonia. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the subjective portion of the assessment and specifically the self-assessment questionnaire. There is no French-language questionnaire designed to identify the issues facing people who want voice feminization and quantify the impact of their voice disorder on their daily lives...

OBJECTIVE: To compare voice feminization and quality of life (QoL) of Male-to-Female Transsexuals (MtF Ts) after cricothyroid approximation (CTA) or glottoplasty (GL). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Fifty-three MtF Ts were studied between 2007 and 2016. Voice assessment was based on fundamental frequency (F0 ), perceptual rating on GBRAS Hirano scale (Grade, Breathiness, Roughness, Asthenia, Strain), QoL related to voice on the Voice Handicap Index-10 Spanish validated version (VHI-10 Sv) and self-perceived femininity of the voice (SpFv), and overall satisfaction with the surgical technique (Sst) on a visual analogue scale (VAS)...

BACKGROUND: The sickest Australians are often those belonging to non-privileged groups, including Indigenous Australians, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, intersex and queer people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, and people with disabilities and low English literacy. These consumers are not always engaged by, or included within, mainstream health services, particularly in rural Australia where health services are limited in number and tend to be generalist in nature...

Transgender or gender dysphoria has been defined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), as distress resulting from the incongruence between one's experienced gender and one's assigned gender, along with a persistent and strong desire to be of another gender, and accompanied by clinically significant distress. Adolescents referred for evaluation often want hormonal therapy and several among them also express a desire for gender reassignment surgery. Furthermore, evidence shows that adolescents and adults with gender dysphoria without a sex development disorder, before gender reassignments, are at increased risk for suicide...

Research suggests that transgender young offenders are a uniquely vulnerable caseload that may benefit from speech pathology intervention to help bring their voice into alignment with their gender identity. However, no previous studies have investigated treatment efficacy in this population. This study investigated the impact of intensive voice feminisation therapy targeting fundamental frequency and oral resonance in a 17 year old transgender individual within a youth justice institution. Acoustic analysis, listener and self-ratings of vocal femininity, self-ratings of vocal satisfaction, a post-treatment structured interview, and pre- and post- treatment completion of the Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) were utilised to determine treatment impact...

OBJECTIVE: Facial feminization surgery is becoming a more frequently requested procedure in transsexual male to female patients transformation. A global way of reporting outcomes data and showing the beneficial impact of this specific procedure is necessary. The objective of this study is to develop a reliable and valid tool to report patients' outcomes after facial feminization surgery. METHODS: A systematic literature review, input from experts working with transsexual patients and patient interviews were used to develop the conceptual framework of the questionnaire...

Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide a systematic review of the aspects of verbal communication contributing to listener perceptions of speaker gender with a view to providing clinicians with guidance for the selection of the training goals when working with transsexual individuals. Method: Preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines were adopted in this systematic review. Studies evaluating the contribution of aspects of verbal communication to listener perceptions of speaker gender were rated against a new risk of bias assessment tool...

This paper examines current psychoanalytic engagements with the use of hormone blockers in transsexual children and the underlying premises concerning our understanding of the child's process of coming into his or her gendered self. Rather than taking sides in the debate, I explore how the "hormones question" becomes entangled in a series of misreadings and displacements through which the child's request could potentially be missed. In examining psychoanalytic conceptualizations of the trans child's agency, autonomy, and future and the relation between the natal body and gender, I ask, how is psychoanalytic discourse implicated in the very dilemmas it attempts to elucidate? Specifically, the essay examines critically the psychoanalytic use of continuity, authenticity, and alignment as implicit ideals, interrogates the focus on mourning as therapeutic horizon, and proposes that we conceive of gender as a good-enough placeholder with the potential to carry us from the ideal of continuity to an ethos of contiguity...

The World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association consider transsexuality a pathology and suggest sex-gender reassignment for the biopsychic adjustment of trans people. Through the discursive analysis of experience, this study describes the processes of medicalization and gender performativity in relation to the health of a group of trans women from Mexico City. For this purpose, a qualitative study was conducted in which 10 semi-structured interviews were carried out in 2015. As part of medicalization, the pathologization of transsexuality generated psychic suffering; on the other hand, sex-gender reassignment also entailed additional risks...

BACKGROUND: Health care for transgender and transsexual (ie, trans) individuals has long been based on a binary understanding of gender (ie, feminine vs masculine). However, the existence of non-binary or genderqueer (NBGQ) genders is increasingly recognized by academic and/or health care professionals. AIM: To gain insight into the individual health care experiences and needs of binary and NBGQ individuals to improve their health care outcomes and experience. METHODS: Data were collected using an online survey study on experiences with trans health care...

The Spanish Health Information System (HIS) collects health information. Trans people have poorer health status. This paper aimed to assess the adequacy of the HIS to collect the health data on trans individuals. The HIS sources available in the Statistical Portal of the National Health System were reviewed. The sources containing population health data were selected. The variables "sex" and "gender identity" were searched. Nineteen sources were identified. In all of them the variable "sex" was found, whereas "gender identify" did not appear in any of the 19...

This article examines the case files of patients diagnosed with Transvestitismus [transvestism] in the Psychiatric Clinic of the Helsinki University Central Hospital in the years 1954-68. These individuals did not only want to cross-dress, but also had a strong feeling of being of a different sex from their assigned one. The scientific concept of transsexuality had begun to take form, and this knowledge reached Finland in phases. The case files of the transvestism patients show that they were highly aware of their condition and were very capable of describing it, even if they had no medical name for it...

In transgender surgery, the ideal neophallus is one that: (a) is constructed using a reproducible procedure, (b) possesses tactile and erogenous sensation, (c) is large and rigid enough (naturally, or using a prosthesis) to permit penetrative intercourse, (d) leaves acceptable donor site morbidity, (e) results in esthetically satisfactory appearance, and (f) allows for voiding while standing. The musculocutaneous latissimus dorsi (MLD) flap has favorable results in the area of neophalloplasty. Among its advantages are acceptable donor site appearance, stiffness sufficient for intercourse, and esthetically satisfactory genital appearance...

PURPOSE: Data on the health and well-being of the transgender population are limited. However, using claims data we can identify transgender Medicare beneficiaries (TMBs) with high confidence. We seek to describe the TMB population and provide comparisons of chronic disease burden between TMBs and cisgender Medicare beneficiaries (CMBs), thus laying a foundation for national level TMB health disparity research. METHODS: Using a previously validated claims algorithm based on ICD-9-CM codes relating to transsexualism and gender identity disorder, we identified a cohort of TMBs using Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) claims data...
