Biochar-supported nanocatalysts emerged as unique materials for environmental remediation. Herein, sugarcane pulp bagasse (SCPB) was wet-impregnated with Cu(NO3 )2 3H2 O and Ni(NO3 )2 6H2 O, then pyrolyzed at 500 °C, under N2 , for 1 h. We specifically focused on sugarcane pulp instead of SCB and biochar materials. The metal nitrate to biomass ratio was set at 0.5, 1, and 2 mmol/g, with Cu/Ni initial ratio = 1. The process provided hierarchically structured porous biochar, topped with evenly dispersed 40 nm-sized CuNi alloy nanoparticles (SCPBB@CuNi)...

Rice-rape rotation is a widely practiced cropping system in China. However, changes in soil properties and management could change the bioavailability of Cd, In order to explore the occurrence state, transportation and transformation characteristics of heavy metals Cd and Zn in rice-rape rotation system in Guizhou karst area with high background value of Cd. In the karst rice-rape rotation area, the physical and chemical properties of soil, chemical specifications and activities of Cd and Zn at different soil depths and during various crop growth stages, and the bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn in different tissues of rice and rape were studied by field experiment and laboratory analysis...

The immunoreceptor NKG2D, which is expressed on NK cells and T cell subsets is critically involved in tumor immune surveillance. This applies in particular to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which evades immune detection by downregulation of NKG2D ligands (NKG2D-L), including MICA. The absence of NKG2D-L on AML cells is moreover associated with leukemia stem cell characteristics. The NKG2D/NKG2D-L system thus qualifies as an interesting and promising therapeutic target. Here we aimed to identify transcription factors susceptible to pharmacological stimulation resulting in the expression of the NKG2D-L MICA in AML cells to restore anti-tumor activity...

A vast variety of inflorescence architectures have evolved in angiosperms. Here, we analyze the diversity and development of the woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) inflorescence. Contrary to historical classifications, we show that it is a closed thyrse: a compound inflorescence with determinate primary monopodial axis and lateral sympodial branches, thus combining features of racemes and cymes. We demonstrate that this architecture is generated by two types of inflorescence meristems differing in their geometry...

In this article, we explore the extraction of recursive nested structure in the processing of binary sequences. Our aim was to determine whether humans learn the higher-order regularities of a highly simplified input where only sequential-order information marks the hierarchical structure. To this end, we implemented a sequence generated by the Fibonacci grammar in a serial reaction time task. This deterministic grammar generates aperiodic but self-similar sequences. The combination of these two properties allowed us to evaluate hierarchical learning while controlling for the use of low-level strategies like detecting recurring patterns...

METHODS: Individuals from the Osteoarthritis Initiative with available Kellgren/Lawrence (K/L) grade and numerical rating scale (NRS) data at baseline were included in this study. Pain severity was classified into 3 categories based on NRS scores: no pain, mild pain, and moderate/severe pain. Knee OA severity was stratified into 4 categories according to the K/L system...

Microplastics (MPs), an emerging pollutant, have been increasingly raising concern due to the potential impacts on aquatic organisms. Moreover, the environmental aged MPs always exhibit different environmental behavior and interaction effect with organic pollutants from virgin MPs. In this work, the single and combined toxicity impact on Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a symbiont representative, has been investigated between MPs (e.g., polyamide microplastic (PA6), 75 μm) and organic pollutants (e.g., sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and dicamba (DCB))...

The impact of temperature on a freshly precipitated ThO2 (am, hyd) solid phase was investigated using a combination of undersaturation solubility experiments and a multi-method approach for the characterization of the solid phase. XRD and EXAFS confirm that ageing of ThO2 (am, hyd) at T = 80°C promotes a significant increase of the particle size and crystallinity. TG-DTA and XPS support that the ageing process is accompanied by an important decrease in the number of hydration waters/hydroxide groups in the original amorphous Th(IV) hydrous oxide...

BACKGROUND: Ambient assisted living (AAL) is a common name for various artificial intelligence (AI)-infused applications and platforms that support their users in need in multiple activities, from health to daily living. These systems use different approaches to learn about their users and make automated decisions, known as AI models, for personalizing their services and increasing outcomes. Given the numerous systems developed and deployed for people with different needs, health conditions, and dispositions toward the technology, it is critical to obtain clear and comprehensive insights concerning AI models used, along with their domains, technology, and concerns, to identify promising directions for future work...

Agricultural wastes exhibit their potential in remediation materials due to their low cost; however, raw agricultural wastes have a low ability to immobilize heavy metals in soil. Dynamic behaviors of the newly deposited atmospheric heavy metals in the soil-pak choi ( Brassica chinensis L.) system are investigated by a fully factorial atmospheric exposure experiment using soils exposed to 0.5-year and 1.5-year atmospheric depositions. The results showed approximately 17-87%, 19-64%, and 43-84% of the Cu, Cd, and Pb in pak choi edible parts were contributed from the new depositions, respectively. For the newly deposited metals, foliar uptake was the key pathway of shoot bioaccumulation rather than from root uptake of the deposited metals in soils, resulting in no significant soil contribution differences between pak chois growing in 0...

This article details the GesEPOC 2021 recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of COPD exacerbation syndrome (CES). The guidelines propose a definition-based syndromic approach, a new classification of severity, and the recognition of different treatable traits (TT), representing a new step toward personalized medicine. The evidence is evaluated using GRADE methodology, with the incorporation of 6 new PICO questions. The diagnostic process comprises four stages: 1) establish a diagnosis of CES, 2) assess the severity of the episode, 3) identify the trigger, and 4) address TTs...

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) caused hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a serious threat to the health of young children. Although type I interferon (IFN-I) has been proven to control EV71 replication, the key downstream IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) remains to be clarified and investigated. Recently, we found that 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetases 3 (OAS3), as one of ISG of IFN-β1b, was antagonized by EV71 3C protein. Here, we confirm that OAS3 is the major determinant of IFN-β1b-mediated EV71 inhibition, which depends on the downstream constitutive RNase L activation...

This study aims to assess the environmental performance of two biorefinery systems: the first one focuses only on the production of isobutene (I) and the second one on the co-production with lignin (I+L), both from the valorisation of wheat straw...
