Genotoxic impurities (GTIs) are potential carcinogens that need to be controlled down to ppm or lower concentration levels in pharmaceuticals under strict regulations. The static headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) coupled with electron capture detection (ECD) is an effective approach to monitor halogenated and nitroaromatic genotoxins. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) possess tunable physico-chemical properties and low vapor pressure for HS-GC methods. In this study, zwitterionic and non-ionic DESs have been used for the first time to develop and validate a sensitive analytical method for the analysis of 24 genotoxins at sub-ppm concentrations...

In this study, a novel piperidinium-sulfonate based zwitterionic hydrophilic monolith was prepared through thermally initiated co-polymerization of a piperidinium-sulfonate monomer 3-(4-((methacryloyloxy)methyl)-1-methylpiperidin-1-ium-1-yl)propane-1-sulfonate (MAMMPS), and a hydrophilic crosslinker N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) using n-propanol and H2 O as porogenic system. Satisfactory mechanical and chemical stabilities, good repeatability and high column efficiency (120,000 N/m) were obtained on the optimal monolith...

The 1H NMR metabolomics profiling of six edible mushrooms consumed in the northeastern highlands of Puebla, Mexico is presented. These fungi were morpho- and molecularly identified as Infundibulicybe squamulosa, Amanita jacksonii, Lepista nuda, Russula delica, Russula brevipes, and Lactarius indigo. The chemical profiling confirmed the presence of eight essential amino acids and their derivatives, six organic acids, six nucleosides, low amounts of reducing sugars, and valuable nutraceuticals such as betaine, carnitine, glycero-3-phosphocholine and O-acetylcarnitine which were differentially determined and quantified in the six mushrooms by qNMR...

By a reaction of trimethylphosphine with an open-[60]fullerene, corresponding dimers could be generated via two-fold deoxygenation processes even though the formation of β-oxo-phosphorous ylide is inevitable, a part of which is hydrolyzed to yield an α-methylene carbonyl derivative. Nevertheless, Wittig reaction and aldol condensation did not proceed well, indicating the presence of an unknown dimerization pathway. In the ylide formation, 1-phosphonium-3-carbabetaine was previously proposed as a key intermediate...

Three new pyridinium-phenolate dyes based on the benchmark solvatochromic dye Betaine 30 were synthesised. The dyes contained phenylene spacers between the donor and acceptor groups. Their UV-Vis absorption spectra were measured, with the dyes showing strong negative solvatochromic behaviour comparable to that of Betaine 30. These results stood in contrast to the behaviour of the π-extended dye Betaine 21, originally reported in 1963. This dye was synthesised and found to be significantly more solvatochromic than previously reported but prone to degrade...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review will discuss how the intake of specific protein sources (animal and vegetable) providing specific amino acids can modulate the gut microbiota composition and generate toxins. A better understanding of these interactions could lead to more appropriate dietary recommendations to improve gut health and mitigate the risk of complications promoted by the toxic metabolites formed by the gut microbiota. RECENT FINDINGS: Gut microbiota is vital in maintaining human health by influencing immune function and key metabolic pathways...

Low temperature is a type of abiotic stress affecting the tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ) growth. Understanding the mechanisms and utilization of exogenous substances underlying plant tolerance to cold stress would lay the foundation for improving temperature resilience in this important crop. Our study is aiming to investigate the effect of exogenous glycine betaine (GB) on tomato seedlings to increase tolerance to low temperatures. By treating tomato seedlings with exogenous GB under low temperature stress, we found that 30 mmol/L exogenous GB can significantly improve the cold tolerance of tomato seedlings...

In this study, we propose a drug delivery strategy that enables a high-concentration dosage for the pulmonary delivery of antibodies as an aerosolizable solid powder with desired stability. We utilized zwitterionic polymers for their promising properties as drug delivery vehicles and synthesized swellable, biodegradable poly(sulfo-betaine) (pSB) microparticles...

The bacterium Natranaerobius thermophilus is an extremely halophilic alkalithermophile that can thrive under conditions of high salinity (3.3-3.9 M Na+ ), alkaline pH (9.5), and elevated temperature (53°C). To understand the molecular mechanisms of salt adaptation in N. thermophilus , it is essential to investigate the protein, mRNA, and key metabolite levels on a molecular basis. Based on proteome profiling of N. thermophilus under 3.1, 3.7, and 4.3 M Na+ conditions compared to 2.5 M Na+ condition, we discovered that a hybrid strategy, combining the "compatible solute" and "salt-in" mechanisms, was utilized for osmotic adjustment dur ing the long-term salinity adaptation of N...

A novel cascade reaction initiated by an enantioselective aminocatalysed 1,3-dipolar [6+4] cycloaddition between catalytically generated trienamines and 3-oxidopyridinium betaines is presented. The [6+4] cycloadduct spontaneously undergoes an intramolecular enamine-mediated aldol, hydrolysis, and E1cb sequence, which ultimately affords a chiral hexahydroazulene framework. In this process, three new C-C bonds and three new stereocenters are formed, enabled by a formal unfolding of the pyridine moiety from the dipolar reagent...

Inorganic cesium lead bromide nanocrystals (CsPbBr3 NCs) hold promising prospects for high performance green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their exceptional color purity and high luminescence efficiency. However, the common ligands employed for passivating these indispensable NCs, such as long-chain organic ligands like oleic acid and oleylamine (OA/OAm), display highly dynamic binding and electronic insulating issues, thereby resulting in a low efficiency of the as-fabricated LEDs. Herein, we report a new zwitterionic short-branched alkyl sulfobetaine ligand, namely trioctyl(propyl-3-sulfonate) ammonium betaine (TOAB), to in situ passivate CsPbBr3 NCs via a feasible one-step solution synthesis, enabling efficiency improvement of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs...
