A tetrazole-naphthalene linker was used to prepare a nickel MOF (metal-organic framework) ( NiNDTz ) with interesting properties: a specific surface area S BET of 320 m2 g-1 ( S Langmuir 436 m2 g-1 ), high thermal stability (Tdonset = 300 °C), and CO2 uptake of 1.85 mmolg-1 , attributed to the tetrazole groups to be used as fillers in gas separation membranes. The role of these groups was crucial in the mechanical properties of mixed membranes prepared using polycarbonate as a polymer matrix, providing a very homogeneous filler distribution and also in the gas separation properties since a simultaneous increase in permeability and selectivity was achieved, especially in the hybrid membrane containing 20% filler ( PC@NiNDTz-20% )...

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remains a leading cause of mortality in Myanmar. Despite the burden, CVD preventive services receive low government and donor budgets, which has led to poor CVD outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a cost-effective analysis and a budget impact analysis on CVD prevention strategies recommended by the WHO. A Markov model was used to analyse the cost and quality-adjusted life year (QALY) from healthcare provider and societal perspectives...

BACKGROUND: e Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) bacteria that produce extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) is associated with a high prevalence of human illnesses worldwide. The emergence of resistance to carbapenem and colistin compounds poses further challenges to the treatment options for these illnesses. This study aimed to evaluate the phenotypic and genotypic pattern of resistance to carbapenem and colistin in ESBL-producing E. coli . Escherichia coli isolates collected from the respiratory tract of chickens in El-Sharkia government, Egypt...

BACKGROUND: Salmonella has become one of the hazards prevalent foodborne pathogens causing different diseases in chickens. However, Salmonella typhimurium (ST), a nonhost-specific serovar, is a major avian agent that causes severe disturbance in young chicken wellness. AIM: The occurrence of Salmonella in chickens and their antimicrobial resistance were explored in this study. In addition, the immune response of 1-day-old broiler chicks, against multidrug resistant (MDR) ST infection, was also assessed at 4 and 24 hours post infection (pi) in the cecum and spleen, representing their mucosal and systemic immune responses, respectively...

Hurricane María caused significant devastation on the island of Puerto Rico, impacting thousands of lives. Puerto Rican crisis migrant families faced stress related to displacement and relocation (cultural stress), often exhibited mental health symptoms, and experienced distress at the family level. Although cultural stress has been examined as an individual experience, little work has focused on the experience as a family. To address this gap, we conducted a mixed-methods study designed to examine the predictive effects of cultural stress on family conflict and its mental health implications among Puerto Rican Hurricane María parent and child dyads living on the U...

Free-living amoebae (FLA) of the genus Acanthamoeba are ubiquitous and amphizoic protozoa that colonize aquatic and terrestrial habitats and can serve as reservoirs for other microorganisms. They are considered econoses that can cause severe and rare pathologies. Due to limited epidemiological data available, the objective of this study was to investigate the presence of Acanthamoeba in coastal wetlands of the southeast of Buenos Aires province and evaluate their association with bacteriological and environmental variables...

Oil has been extracted from the Western Amazon since the 1920s, leading to severe environmental contamination due to frequent occurrence oil spills and the dumping of produced water. Local inhabitants, along with environmental and human rights organizations, have reported the adverse effects of oil-related pollution on their livelihoods and the ecosystems they depend on. Here, we study accumulation of oil-related heavy metals in wildlife, and its subsequent incorporation into the trophic chain. We analysed the concentration of 14 heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Hg, As, Ni, V, Ba, Se, Be, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Al) in liver samples from 78 lowland pacas (Cuniculus paca) hunted for subsistence in an oil-polluted area from the northern Peruvian Amazon where oil has been extracted since the 1970s (n = 38), and two control areas, the Yavari-Mirín River basin (n = 20), and the Pucacuro River basin (n = 20)...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remain controversial due to their high persistency and potential human toxicity. Although occupational exposure to PFAS has been widely investigated, the implications of PFAS occurrence in the general population remain to be unraveled. Considering that serum from most people contains PFAS, the aim of this study was to characterize the lipidomic profile in human serum from a general cohort (n = 40) with residual PFAS levels. The geometric means of ∑PFAS (11...

Caves and lava tubes on the Moon and Mars are sites of geological and astrobiological interest but consist of terrain that is inaccessible with traditional robot locomotion. To support the exploration of these sites, we present ReachBot, a robot that uses extendable booms as appendages to manipulate itself with respect to irregular rock surfaces. The booms terminate in grippers equipped with microspines and provide ReachBot with a large workspace, allowing it to achieve force closure in enclosed spaces, such as the walls of a lava tube...

IMPORTANCE: Hirsutism represents a significant concern for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), with deleterious psychological effects warranting acknowledgment and a clear imperative to provide effective management. To our knowledge, this is the first review to exclusively examine the effectiveness of laser and light-based therapies in addressing hirsutism in women with PCOS. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the existing literature regarding the effectiveness of laser and light hair reduction therapies, either as stand-alone treatments or in combination with systemic agents, in treating hirsutism for women with PCOS...

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, resulting in considerable economic losses. Its causal agent is foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), a picornavirus. Due to its error-prone replication and rapid evolution, the transmission and evolutionary dynamics of FMDV can be studied using genomic epidemiological approaches. To analyze FMDV evolution and identify possible transmission routes in an Argentinean region, field samples that tested positive for FMDV by PCR were obtained from 21 farms located in the Mar Chiquita district...

INTRODUCTION: Many women experience bleeding disorders that may have an anatomical or unexplained origin. Although hysterectomy is the most definitive and common treatment, it is highly invasive and resource-intensive. Less invasive therapies are therefore advised before hysterectomy for women with fibroids or bleeding disorders. This study has two aims related to treating bleeding disorders and uterine fibroids in the Netherlands: (1) to evaluate the regional variations in prevalence and surgical approaches; and (2) to assess the associations between regional rates of hysterectomies and less invasive surgical techniques to analyze whether hysterectomy can be replaced in routine practice...

Portable measurement systems using inertial sensors enable motion capture outside the lab, facilitating longitudinal and large-scale studies in natural environments. However, estimating 3D kinematics and kinetics from inertial data for a comprehensive biomechanical movement analysis is still challenging. Machine learning models or stepwise approaches performing Kalman filtering, inverse kinematics, and inverse dynamics can lead to inconsistencies between kinematics and kinetics. We investigated the reconstruction of 3D kinematics and kinetics of arbitrary running motions from inertial sensor data using optimal control simulations of full-body musculoskeletal models...

Parental feeding practices, such as the use of food to soothe, can be shaped by various factors, including the family environment and parents' psychological characteristics and capacities. To our knowledge, the combined effect of these factors has not been studied. Furthermore, parental feeding practices have mainly been studied in women, resulting in a gender gap in the research. This study aims to investigate the combined effect of family environment and parental characteristics on the likelihood of using food to soothe children, taking the gender of both parents into account...
