Carbon sequestration can be achieved by carbon dioxide replacement in natural gas hydrate exploitation, which reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing an effective solution to address climate change, while simultaneously protecting the environment and promoting sustainable energy development. Gas replacement can achieve gas exploitation, gas storage, and stability enhancement simultaneously. However, time-varying microstructure evolution of the hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS) during this process remain a large amount of uncertainty...

Maternal (F0 ) exposure to late-gestation heat stress reduces their daughter's (F1 ) mammary gland fat pad mass (FP), parenchyma (PAR) mass, and epithelial cell proliferation when evaluated at birth and weaning, and go on to produce less milk in their first lactation. Herein, we investigated the effect of maternal late-gestation heat stress on whole-body growth and mammary development of their granddaughters (F2 ). Multiparous F0 cows had access to heat abatement (n = 41, shade, and active cooling via fans and water soakers) or not (n = 41, shade only) for the last 56 d of gestation during a subtropical summer...

This study explored the effect of diverse coagulants (glucono-δ-lactone (GDL), gypsum (GYP), microbial transglutaminase (MTGase), and white vinegar (WVG)) on microstructure, quality, and digestion properties of tofu. The four kinds of tofu were significantly different in their structure, composition, and digestibility. Tofu coagulated with MTGase had the highest springiness and cohesiveness while GDL tofu had the highest enthalpy (6.54 J/g). However, the WVG and GYP groups outperformed others in terms of thermodynamic, and digestion properties...

BACKGROUND: Texture analysis extracts many quantitative image features, offering a valuable, cost-effective, and non-invasive approach for individual medicine. Furthermore, multimodal machine learning could have a large impact for precision medicine, as texture biomarkers can underlie tissue microstructure. This study aims to investigate imaging-based biomarkers of radio-induced neurotoxicity in pediatric patients with metastatic medulloblastoma, using radiomic and dosiomic analysis. METHODS: This single-center study retrospectively enrolled children diagnosed with metastatic medulloblastoma (MB) and treated with hyperfractionated craniospinal irradiation (CSI)...

A quantum chemistry (QC)/molecular dynamics (MD) scheme is developed to calculate electronic properties of semiconducting polymers in three steps: (i) constructing the polymer force field through a unified workflow, (ii) equilibrating polymer models, and (iii) calculating electronic structure properties (e.g., density of states and localization length) from the equilibrated models by QC approaches. Notably, as the second step of this scheme is generally the most time-consuming one, we introduce an alternative method to compute thermally averaged electronic properties in bulk, based on the simulation of a polymer chain in the solution of its repeat units, which is shown to reproduce the microstructure of polymer chains and their electrostatic effect (successfully tested for five benchmark polymers) 10 times faster than state-of-the-art methods...

Alcohol use disorder is a substantial social and economic burden. During the last years, the number of women with drinking problems has been increasing, and one main concern is that they are particularly more vulnerable to negative consequences of alcohol. However, little is known about female-specific response patterns for alcohol, and potential underlying differences in brain mechanisms, including for compulsion-like alcohol drinking (when intake persists despite adverse consequences). We used lickometry to assess behavioral microstructure in adult Wistar male and female rats (n = 28-30) during alcohol-only drinking or moderate- or higher-challenge alcohol compulsion (10 or 60 mg/L quinine in alcohol, respectively)...

The adversities of cadmium (Cd) contamination are quite distinguished among other heavy metals (HMs), and so is the efficacy of zinc (Zn) nutrition in mitigating Cd toxicity. Rice (Oryza sativa) crop, known for its ability to absorb HMs, inadvertently facilitates the bioaccumulation of Cd, posing a significant risk to both the plant itself and to humans consuming its edible parts, and damaging the environment as well. The use of nanoparticles, such as nano-zinc oxide (nZnO), to improve the nutritional quality of crops and their counteractive implications against HMs, have gained substantial attention among scientists and farmers...

According to the assaying data, CH might both increase the amount of lactic acid bacteria by 2.62 % and shorten the fermentation period by at least 3 h, subsequently leading to enhanced degradation of carbohydrate and protein, accompanied by a softer texture...

Restructured foods are a blend of various ingredients that are dried or fried to obtain a ready-to-eat product. Several frying techniques have been employed viz., deep fat, microwave, vacuum, air, and spray frying. Deep-fat frying is the most common technique used for products that have improved texture and sensory characteristics. It facilitates various transformations that include starch gelatinization, protein denaturation, nutrient loss, non-enzymatic browning, lipid oxidation, etc. This physicochemical change alters both the product and the fried oil quality...

The effects of ultrasonic pretreatment on the drying characteristics and microstructure of strawberry slices were investigated. The rehydration characteristics of freeze-dried products, which were pre-frozen at -20 °C and - 80 °C were explored, with a focus on water mobility and distribution. The ultrasonic pretreatment significantly increased the water mobility of the strawberry slices, resulting in a reduction in their water content. However, the application of ultrasound significantly decreased the rehydration speed, indicating a lower moisture absorption capacity in the pretreated sample...

Gelatin (GL) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are common natural components for edible films, but their water barrier performance are finite as hydrophilic polymers. In this study, a GL/CMC water barrier film was prepared, characterized and applied. The microstructure results showed that complex coacervation at pH 2.0 and cross-linking effect of sodium benzoate resulted in strong interaction forces and dense structure of this film. Compared with pure GL or CMC film, this novel composite film decreased water vapor permeability by approximately 90%, and possessed applicable water solubility (51...

Compared with the conventional freeze-thaw treatment (CFT), the effect of magnetic field-assisted freeze-thaw treatment (MFT) on the storage quality of foxtail millet sourdough and steamed bread is explored. The results showed that compared with CFT, MFT shortened the phase transition time of dough; decreased the water loss rate, the water mobility, and the freezable water content; increased the fermentation volume; stabilized the rheological properties; and minimized the damage of freezing and thawing to the secondary structure and microstructure of the gluten...

Unified multimodal methods [Resting state connectivity analysis, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and cortical thickness analysis] were employed to test the hypothesis that the impact of cigarette smoking on the balance among these networks is due to alterations in white matter connectivity, microstructural architecture, functional connectivity and cortical thickness (CT) and that these metrics define fundamental differences between people who smoke and nonsmokers...
