BACKGROUND: Limited data have reported the outcomes of percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in patients with unilateral absence of pulmonary artery (UAPA). This study aimed to evaluate the symptomatology, diagnosis and therapy, especially the transcatheter closure of PDA in patients with PDA associated with UAPA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PDA and UAPA were retrospectively enrolled from August 2010 through January 2016. Clinical data, treatment and follow-up information were evaluated...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and the maternal/neonatal risk factors at a tertiary care hospital in Oman, compared to other countries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of premature neonates born with gestational age (GA) 24-32 weeks at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman, from January 2007 to December 2010. Maternal and neonatal in-hospital course was retrieved. The incidence of ROP was reported...

OBJECTIVES: to define the pattern of fetal echocardiographic changes associated with isolated pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) and to correlate the echocardiographic findings with the neonatal outcome and the need of postnatal pulmonary valvuloplasty within the first 12 months of life. METHODS: a prospective cohort study was designed on 16 fetuses with isolated PS and 48 controls matched by gestational age at scan (+/- 2 weeks). Fetal standard ultrasound and comprehensive echocardiography, which included cardiovascular morphometric parameters, systolic and diastolic functional and timing-measurements, were performed in all cases...

Major depressive disorder is common during antenatal period and many women are prescribed antidepressant drugs despite no antidepressant can be regarded as definitely safe in pregnancy. Previous studies have suggested links between gestational use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) or serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) and certain birth defects. VACTERL association is a rare group of congenital malformations which were observed to occur together more often than would be expected by chance...

The present case exemplified the detrimental traits of prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Propionibacterium acnes. As a baby, the patient had a congenital cardiac defect with truncus arteriosus type I with interrupted aortic arch and open ductus Botalli, and had undergone several operations. However, at 18 months after a Bentall procedure performed 29 years later he presented with major prosthetic dehiscence due to endocarditis. The patient underwent a high-risk reoperation for a re-do Bentall procedure and was treated postoperatively with intravenous antibiotics consisting of vancomycin for five weeks and penicillin and rifampicin each for six weeks...

Background Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common complication of prematurity and a risk factor for poor outcome. Infants undergoing surgical PDA ligation are at highest risk for neurodevelopmental injury. Autonomic dysfunction has been described in premature infants with PDA. Aim To interrogate the autonomic nervous system by analysis of advanced heart rate variability (HRV) metrics before and after surgical closure of the PDA. Study Design Prospective, observational study. Subjects Twenty-seven infants born before 28 weeks' gestation were included in this study...

We report a critically ill premature infant with severe mitral valve regurgitation associated with pulmonary hypertension and a severely dilated left atrium from a large patent ductus arteriosus. The mitral valve regurgitation improved significantly with normalisation of left atrial size 4 weeks after percutaneous closure of the patent ductus arteriosus. This case highlights the potential reversibility of severe mitral valve regurgitation with treatment of an underlying cardiac shunt.

Importance: Observational studies have associated patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation among preterm infants with adverse neonatal outcomes and neurodevelopmental impairment in early childhood, with a resultant secular trend away from surgical treatment. However, to our knowledge, studies have inadequately addressed sources of residual bias, including survival bias and major neonatal morbidities arising before exposure to ligation. Objective: Evaluate the association between PDA ligation vs medical management and neonatal and neurodevelopmental outcomes...

A 15-day-old premature patient with ventricular septal defect and interrupted aortic arch type B underwent "hybrid" initial treatment consisting of bilateral pulmonary artery banding followed by stenting of the ductus arteriosus. A pre-registered CT scan was re-purposed with a new three-dimensional image fusion software (VesselNavigator) to create a roadmap for stent delivery.

AIM: The aim of the study was to analyze the role of specific risk factors affecting the development and clinical course of BPD in infants born before 32 weeks of gestation with a birth weight ≤ 1500g. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 222 infants born and hospitalized at the Department of Neonatology, Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital-Research Institute. At their 28-th day of life, the patients were divided into two groups: with and without BPD. The grade of BPD severity was determined at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age...

OBJECTIVES: The study purpose is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the ADO II device for closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in children. BACKGROUND: Transcatheter treatment of PDA has been evolving for 40+ years and is the treatment of choice. The AMPLATZER™ Duct Occluder (ADO) device was developed for larger diameter ducts and is not ideal in all PDAs. ADO II was developed for small to moderate-sized ducts. METHODS: This is a single-arm, multicenter study evaluating safety and efficacy of the ADO II device...

BACKGROUND: Sustained volume load due to a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) leads to cardiac remodeling. Remodeling changes can become pathological and are associated with cardiovascular disease progression. Data on remodeling changes in preterm infants is not available. METHODS: Clinical and echocardiography data were collected in preterm infants <30 weeks gestation on postnatal day 3 and then every 7-14 days until closure of the ductus arteriosus. Images were analyzed using conventional techniques and speckle tracking...

We studied the safety and efficacy of closing patent ductus arteriosus by Nit-Occlud coils via retrograde approach. This is a retrospective study of 46 attempts to close ducts by this method in two hospitals in Egypt and Iran. Ductus arteriosus was crossed by left or right Judkins or endhole catheters. The coil was delivered via the same catheter or the provided endhole catheter after exchange. The procedure was successful in 42 out of 46 attempts. Fluoroscopy and procedural times were significantly shorter when the catheter was not exchanged...

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to assess the detection of congenital cardiovascular anomalies (congenital heart disease) in neonates and infants using model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) algorithm compared with hybrid iterative reconstruction (HIR) and filtered back projection (FBP) reconstructions on axial computed tomography (CT) performed at minimum scanner dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over 1 year, all CT angiographies performed in infants below 3 months of age with congenital heart disease were assessed retrospectively...

As a ubiquitous signaling molecule, nitric oxide (NO) exerts various important effects on the cardiovascular system and is involved in the regulation of vascular tone and myocardial metabolism in vertebrates. Lungfishes are closely related to tetrapods and provide an interesting possibility to understand the transition from water to land. Lungfishes are endowed with both systemic and pulmonary circulations, and their incompletely divided ventricle allows for blood to bypass either circuit. Lungfishes inhabit ephemeral waterbodies that may enforce prolonged aestivation during drought, throughout which nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression is upregulated...
