OBJECTIVES: The incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorder remains high in sonography. The aims of this study are to determine the changes in muscle stiffness with different arm abduction angles, and to investigate the effect of cushion support on reducing muscle load in the supraspinatus when sonographers scan with the arm abducted to different angles. METHODS: This is a prospective crossover study. Twenty-three healthy female subjects aged between 20 and 23 years were included...

BACKGROUND: The grading of urinary tract dilatation (UTD) on postnatal sonography is a fundamental step to establish rational management for infants with antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH). The aim of this study was to compare the prediction accuracy of UTD grading systems for relevant clinical outcomes. In addition, we propose a refinement of the UTD classification by adding quantitative measurements and evaluate its impact on accuracy. METHODS: Between 1989 and 2019, 447 infants diagnosed with isolated AHN were prospectively followed...

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valves (PUVs) constitute the most common infravesical urinary obstruction in boys and are often accompanied by severe consequences to the lower and upper urinary tract. Currently, about two-thirds of diagnosis of PUVs has been suspected by prenatal ultrasonography findings. The aim of this study was to compare long-term clinical outcomes in two groups of patients with PUVs, with antenatal vs. postnatal diagnosis. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of 173 patients with PUVs systematically followed up in a tertiary center...

Termination of pregnancy is indicated for Serratia marcescens bacteremia, a major cause of mortality. Our present case was highly challenging because the patient wished to continue with her pregnancy, and the ultrasonography showed features of a placental abscess. Although the outcomes were good after prolonged antibiotic treatment, this was an exceptional case.

Epidermoid cysts, though having a variable sonographic appearance, may present with an onion peel configuration, that is, concentric rings of alternating hyperechogenicities and hypoechogenicities. The absence of vascular flow on colour Doppler sonography is also consistent with the avascular nature of these lesions. By combining these two sonographic features and the absence of biochemical tumour marker, preoperative diagnosis of epidermoid cyst is possible and may prompt a testis sparing surgery rather than orchidectomy...

Leiomyomas are benign neoplasms that may arise from any structure or organ containing smooth muscle. The majority of genitourinary leimyomas are found in the renal capsule, but this tumor has also been reported in the epididymis, spermatic cord, and tunica albuginea. Sonography is the imaging modality of choice for evaluating intrascrotal pathology, but the sonographic appearance of leiomyomas arising from the tunica albuginea have rarely been reported. We report a case of such a leiomyoma that was diagnosed sonographically...

Although congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare benign congenital renal tumor, it is the most common solid renal tumor in the newborn period. The most common presentation of congenital mesoblastic nephroma is polyhydramnios, and only one case with prenatal fetal hydrops has been previously reported. Prenatal diagnosis of CMN has previously been made on the basis of the findings of sonography in the third trimester, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based diagnosis has been reported recently. Here we report a case of prenatally diagnosed classical type CMN diagnosed at 22 + 3 weeks of gestation based on the findings of sonography and magnetic resonance imaging...

MULTICENTER STUDY

OBJECTIVES: Oestrogens are widely believed to be effective against postmenopausal osteoporosis. However there are some outstanding questions which still need an answer. For example, the minimal effective dose regimen of oestradiol needs to be established and the relationship between oestradiol levels and efficacy on bone turnover and bone mass needs to be further clarified. METHODS: Menorest is being tested in the prevention of postmenopausal bone loss. A phase II/III clinical program, that includes two double blind, dose-ranging, placebo-controlled, parallel group, 2-year studies, has started in 58 centers in Europe and South Africa...

In 118 successive infertile women (aged 22-40 years, median 30 years) with longstanding infertility from our infertility clinic we performed an endocrinological (TRH-test, TT3, TT4, TBG, antibodies) as well as a morphological thyroid examination (sonography and 99mTc-scintigraphy. The same endocrinological investigations except TRH-test and a thyroid sonography was performed in the control group (50 fertile women, aged 24-39 years, median 33 years). Two patients were hyperthyroid and one patient had primary hypothyroidism...

Immunogenic hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease) is a life-long ailment. A widespread diagnostic evaluation is essential for unbiased initial values prior to therapy. The major goals of initial investigation are to determine a functional disturbance of the organ, its pathogenesis and morphology. Even a suppressed ultrasensitive bTSH value represents no evidence of overt hyperthyroidism; a positive diagnosis can only be established by the additional presence of increased parameters of circulating free thyroid hormones (fT3, fT4)...
