INTRODUCTION: Enterococci are important hospital-acquired pathogens. The most commonly isolated species of the genus, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are the third to fourth-most prevalent nosocomial pathogens worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of resistance to vancomycin and other antimicrobial agents of Enterococcus spp strains isolated from blood cultures of hospitalized patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During the three-year period, from 2008 to 2010, 132 strains of Enterococcus spp isolated from blood cultures of hospitalized patients were tested for their susceptibility to ampicillin, vancomycin, gentamycin (high-level resistance), erythromycin, chloramphenicol, teicoplanin, ciprofloxacin by disc diffusion method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute recommendations...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of leflunomide, intravenous immunoglobulins, and ciprofloxacin as active treatment of postrenal transplant BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) in graft outcome at 1 year. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Renal transplant recipients with positive results of 2 BK virus polymerase chain reaction tests of urine and blood underwent graft biopsy to confirm BKVN. If BKVN was diagnosed, antimetabolite therapy (mycophenolate mofetil or azathioprine) was changed to leflunomide therapy accompanied by a course of immunoglobulin and oral ciproflxacin...

The method of simultaneous determination of ofloxacin (OFLX), ciproflxacin (CPLX), and sparfloxacin (SPLX) by thin-layer chromatography is established, with micelle solutions as mobile phases. It is found that the optimum molar ratio of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid is 0.01:0.1. On the polyamide thin-layer sheet, OFLX, CPLX, and SPLX are separated from each other, and the corresponding Rf values are 0.72, 0.55, and 0.32, respectively. The fluorescence spots are scanned with a spectrodensitometer at the excitation wavelength of 282 nm...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
N Miyashita, Y Niki, T Matsushima
The in vitro and in vivo antichlamydial activity of sitafloxacin was investigated. The MICs and minimal chlamydiacidal concentrations of sitafloxacin for various species of chlamydia ranged from 0.031 to 0.125 microg/ml. Sitafloxacin had an excellent therapeutic effect on experimental Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia and was more potent than tosufloxacin, ofloxacin, and ciproflxacin, although slightly less potent than sparfloxacin.
