BACKGROUND: Currently, surgical site infection surveillance relies on labor-intensive manual chart review. Recently suggested solutions involve machine learning to identify surgical site infections directly from the medical record. Deep learning is a form of machine learning that has historically performed better than traditional methods while being harder to interpret. We propose a deep learning model, a long short-term memory network, for the identification of surgical site infection from the medical record with an attention layer for explainability...

Locoregional radiotherapy play an important role in controlling the disease after surgery in patients with breast cancer. Radiotherapy schedules vary from conventional fraction to hypofractionation. The purpose of this review is to get an insight into the data on regional nodal irradiation (RNI) with hypofractionation in patients with breast cancer. This systematic review was constructed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) framework. Electronic databases such as PubMed, Cochrane and EMBASE were searched from January 1, 2023 to March 31, 2023 to identify studies published in English language on hypofractionated RNI in post mastectomy patients...

PURPOSE: Accurately locating and analysing surgical instruments in laparoscopic surgical videos can assist doctors in postoperative quality assessment. This can provide patients with more scientific and rational solutions for healing surgical complications. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end algorithm for the detection of surgical instruments. METHODS: Dual-Branched Head (DBH) and Overall Intersection over Union Loss (OIoU Loss) are introduced to solve the problem of inaccurate surgical instrument detection, both in terms of localization and classification...

Both bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and abaloparatide are used to promote bone formation. However, there is no consensus about their optimal administration. We investigated the optimal administration theory for the pairing of BMP-2 and abaloparatide in a rat spinal fusion model. Group I was only implanted in carriers and saline. Carriers with 3 µg of recombinant human BMP-2 (rhBMP-2) were implanted in other groups. Abaloparatide injections were administered three times a week for group III (for a total amount of 120 µg/kg in a week) and six times a week for group IV (for a total amount of 120 µg/kg in a week) after surgery...

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spine disease is a leading cause of pain and disability. Degenerative conditions of the spine can result in neurologic compression of the cervical spinal cord or nerve roots and may be surgically treated with an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in up to 137,000 people per year in the United States. A common sequelae of ACDF is reduced cervical range of motion (CROM) with patient-based complaints of stiffness and neck pain. Currently, tools for assessment of CROM are manual, subjective, and only intermittently utilized during doctor or physical therapy visits...

BACKGROUND: Constipation is prevalent worldwide, significantly increasing healthcare costs and diminishing the quality of life in children affected. Current studies have yielded mixed results regarding the factors associated with constipation, and mainly focusing on patients outside of Asia. Moreover, most of these studies lack focus on the paediatric population. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and associated factors of constipation among children in Asia. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane for cohort and cross-sectional studies published from database inception up to October 12, 2022, and continued with manual searching until September 2, 2023...

Emergency hemorrhoidectomy for strangulated internal hemorrhoids should be avoided when possible. Manual reductions can relieve pain and prevent the need for emergency surgery. Herein, we present a 51-year-old female patient. Over the preceding 20 years, she experienced prolapsed internal hemorrhoids every time she defecated and had been performing manual reductions herself. Due to significant pain and difficulty during the manual reduction of the hemorrhoids, she was transported to the emergency room. Anal inspection revealed prolapsed internal hemorrhoids and partial congestion...

Robotic assisted (RA) total hip arthroplasty (THA) offers improved acetabular component placement and radiographic outcomes, but inconsistent assessment methods of its learning curves render the evaluation of adopting novel platforms challenging. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to assess the learning curve associated with RA-THA, both tracking a surgeon's performance across initial cases and comparing their performance to manual THA (M-THA). PubMed, MEDLINE, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar were searched on June 16, 2023, to identify studies published between January 1, 2000 and June 16, 2023 (PROSPERO registration: CRD42023437339)...
