The patient was a 33-year-old man attending the infertility clinic with primary infertility of 3 years duration. The semen examination showed oligozoospermia and suspected primary male infertility. He had a history of chronic sinusitis and respiratory disease. His chest X-ray showed dextrocardia. Abnormality of the ultrastructure of the cilia of the tract epithelium was found by electron microscopy, and further examination revealed bronchoectasis. We gave him a diagnosis of Kartagener syndrome from these findings...

AIM: To analyze the systemic manifestations of vascular endothelial damage, the activation of hemostatic and inflammatory responses in patients with an infectious inflammation-dependent exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The paper provides the data of examinations of 111 patients with the clinical signs of an infectious inflammation-dependent exacerbation of COPD who had 2 or 3 positive criteria elaborated by N. The review is devoted to non-antibacterial effects of macrolides in patients with respiratory diseases: bronchial asthma, bronchoectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic rhinosinusitis, mucoviscidosis, diffuse bronchiolithiasis, severe flu, posttransplantation obliterating bronchiositis. The discussion covers mechanisms of an immunomodulating action of macrolides. Current data base on non-antibacterial effects of macrolides is analysed.

The balance between CD4(+) T helper (Th1) lymphocytes producing interferon-gamma or Interleukin-4 (Th2) in the lungs may vary among diseases and during the progression of interstitial pneumonia (IP). Both idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and collagen vascular diseases (CVD) are associated with IP, but the clinical course and the response to treatment are different. Since Th1 or Th2 modulating drugs have been proven to alter the lymphocyte balance in vitro, it is important to elucidate the Th1/Th2 profile in patients with active IP...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical findings of patients with a solitary pulmonary nodule in Japan caused by pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease. METHODS: The authors investigated the clinical features of 12 patients diagnosed as having pulmonary MAC disease who had presented with a solitary pulmonary nodule. RESULTS: The causative microorganisms were M. avium in seven patients, Mycobacterium intracellulare in two and MAC in three...

The phases of the nitrogen washout curve (NWC): dead space phase (DSP), mixed phase (MP), alveolar phase (AP) and lung closing volume (LCV) were studied in 7 healthy subjects and 47 patients with diverse disorders of gas mixing in the lungs. Under conditions of a diffuse decrease in the elasticity induced by blood congestion consequent on mitral heart disease, the gas in uniformly mixed in the lungs so that the magnitudes of NWC phases (in % of ZCV) almost do not differ from normal. When ZCV was drastically decreased, DSP showed a relative augmentation, while AP fell down...

There have been examined 145 patients with hemoptyses and normal x-ray findings. The majority of patients were males, smokers, more than 45 years old. Bronchoscopically the most common findings have been signs of inflammation and blood traces. The most common cause of hemoptyses has been chronic bronchitis in patients older than 45 years, and bronchoectasis in younger patients. Bronchogenous carcinoma was discovered in 8 patients: in 5 by bronchoscopic examination at hemoptysis occurence and in 3 by subsequent follow up after 8, 15 and 20 months...

The sensory and motor deficits of the CNS are varied, depending on the etiologic factors and the structures involved. Nevertheless, the clinical picture is predictable, provided one has an adequate knowledge of the neuroanatomy and the functions of the different fiber tracts, nuclei, and other specific regions of the brain and spinal cord. The purpose of this section is to provide an overall view of the sensory and motor deficits of the CNS, which will enable the clinician to treat these patients in a more objective and effective manner...
