OBJECTIVE: The mechanism through which platelet activating factor (PAF) induces cardiac electrical activity and arrhythmia is not well understood and previous studies have suggested a potential involvement of ion channels in its action. The present study was aimed to clarify the role of PAF in fatal arrhythmias following acute myocardia infarction (AMI) and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: (1) Blood PAF levels were measured among 72 AMI patients at the time of diagnosis with AMI and 48 h later, and their electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded continuously...

The aim of this study was to detect early changes (within 1-4 h) in the brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels of rats with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). A total of 35 Wistar rats were established as models of AMI and 30 sham-operated rats were used as the control group. The myocardia of the two groups were observed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) prior to and following surgery. A double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the serum BNP and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) concentrations before and 1-4 h after surgery...

Angelica and ChuanXiong are used to cure ischemic heart disease in China. Previous studies found that these two herbs could increase myocardial blood flow, oxygen-supply and keep myocardial oxygen balance, etc. However, the mechanisms of angiogenic effects of these two herbs are not well-known. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of Angelica and ChuanXiong on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in rat myocardial infarction, on endothelial cell proliferation and quantity of vessels on chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM)...

OBJECTIVE: It was recently demonstrated that the radiolabeled C2A domain of synaptotagmin I accumulates avidly in the area at risk after ischemia and reperfusion. The objective was to quantitatively characterize the dynamic uptake of radiolabeled C2A in normal and ischemically injured myocardia using a compartmental model. METHODS: To induce acute myocardial infarction, the left descending coronary artery was ligated for 18 min, followed by reperfusion. [99mTc]C2A-GST or its inactivated form, [99mTc]C2A-GST-NHS, was injected intravenously at 2 h after reperfusion...

Intermedin is a novel member of the calcitonin/calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) family peptide, which has vasodilatory and hypotensive actions identical to those of adrenomedullin and CGRP. Cleavage sites located between 2 basic amino acids at Arg93-Arg94 result in the production of prepro-intermedin95-147, namely intermedin1-53. The bioactive action of intermedin1-53 and its physiological significance are unclear. In this work, we aimed to explore the effects of intermedin1-53 on acute myocardial injury induced by isoproterenol...

BACKGROUND: It has become apparent recently that cardiac myocytes can divide after myocardial infarction, a circumstance that challenges the orthodox view that myocytes may be terminally differentiated. Replacement of the necrosed heart tissue by newly regenerated functional myocardium is a therapeutic ideal, but attempts to reconstitute functional myocardia and coronary vessels have been less successful. METHODS: We isolated a fraction containing 5 compounds from the Chinese herb Geum japonicum, which stimulates the processes of angiogenesis and cardiomyogenesis...

Clinical use of cardiac computed tomography is rapidly expanding, and its purpose may reach beyond noninvasive coronary angiography. We investigated the ability of 64-slice multidetector computed tomography to differentiate between recent and long-standing myocardial infarction (MI). Contrast-enhanced coronary computed tomographic (CT) scans (Siemens Sensation 64) of patients with a recent MI (< 7 days, n = 16), long-standing MI (> 12 months, n = 13), and no MI (n = 13) were retrospectively evaluated...

BACKGROUND: Although a left ventricular assist device is often used to provide circulatory support until transplantation in severe heart failure, the mortality of long-term use of left ventricular assist devices remains high. We have shown that hepatocyte growth factor causes angiogenesis, antifibrosis, and antiapoptosis in the myocardium. Therefore, gene therapy with hepatocyte growth factor-complementary DNA plasmids may enhance the chance of "bridge to recovery." In this study, we performed gene therapy with hepatocyte growth factor in the impaired goat heart with a left ventricular assist device...

This review describes the temporal changes of high-energy phosphate metabolites during the cardiac cycle. Under baseline condition, the extent of cyclical changes ("cycling") of ATP, phosphocreatine and inorganic phosphate varies between 10-15%. Such energy oscillations are not augmented under various forms of metabolic stress including 1) inotropic stimulation, 2) acute hypoxia and 3) failing, chronically infarcted hearts. Thus, the concentrations of high-energy phosphates over the cardiac cycle are a tightly regulated entity, even when energetic needs are substantially augmented...

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prognostic significance of reperfusion assessment by Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow grade in the infarct related artery and ST-segment resolution analysis, by correlating with clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). BACKGROUND: Angiographic assessment, based on epicardial coronary anatomy, has been considered the "gold standard" for reperfusion. The electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring provides a noninvasive, real-time physiologic marker of cellular reperfusion and may better predict clinical outcomes...

OBJECTIVES AND BACKGROUND: While attention has focused on coronary blood flow in the culprit artery in acute myocardia infarction (MI), flow in the nonculprit artery has not been studied widely, in part because it has been assumed to be normal. We hypothesized that slower flow in culprit arteries, larger territories infarcted and hemodynamic perturbations may be associated with slow flow in nonculprit arteries. METHODS: The number of frames for dye to first reach distal landmarks (corrected TIMI [Thrombolysis in Acute Myocardial Infarction] frame count [CTFC]) were counted in 1,817 nonculprit arteries from the TIMI 4, 10A, 10B and 14 thrombolytic trials...

Myocardia infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death in elderly adults. For those elderly who do recover, results are less than optimal when compared to those seen with younger patients. With a shortened length of stay in hospitals for elderly MI patients, and an increase in life expectancy that leads to an estimated 33 million elders in the U.S. population, there is a growing community-based population of elders who are recovering from MI. The use of elders as peer advisors has been demonstrated to be a cost-effective method of promoting health and enhancing recovery, with only a modest investment of the professional healthcare provider's time and money...

BACKGROUND: Myocardium undergoes complex cellular and histochemical alterations after acute myocardial infarction. These structural changes directly affect the mechanical stiffness of infarcted and remote myocardia. Previous investigations of infarct stiffness have been limited to uniaxial testing, which does not provide a unique description of the tissue's three-dimensional material properties. This study describes the first serial measurements of biaxial mechanical properties of sheep myocardium after anteroapical infarction...

Myocardial injuries are often misknown because of hard diagnosis. After presenting two clinical cases, this paper concerns clinical and biological criteria used to prove post-traumatic myocardial injury. Increased serum level of M.B. fractions of C.P.K. associated with typical electrocardiographic aspect is enough; other investigations are less specific and may be hasardous to attempt. Prognosis and therapy are close to acute myocardia infarction.
