BACKGROUND: A traumatic arteriovenous fistula of the scalp due to hair transplantation (AVFHT) is a rare fistulous communication between branches of the arteries and draining veins in the scalp's subcutaneous tissue. Its incidence is unknown and its clinical manifestations may range from a pulsatile mass to seldom epilepsy. Surgery and interventional approaches (percutaneous and endovascular embolization) using coils and embolic agents such as Onyx have been used as treatment options...

The term amyloidosis describes a group of diseases caused by the fibrillar deposit of poorly folded proteins in tissues with a secondary alteration of their function. Diffuse parenchymal lung disease associated with amyloidosis is rare and is most often diagnosed in autopsy. A 45-year-old male patient presented an acute episode of cough with mucoid expectoration. He had also dyspnea, dry cough, chest pain, and constitutional symptoms of 6 months of evolution. Initially the case was treated as acute pneumonia...

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous peoples' food systems have weakened as a result of pressures exerted by agro-commercial policies and chains, which has led to the dependency and deterioration of their ways of life. It is in this context that the construction of perspectives on food autonomy positions itself as a potential and strategic field of social decolonial mobilization for indigenous peoples' health and buen vivir . OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the meanings of food autonomy from the perspectives of a Nasa Indigenous community in Colombia...

BACKGROUND: Stab wounds (SW) to the thorax raises suspicion for cardiac injuries; however, the topographic description is variable. The present study aims to evaluate different topographical descriptions within the thorax and establish their diagnostic value in penetrating cardiac trauma by SW. METHODS: Medical records of all patients admitted to our center with thoracic SW from January 2013 to June 2016 were included in this study. Diagnostic value potential was measured using different areas of the thorax described in the literature...

In this work, a detailed study of structural, electrical and magnetic characterization of (GaMn)Sb diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is presented. (GaMn)Sb thin films were grown by DC magnetron co-sputtering method as an innovative procedure to fabricate III-V DMS. The presence of unusual Mn2Sb2 and Mn2Sb secondary phases, induced by substrate temperature and deposition time, were revealed through XRD measurements. Magnetization measurements allow determining crossover between a paramagnetic-like to a ferromagnetic-like behavior controlled by secondary phases...

Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus are mosquito vectors for several tropical diseases that represent a current public health problem. The ecological requirements for each species are different, however, both species show high biological adaptability, which promotes their coexistence in the same breeding sites. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of larval association between Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus under different laboratory conditions of food supply and temperature, and under field simulated conditions like peridomestic containers...

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a relatively frequent situation in the natural history of colorectal cancer and is associated with a dismal prognosis. Promising results have been shown after radical cytoreduction followed by intraperitoneal chemohyperthermic perfusion. The aim our study was to assess the outcomes after treating patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of colonic origin by means of cytoreductive surgery and intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) followed by early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC)...
