Primary angle closure disease (PACD) is a major cause of blindness worldwide. It has a high prevalence in East Asia, especially in China, which leads to a higher incidence of blindness than open-angle glaucoma. The aim of this study was to directly observe the circumlental space (CLS) in laser peripheral iridotomized eyes with PACD and to determine whether this structure plays a role in the pathogenesis of PACD. Fifty eyes of 50 patients with PACD, who had received laser peripheral iridotomy performed with neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet were recruited from glaucoma clinics from March 2021 to May 2022, including 17 primary angle closure suspect (PACS), 16 primary angle closure (PAC) and 17 primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG)...

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between the opening and closing states of anterior chamber angle (ACA) and the density of limbal epithelial basal cells (LEBCs) in subjects with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. METHODS: A total of 54 eyes of 29 patients diagnosed with PACG were included in the study. 54 eyes from normal subjects were included as control. Automatic evaluation system for ultrasound biomicroscopy images of anterior chamber angle was used to assist ophthalmologists in identifying the opening or closing state of ACA, and the in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) was used to evaluate the density of LEBCs in different directions...

Objective: To analyze the early changes in vault height and its influencing factors after implantation of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (pIOL). Methods: A retrospective case series study was conducted, including patients who underwent pIOL implantation at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, from September 2020 to August 2021, and completed a 3-month follow-up. Data were collected from myopic or myopic astigmatism patients. Preoperative ocular examinations, including Pentacam anterior segment analysis system, Sirius anterior segment analysis system, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and IOLMaster optical biometry, were performed to measure parameters such as refractive power, corneal curvature, corneal horizontal diameter, anterior chamber volume, anterior chamber depth, pupil diameter, sulcus-to-sulcus diameter (STS), and lens thickness...

To present a modified technique for the reconstruction of a large cyclodialysis cleft with capsular tension ring (CTR) and continuous and cerclage sutures without scleral flaps in 12 cases. The mean visual acuity was 0.75 ± 0.47 logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution (logMAR), and the average intraocular pressure (IOP) was 3.35 ± 0.41 mmHg before surgery. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) revealed a ciliary cleft of 4.3 ± 3.5 clock hours. We performed the modified technique for the reconstruction of a large cyclodialysis cleft...

BACKGROUND: The structural features have an impact on the surgical prognosis for congenital corneal opacity (CCO). The structural classification system of CCO, however, is lacking. Based on data from ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) findings in infants and toddlers with CCO, this research proposed a classification system for the anterior segment structure severity. METHODS: Medical records, preoperative UBM images and slit-lamp photographs of infants and toddlers diagnosed with CCO at University Third Hospital between December 2018 and June 2022 were reviewed...

Anterior segment tumours of the eye are relatively rare but can pose significant morbidity and mortality. We conducted a literature review to compare the performance of ultrasound biomicroscopy to anterior segment optical coherence tomography in the imaging of these tumours. A total of seven studies were included accounting for a cumulative 1,114 eyes. Ultrasound biomicroscopy has traditionally formed, and remains, the mainstay of tumour imaging due to its ability to penetrate pigmented lesions and delineate the posterior border of tumours, and the current evidence supports this...

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is an invaluable investigation for imaging anterior segment structures. Although it is operator-dependent and time consuming, unlike optical-based imaging techniques, it is able to image structures posterior to the iris, such as the zonules, ciliary body and part of the pars plana. It is especially useful in advanced cataracts, traumatic cataracts, subluxed lenses, posterior polar cataracts, and congenital and developmental anomalies affecting the anterior segment. It provides diagnostic information in eyes with complex cataracts or intraocular lens (IOL)-related pathology, and aids in surgical planning in order to minimise complications...

This case report presents a family with developmental glaucoma accompanied by microcornea resulting from novel mutations in the ADAMTS18 gene. The index case involves a 5-year-old twin brother, who, during a routine examination, exhibited elevated intraocular pressure persisting for over a month. The peak intraocular pressure reached approximately 25 mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa) in both eyes, with a corneal diameter of less than 10 mm. Ocular examination revealed an enlarged cup-to-disc ratio, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) demonstrated thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell layer...

We describe a rare case of Soemmering's ring-induced uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema (UGH) syndrome, caused by an undisplaced, in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) 16 years after implantation. The presenting symptoms were recurrent episodes of transient monocular vision loss, which prompted extensive unremarkable investigations. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) eventually revealed an enlarging Soemmering's ring contacting the posterior iris and causing UGH syndrome. This is a unique case because the IOL haptics remained in the bag...

Plateau iris syndrome (PIS) was first coined in 1958 to describe the iris configuration of a patient, 2 years later; the concept of plateau iris was published. In 1992, the anatomic aspects of plateau iris were studied using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) determining it as a form of primary angle-closure glaucoma caused by a large or anteriorly positioned ciliary body that leads to mechanical obstruction of the trabecular meshwork, this condition is most often found in young patients. We aim to review the current literature and knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment options of PIS; the search was conducted in PubMed, LILACS, and BIREME internet search sites using keywords and snowball search strategy of articles published until 2022, focusing on PIS history, epidemiology, clinical diagnosis, UBM feature, and treatment...
