Peritoneal dialysis is an important form of kidney replacement therapy. Most patients presenting with an unplanned, urgent need for dialysis are prescribed haemodialysis, leading to peritoneal dialysis underutilisation. Urgent-start peritoneal dialysis refers to treatment that is commenced within 2 weeks of catheter placement. Urgent-start peritoneal dialysis represents an efficacious, cost-effective alternative to the conventional approach of commencing dialysis. There is a paucity of evidence to guide management, however experience with the technique is increasing...

OBJECTIVE.: To compare the survival of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) versus peritoneal dialysis (PD). MATERIALS AND METHODS.: Survival analysis of a retrospective cohort of patients ≥ 18 years who started HD versus PD at the Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital from 2015 to 2019. We analyzed the following covariates: age, sex, diabetes mellitus as cause of CKD, temporary central venous catheter (CVC) as initial vascular access and glomerular filtration rate...

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing prevalence of end-stage renal disease, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is still offered to a minor subset of patients. One way to increment the utilization rates of this technique is the early start of PD after catheter placement, but there are several concerns related to this approach. METHODS: Retrospective analysis in a single-center; 52 patients, 34.6% of the patients started in the first 14 days after catheter placement (Urgent start Group - Group 1) and percentage started PD in a conventional mode (Non-urgent start Group - Group 2)...

The Vascular Access Study Group of Italian Society of Nephrology has designed a National Register in order to create an archive that collects the data on vascular accesses more detailed than the mere indication of arteriovenous fistula with native vessels, prosthetic fistula and central venous catheter. The obstacles to such a project are represented by the absence of "uniformity" in the name of the arterovenous fistula, the difficulty in increasing the daily work of dialysis centers with another registry and finally by privacy concerns...

INTRODUCTION: Peritonitis is one of the most common and severe complications associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD), constituting the primary cause of catheter loss and exit from the dialysis technique. The incidence and aetiology of peritonitis episodes vary based on geographical region, and change over time. For this reason, it is vital to maintain an updated understanding of the current risk factors and prognostic factors associated with peritonitis. METHOD: We performed an observational, multi-centre, prospective cohort study with a maximum follow-up period of 7 years (2003-2010), which included 1177 patients and a total of 476 first episodes of peritonitis (total: 1091 cases of peritonitis)...

Observational study of patients on hemodialysis (HD) in FMC® Spain clinics over the years 2009 and 2010. The data were collected from the EuClid® database, implemented in the clinics of FMC®, which complies with the following feature: record online, compulsory, conducted in patients incidents and that it covers the entire population on HD in these clinics. Its aim is to understand the characteristics of patients and treatment patterns, comparing them with other studies described in the literature and in order to improve their prognosis and quality of life...

This paper reports the analysis of the second part of the data obtained from the second SIN census and illustrates the management model of the Italian dialysis centers, highlighting its strengths but also its limits. The census was carried out between March and December 2008 with a webbased survey using fillable PDF forms. The survey was validated by comparing the data with those sent to the Italian Dialysis and Transplant Register (Registro Italiano di Dialisi e Trapianti, RIDT) and hence it refers to December 31, 2008, the date of the last RIDT report...

UNLABELLED: Mean-term experience in the use of Telemedicine in Peritoneal Dialisis (PD) patients is limited as well as its cost-benefit. The main objective of this work is to evaluate Telemedicine utility in mean-long term control of stable PD patients, analyzing if the televisit (TV) could substitute 50% of the programed inhospital consults (HC) the time spent in both visit modalities, the quality of patient-personel contact as well as how image and sound have been perceived. Visit resolution was analyzed taking into account the need of HC after a TV; We also have studied if it would be possible to retrain patients in the dialisis technique with telemedicine, and we have checked the patient perceived quality and calculate the real and social costs...

The vascular access is the "Achille's heel" of the modern hemodialysis. In order to obtain a good depuration, the blood flow in dialysis must be of 250-300 mL/min, at least. The procedures for the preparation and their complications are cause of the 25% of the hospital admissions in patients with chronic uremia in substitutive therapy. Gold standard is still represented from the distal arteriovenous fistulas of Cimino and Brescia. The alternatives to the native veins as the syntetic graft and the tunneled central venous catheteters or the Dialock system, revealed useful in the patients that have exausted the superficial veins, but are of second choice...
