Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common clinical condition. The way that OSAS risk factors associate and converge is not a random process. As such, defining OSAS phenotypes fosters personalized patient management and population screening. In this paper, we present a network-based observational, retrospective study on a cohort of 1,371 consecutive OSAS patients and 611 non-OSAS control patients in order to explore the risk factor associations and their correlation with OSAS comorbidities. To this end, we construct the Apnea Patients Network (APN) using patient compatibility relationships according to six objective parameters: age, gender, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), neck circumference (NC) and the Epworth sleepiness score (ESS)...

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may promote hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Our aim is to investigate the effect of OSAS on the fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and C reactive protein (CRP) in nondiabetic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Blood parameters of consecutive 90 non diabetic patients whom polysomnografic evaluations were done in our sleep laboratory was evaluated. Among these 61 patients with normal fasting blood glucose were classified due to their apne-hipopnea index (AHI) as mild (n=16, 26...

OBJECTIVES: In this study we evaluated the results of modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in patients with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (9 females, 11 males; mean age 44.4 years; range 31 to 67 years) who were diagnosed to have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and snoring and who underwent modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty were evaluated prospectively. The patients were evaluated considering pre- and postoperative symptoms, polysomnography, and Epworth sleepiness scale...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), characterized by cyclic intermittent hypoxia (IH) during sleep, is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Adiponectin (APN), an adipocytokine secreted exclusively by adipocytes, possesses antiatherogenic properties. Low levels of APN, particularly the high-molecular-weight (HMW) form, are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Here, we hypothesized that IH would result in the dysregulation of APN expression and secretion. 3T3-L1 adipocytes were exposed to IH at 12 cycles/h for 6 h/d to simulate the IH condition similar to that encountered in OSA...

Weight-loss recommendation, no alcohol and no sedatives are the first therapeutic approaches for patients with the obstructive sleep apne syndrome. However, further steps are often necessary. If there is a postural component in mild cases sleeping on the side can help. Recent developments are a range of operations that increase the size of the pharynx. There is a good relief in snoring but the reduction in apnea rate is less successful. Oral appliances are are indicated for primary snoring or mild obstructive sleep apnea...

France has a category of health workers called auxiliary paediatric nurse (APN) who takes care of children from zero to six years of age. APNs play a very important role in the child's development since they feed him, wash him, play with him and look after him while he sleeps. Most of the time, however, they are not aware of the important psychological role they play and consider themselves only responsible for good hygiene. The author suggests that APNs should be taught during their training to make a number of psychological observations relating to the child's development and emotional life...
