The euglenoids are unicellular eukaryotic flagellates living in a diversity of soils and aquatic environments and ecosystems. This study describes the ultrastructure of an euglenoid isolated from the surface of a boiling mud pool with temperatures ranging from 38 to 98 degrees C and pH 2 - 4. The hot mud pool is located in Area de Pailas de Barro, Las Pailas, Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The morphological characterization of the Euglena pailasensis was performed by SEM and TEM. It was determined that, although the euglenoid was obtained from an extreme volcanic environment, the general morphology corresponds to that of a typical member of Euglena of 30-45 microm long and 8-10 microm wide, with membrane, pellicle, chloroplasts, mitochondria, nucleus, pigments and other cytoplasmic organelles...

Seals are unique among mammals in that newborns have a large pineal gland and extremely high plasma levels of melatonin at birth. Melatonin levels are also high in the seal fetus but decline rapidly during the first few days of life. The aim of this study was to identify the significant sites of action of cadmium on oxidative phosphorylation in potato tuber mitocondria. We simplified the system to three convenient subsystems linked via the production or consumption of a common intermediate, namely protonmotive force. The three subsystems were substrate oxidation, which produces protonmotive force, and the proton leak reactions and the phosphorylation reactions, which consume protonmotive force. By measuring the effect of cadmium on the kinetic response of each subsystem to protonmotive force (top-down elasticity analysis), we found that cadmium stimulated proton leak reactions and strongly inhibited substrate oxidation, but had no measurable effect on the phosphorylation reactions...

A non-enzymatic method is presented for isolating mitochondria from small-sized human cardiac samples, including ventricular needle biopsies of 15-25 mg of wet weight. Electron microscopy demonstrates that these fractions are rich in structurally well preserved mitochondria. Calcium and magnesium levels of fractions are determined by atomic absorption flame spectroscopy. Comparative analyses are made in similar fractions of the mouse ventricle. Calcium concentrations of mitocondria isolated in the presence of ruthenium red do not differ significantly between the human auricle and ventricle, averaging 61 nmol Ca/mg protein and 68 nmol Ca/mg protein, respectively...

We examined the cerebellum of the rats being the experimental hypothyroidism (cretinism) on the 20th day, 35th day and 60th day by the light and electron microscope. The remarkable findings were observed to the experimental group on the 20th day. The maturational states of this group correspond to that of the 16th day of the control group. This paper presents a study of the ultrastructure of the epithelium of the soft plate of the rat. General morphology, ratio and localization of ribosomes, filaments, mitocondria, spaces of stratum basale, stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum, are described. The stratum corneum presents modified desmosomes, no organelles and enlarged intercellular spaces. Cornified cells are constituted of a filament-like material, densely packed in an amorphous matrix.

The effect of amphotericin B and nystatin on mitochondria isolated from the dog kidneys was studied. It was shown that incubation of the isolated kidney mitocondria with amphotericin B or nystatin at a wide range of their concentrations, i.e. from 0.1 to 100 gamma per 0.5 mg of the mitochondrial protein did not affect the activity of succinate dehydrogenase of these cell microstructures. The absence of changes in the succinate dehydrogenase activity of the mitochondria under the effect of the polyenic antibiotics is significant from the viewpoint of elucidating their molecular mechanisms of the nephrotoxic effect...
